Tips for Tonic Restaurant & Bar

December 24, 2012

I've been here twice and had good experiences both times. Both times I went was a Thursday for Karaoke. It was packed! and very hard to get a seat but we managed. It is pretty expensive. The second time I went I wanted to try a new drink and ordered 3 times and all the drinks were not available anymore which sucked. I didn't cause any problem or anything, just asked for a a Sprite instead. The waitress felt really bad, took the Sprite off the bill - which she didn't have to do - and I thought that was just so nice of her, so I like this place even more now. It's a worth of a try!

I'd like to share my experience in this place, which is not good by the way. Actually, it's far from good. I called last Friday to make a reservation for Sunday at 2pm, it was the Final of the Eurocup and we were a group of 20 Spaniards that wanted to watch the game. A girl answered the phone, she was very polite and very nice (pity I didn't ask her what her name was), and she said that yes, we could make a reservation as long as we had at least 2 drinks per person, which was fine with us. So I contacted all my friends and told them to meet at Tonic's at 2pm, the reservation was under my name. I called that place because it's very big and we were a big group of people, and I made a reservation because we didn't want to be walking around the same day of the Final trying to find a place where we all would fit. To our surprise, when we got there on Sunday, the place was fully packed, with a line on the door. The manager was on the stairs, blocking the entrance to anyone without a reservation. Several of my friends already had tried to tell him that we actually HAD a reservation without any success. I tried again because I was the one that called, and he was totally RUDE and NASTY, very impolite, to me, to my friends and to other people that I didn't know but that i could see talking to him. He literally spitted out that there was no reservation under my name because actually they don't take reservations for that many people. When I explained to him that the girl on the phone said yes, he totally ignored me and repeated the same thing: we don't take reservations for such a big group. Fine! I understand that! but... they should have told me that on the phone instead of saying yes... because it was Sunday, the Final was about to start and we didn't have a place to watch the game. If I had known that on Friday I would have called another place or told my friends to split in smaller groups... but there's just no way they can say yes to the reservation and then no once we are there. I guess they saw the place was gonna be packed anyway so they already were gonna make good business, but I'm sorry, that's no way to treat costumers. I'm very disappointed and angry, the manager is awful and shouldn't be working there nor anywhere else where workers have to deal with costumers. We left the place and luckily we found another tavern close enough where we could have a sit and enjoy good food and drinks while watching the game, great atmosphere, and waiters and manager treated us great (this place name is Pigs n' Whistle, I totally recommend it). We are not gonna go back to Tonic's, never ever! and I'm going to post this review everywhere I can; I'm also going to tell this story to everyone I know, and believe me, we are tons of Spaniards living in NYC and we love to go out, drink, eat and celebrate, I'll try as much as I can do to avoid them going to Tonic's. Sure it's a huge place full of screens, but whatever, we've never been treated like that in any other place.

These other reviews must be for a different place!. This place is very entertaining! Maybe if these other "bloggers" know WTF they are talking about. Blue Moon, not made by Sam Adams. Seriously, if you were given a taste test of the Wheat Beers you couldn't tell the difference. As for the others, I don't know what an opine is and I'm not sure you know what spellcheck is either. Bottom line is it's up to the individual to have a good time. So lighten the f**k up and enjoy your life. You're "opine" doesn't mean sh*t in the long run. Go there and have a good time and stop complaining!

Horribe Management - Good staff and food. I have been going to Tonic every week for about 8 months. They used to have Blue Moon and Magic Hat 9 and I asked the owner/manager why they got rid of them. He said it was too expensive and decided to replace Blue Moon with Shock Top but funny thing is they are still charging the same as when it was Blue Moon. Blue Moon was even one of the highest selling beers there. He then asked me if I could tell the difference and I said I could, to which he said I was full of sh*t. Now that summertime is here they have started to carry Sam's Summer Ale, although it has been out a few times.

I keep going because the bartenders are really cool and fun. However, they have let a few go for no apparent reason. They also have ~6 big project TVs for sports.

Great bar as long as you don't have to talk to management, still a little surprised at how rude the owner/manager was.

My New Favorite Lunch Spot. I LOVE eating lunch here. The food is awesome, the portions are great and I love the relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Joe, the manager, is the best. If you haven't gone there yet, you should! You won't be disappointed.

Good on an empty night. I have been to this Times Square Bar twice. The first time was a busy Saturday night in autumn and it was very crowded. There was absolutely no place to breathe. I hated it then. But, last week I met with some old friends at Tonic on the night before Thanksgiving, and it was perfect. We had some good drinks, lotsa laughs, and got a table immediately. The service was good too, though the waitress had never heard of Blue Moon made by Sam Adams!!!

Not recommended at all ( go there if u want to be affronted ). This place sucks..the bar tenders are dupery (this has happened twice now, that they have charged me extra for drinks and then later escape by apologizing ), the black bouncers are awful ( they r hostile, don't know how to talk or behave to customers. they don't deserve to be in NY ), the service is hopeless,pathetic..This place is not recommended at all. one person can be wrong but if 10 people have the same opine then it has to be true. I would rather quit drinking but won't go to this place again in my life..No matter what.
