Editorial Review for Mama's Bar – by Kara Zuaro

The Scene
Paint peels off the walls, granny's dingy old curtains shade the storefront windows, and yard sale paraphernalia--oddball paintings, gaudy light fixtures, grand old mirrors, and strange statues--add to the ambience. The friendly folks clad in thrift shop finds look right at home among the mismatched tables. The jukebox pumps out classics from the Mills Brothers to the Pixies, unless a DJ is manning the turntables for a similarly loose and eclectic set.

The Draw
If Mama's restaurant is open, patrons are welcome to bring its snacks into to the bar. Keeping in step with the restaurant's Southern hospitality, Mama's bar offers inexpensive house-infused vodka--served with an optional splash of soda in sizable old-fashioned glasses. The tart and refreshing grapefruit and just-sweet enough strawberry varieties are perfect summertime--or anytime--cocktails. And the vanilla-coffee bean vodka makes a White Russian that would truly make Mama proud.

The Extras

Grab some mac 'n' cheese or other stick-to-your-ribs home-cooked treats around the corner at Mama's. There's an adjoining door that connects the bar to the restaurant.

Save Money

Mama's Bar doesn't have a happy hour, but it really doesn't need to--drinks are cheap all the time.

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

Mama's BAR: Mama's is one of the last remaining bars in the east village that I can't stop going to. The staff is incredibly down to earth and quirky. Not to mention the place has the best infused liqour I've ever had in my life. I'm not much of a gin drinker, I normally like whiskey but the cucumber gin with a little club soda on the rocks in the sh*t. Try the ginger vodka or the pepper vodka too if you feel like dancing. On that note, they have great taste in music too. Another rarity of the east village bridge & tunnel sensation that just keeps on getting worse and worse. Here's to mamas bar!! RESTAURANT: full, hearty, home cooked, delicious love-food. Again, a great staff, chill atmosphere and serious deal for really yummy in tummy grub. ALL IN ALL mama's rules and no I don't work there. but i'm friends with a lot of the kids that do, so go there and give them your money.

Pros: great music, cool people, the heart of the e.vil, delicious food / drinks.

Cons: occassionally crowded with bridge & tunnel but what isn't on the weekend
