In Short – Bouncers guard the entrance to this two-level club. Hip-hop and rock pump out of the Phazon sound system in the modern-feeling main room, with banquette-like seating and some room to dance. A separate DJ spins house upstairs, where there's more bottle-service seating and a dramatic tiled bar. A fish tank amuses those in the VIP section, who lounge on ornate velvet-covered chairs. The Gypsy cosmo is the house specialty.

Need new management, great music and bartenders!!

by YagirlMoe at Citysearch

My first 30 minutes in Gypsy Tea were horrible. I went to Gypsy Tea on a saturday night. Me and 4 of my girls had a flyer that said free until 1am and $1 shots until 1am. Truthfully thats why we went, we had never been there, decided to check it out and who doesn't want a few $1 shots? They gave us a hard time at the door about the guestlist and the flyer and getting in free, but after about 10 minutes we did all get in for free. (There was noooooo line, that was a plus!!!!!). Then we got in and the bartender (who was very very nice) said she knew nothing of this $1 shot deal and she would ask her manager. So we showed the manager the flyer and she said she was going to go double check and be right back. She never came back. She was very rude!!!!!!!!! I didn't see her for the rest of the night. (THE FLYER SAYS $1 SHOTS UNTIL 1AM ON MARCH 8TH AS WELL, SO JUST BE PREPARED!!) They are very unorganized and the people who make the guestlist, those who make the flyers, the bartenders, the "managers," and security must not communicate with each other at all. But after all of that the music was great, on the first floor there was a mix of hip hop, rap and r&b, and in the basement they played 80's, dance, and pop. The first floor was extreeeemly crowded, there is not much space to dance. The basement had more space and air, I'm assuming because of the difference in music. The layout is more like a lounge, especially on the first floor. Oh and a fight did break out, but considering how packed it was, they stopped it very quickly, removed those people and kept the party going.

A couple of notes:

The cover is usually $20

Shot of Patron: $14

Shot of Bacardi: $10

Beer: $8

Coat Check: $4 per item

  • Pros: Music
  • Cons: The flyer, The Manager, Uncomfortably crowded, Expensive drinks

Greedy bartenders

by NYCLee10460 at Citysearch

A friend and I went to Gypsy Tea for a supposed Reggae-Soca night taking place on both floors of the club. We got there around 11:45P to my surprise we actually got in before 12A, and no one even asked us to pay or about a list, although we were on one. I know it was early for a reggae club, but when we got there, the bottom floor was occupied by another type of crowd, playing pop and dance music. Both parties shared the downstairs coat check, which was out of control and very unorganized, with a rude staff. The DJ was ok, only because I cannot listen to reggae all night and went at my friends request. I personally enjoyed the fact that he mixed in some rap and pop, but I can imagine the people who showed up for the Reggae-Soca party were quite disappointed. The club is very small, but my issue was with the bartender. I ordered a Margarita and an Apple Martini and paid $28 for a heavily-iced drinks in a plastic cups. I clearly calculated my tip amount on my reciept and that amount was NOT what was charged to my credit card. I cant stand greedy bartenders, and I know they already charge women more than men for the same drink. I hate to be ripped off and have considered contesting the charge just for the principle. Overall, I guess I had a good time, but it didnt live up to its hype, so I would not go back and am not surprised at its negative reviews.

  • Pros: Actually got in for free, packed, DJ mixed music
  • Cons: DJ mixed music on special Soca night, overpriced drinks, bartender overcharges card regardless of what is on your slip, small place

by 4afterhours at Citysearch

This place is not for Friday or Saturday nights......one of the best afterhour spots in the city. Best be there around 6 am 2 have a good time will usually run till noon.....Plenty of couches to lay around, decent dancefloor and very dark.....good place to close out a saturday night....This is not a fiffy spot and do not expcet to be treated like royalty.....go there to have fun with your crew....If you think 20 bux is too much to enter a club you probably shouldnt be going out.........
