Charming Village Haunt – Living locally Alexandra has become a staple in my restaurant rotation. The food is eclectic and excellent - ranging from a great paella to a tasty burger. The staff have always been helpful in my experience, and the candlelit ambience is just as cozy as could be. Some reviews have been negative - but seem to be attributed to a single bad experience. As someone who frequents the place very often; I can wholeheartedly disagree. Alexandra is excellent.
Perfect atmosphere for the great food that is served – I cam here with my girlfriend and another couple and we had the best time ever! The food was great and everyone in the place was smiling and helpful. I would love to go back often. My party agreed.
Always fresh and flavorful – I do not live in NY but visit often and always include a visit to Alexandra. I love the food! It is always flavorful and fresh. I have had everything from a great burger to a delicious fresh mahi prepared with top gourmet style. The atmosphere reminds me a a small French Bistro, with friendly but not intrusive service. I for one appreciate that they do not allow strollers or dogs. It would be unsafe for children and dogs to be in this small space with hot food and beverages being served
Nastiest Staff Ever – This is by far the worst serive I have ever encountered in the usually charming West Village. Not only was I told that they would not pour coffee over ice for me (why not?), I was reprimanded for going across the street and buying an iced coffee. I was told that, "Alexandra does not allow outside beverages." Perhaps they should, as they were out of diet coke, completely ignored our second drink order and would not do something as simple as bring me a glass of ice and cup of coffee. Not to mention that the entrees came out in two groups, about ten minutes apart (and were average, at best). The waiter must have known he was not getting a tip, because he ADDED 20% to our bill for a party of four. Needless to say, with all the charming places in the West Village, it would be a shame to waste your time here.
Not for families and pet owners – 9/9: We live in the neighborhood, actually across the street, and used to frequent for average to pretty good food and nice wine list...but as per the owners just this past week they no longer allow strollers or dogs at the outer area for eating for brunch, lunch or dinner. The West Village is all about families and pets! My suggestion: Alexandra can move to another hood! I'll never go back!
Worst restaurant in the West Village - service AWFUL, food not great – Brunch here was a total disappointment. My boyfriend and I eat at many of the wonderful establishments in the West Village and know a lot about food and wine. We live around the corner and have passed Alexandra several times and decided to give it a shot for brunch. The sidewalk tables were full and the inside was totally empty, so we sat inside. The bartender was glaring and wore flip-flops, which are not appropriate. We ordered a medium rare burger that came out well done and had to be sent back, with no apology from our disinterested waitress. The eggs benedict was overcooked and had a grainy sauce. They actually charge $3 PER GLASS of iced tea, so two rounds for a 5-6 oz serving of iced tea came to $12, which we were fully charged for despite the problems with our meals. Worst service in the West Village, and the food is pretty bad. This place should be shut down. It's by far the most awful eating experience in the neighborhood. We will never go back.
Nice Neighborhood Place – I dont get the other bad review but I have eaten here several times and consistently had a good meal and service.
worst food & service – This place should be out of business. My husband & I dine out alot, & as much as we enjoy good food, we aren't ones to complain. However, I was apalled at the rude service and the food. I ordered a mahi sandwich,
the fish arrived rubbery & not even cooked. When I told the waitor he could care less- replying- oh, well sorry- not even, can I get you another or something else. I also ordered a glass of pinot grigio, but when the bill came I was charged $14 for a pinot gris- a little outrageous. When I explained to the waitor that I ordered a pinot grigio, not a pinot gris- he again rudely replied,"we dont serve pinot grigio's", well at that point I was livid, because out of common courtesy he should have told me and the whole experience was unpleasant. Trust me, do not waste your money on this place. We're fortunate to have many great restaurants in our wonderful city, go explore others.
A nice surprise – I went to Alexandra with a friend who lives in the neighborhood. My experience was much better than most of the reviews: food was very good (giant, delicious pork chop); attentive, if casual service; prompt delivery of food and wine; very nice wine selection (if a little pricey, but more under $40 are available than prior reviews would indicate); great dessert. All in all, I can't think of a better place to spend a cold February Wednesday night. They should have a big sign saying cash only though, because I had no idea until the bill came.
Good food, bad service and management – We ordered a round at the bar, a McCellan 18 on the rocks for him, and a captian and coke for me $35.00 total. We were promptly seated at the worst table in the place. The restaurant was offering a $70.00 Price Fixed Menu which included a four course menu and champagne. We, only were given 3 full courses. Coffee not included. During the night, we ordered 3 bottles of wine, (none offered under $40.00) 1 Gin and tonic, and one cappucino. Our bill came to $480.00, which included tax and a 20% Gratuity. Our waiter was pushing us all night to take our plates, and swiped my dessert before I was finised with it. The staff wanted to get the tables cleared out so they can have an after party. they should have offered two seating times for dinner. 5:00pm and 8:00pm. and offered only bar service after 10:00pm.
