The Scene
Part market, part deli, part restaurant--Midtowners get to choose the make of their Mediterranean meal. With delicacies beckoning from front and center--a stacked cheese display, a meat and custom sandwich counter, shelves of European goods, and brimming coffee bean bins--the hungry may get sidetracked before reaching the rustic, casual cafe and wine bar in back. Its brick walls, iron accents and wooden tables make for a quaint lunchtime setting.
The Food
One of the cheaper yet atmospheric sit-down spots around, this is a neighborhood find. Group and solo diners sample Mediterranean tapas like tzatziki, dip fondue, or munch on homemade grilled panini such as the Balkan made with namesake cheese Kashkaval, paprika and anise. Others design their own hearty sandwiches from a choice of more than 150 international meats and cheeses, also available by the pound. Grocery shoppers can stock up on European crackers, teas and other treats.

Don't get their chicken kebabs, some pieces were undercooked and some were overcooked to the point of being dry. The management's reaction to the undercooked chicken was that "the piece is too thick" rather than we are sorry and let us take it off of your check. I would not recommend to go to this place because of a possibility of getting sick and poor service.

This was my second time here. Such a wonderful experience the first time. But tonight was quite the opposite. Started off with Sauvignon Blanc by the glass that tasted of a Chardonnay. Had to wave the server down to ask if it was SB. She stated it was a Chilean SB. Never offered to show us the bottle or explain/question further. We ordered the meatballs (very flavorful) and the mustard chicken. There was no flavor in the mustard chicken other than tasting like plain grilled chicken. Server never came by to ask how our meal was, so I had to flag her down to ask if there was supposed to be any sauce because we couldn't taste the mustard. We were told the dijon mustard was brushed on prior to grilling and she then walked away. Never saw the server again until we asked for the check. I know the server has no control over the quality of the food, but it was the way it was handled that ruined our experience at Kashkaval.

I'd read a lot of the other reviews on this site about Kashkaval, and I was going there fully expecting for a long wait, extremely rude staff, and not the greatest experience. Upon actually going, however, my boyfriend and I discovered that the staff was nice, accommodating, and did not make our experience a bad one. While the servers weren't overly talkative or friendly, they attended to our every need. We walked in and there was a wait for a table - so we sat at the wine bar and got a glass of wine. As soon as we saw people leaving from the back, we got one of the server's attention, and he happily seated us. Shortly thereafter, we received our tapas and cheddar ale fondue - both EXCELLENT. Our wine was amazing as well, and not too highly priced for the imported variety. I highly recommend the tzatziki with the tapas. All in all, it was an AMAZING meal, at not too high a price. I would recommend skipping the dessert fondue, though. It was pricey for what it was and wasn't nearly as impressive as everything else - it seemed like the kind of thing you could make at home with a bag of chocolate chips and some chopped up apple.
