What Our Expert Scouts Say

Kashkaval Cheese Market

I love this warm, friendly, perpetually-crowded after-work/neighborhood spot, where I go to grab delicious wine with friends. Their cheeses span the gamut, from sheep to goat, cheddar to gouda to blue, French to Spanish. A lovely brunch as well on weekends, featuring Turkish, Spanish, Greek, Dutch or even Balkan prix fixes!

Great food, bitchy waitress. I love the food. Everything tastes yummy. It's too bad the Asian waitress has to be rude. I've been there four times and each time she's been nasty to us! I've heard the same from others. Food is great but needs new server.

Good cheese, lousy service. When it's good. it's very very good but when it's bad it's horrid. Do not go to this restaurant if bad service can ruin your evening because 50% of the time the service will be very very bad. The fondues and food are yummy when they arrive but will arrive at random times.

Literally out of the past 4 times I have been here I have had meal-destroyingly bad service on two occasions and a lovely evening on two.

For example, last night -- We waited a very long time for a table but would have had one much earlier if the waitstaff had taken the check from either of the two tables that very clearly wanted to pay and leave. I ordered fondue and my friend ordered a chicken dish. My friend specifically asked if the chicken dish was going to take a very long time because we assumed cooking chicken would take less time than heating up some cheese. The chicken dish did not take a long time at all, in fact it arrived 15 minutes before my fondue. My friend started eating so her food would not get cold and was done with her dinner before mine arrived. Eating fondue when your dining partner is already finished is awkward at best. Not that my friend was rushing me but I did not feel leisurely as I wolfed down my cauldront of melted cheese. The waitress did not seem to have a good grip on what had gone wrong. This is a very small restaurant -- the whole restaurant is about the size of a typical station in any of the restaurants I worked in back in college, yet with with two waitresses, a busser and a manager helping out, the service still really frustrates. It's quite a mystery.

Awesome wine selection, great service and exquisite fondue!. My wife and I went to Kashkaval looking to grab a glass of wine... Little did we know that this small, hardly noticeable hole-in-the-wall looking place would be such a gem.

The food selection was spectacular and all the ingredients were of the finest quality. With a wine selection that surpasses most fine restaurants and a level of service that makes you feel like the world revolves around you - dining at this place is an experience you need to have if you are ever in the Big Apple.

For a little touch of the Mediterranean, Kashkaval is the place to go.... Kashkaval is a great Mediterranean restaurant with a lovely tapas menu. The salads are delicious with a large variety of vegetarian choices. The staff is warm and friendly and I love meeting my friends there for lunch.

I highly recommend Kashkaval for affordable Mediterranean fare in a charming venue.

Best variety of tasty Meditaranean morsels around!. Kashkaval offers a great variety of delicious and nutritious menu items in a convivial atmosphere that Mark and his staff so graciously provide. Thank you Kashkaval for many memorable lunches with my friends.

Best cheese fondue ever. You must try the Kashkaval and Cheddar and Ale fondues, they are great. I will admit the portions are small, but it is really good cheese! I don't recommend the dessert fondue, it is not very good.

Amazing food and exceptional handling of a party of 20+ guests. My husband and I chose Kashkaval for our small post-wedding celebration. What a great find and what a perfect choice for an intimate event! The owner was incredibly accommodating and sensitive to our vision of how we wanted the evening to go. When we arrived, the place was completely packed. Within ten minutes, they prepared tables and began accommodating guests according to planned. The food was excellent, and the variety just right. The ambiance was cozy and inviting. The service was on point. The waitress in charge handled our party of 20+ with patience and professionalism. All our guests went home

happy, impressed by the tastes, good energy, and fine wines of Kashkaval! We will definitely go back.

What a treat. We had such a great time here last night - the food and service are excellent. The place was completely packed - the hostess said there was a hour wait but it was lovely to stand there waiting smelling the wonderful cheeses and meats ......we stood amongst the jars and cans of unique European condiments drooling over the spreads and breads- the owner came over with a bottle of wine and made sure our glasses were never empty while we waited. He is a kind character who may be too old to be up that late but he makes the place charming and warm.....As soon as we sat down we ordered a bunch of cheeses and spreads we were in heaven. Everyone was very pleasant and sparking up conversation left and right. I will go back as soon as possible and bring more friends.

Service so bad the dining experience can not be enjoyed no matter how good the food.. My first time at Kashkaval, I loved it. I loved the variety of the yummy mediterranean tapas. The huge salads, great cheese and reasonably priced wines. However, I have gone about seven times since, and I have finally had it with the horrendous service. The waitress are always flaky and somewhat rude, but the last time I went the were actually insulting. The girl actually told me and my friends several times that we were huge eater and that if we ordered anything else we wouldn't be able to fit it on the table. For the record, the three of us are very fit marathon runners. Then she told us we were wasting when we didn't take our leftovers to go. The service was not only incredible slow, they were out of 2/3 their menu, including chicken on a friday night. Despite many items being missing, she refused to let us make any changes whatsoever. In the past, they often were out of things and service was slow, my order was often wrong the first time, but the food was cheap and yummy and they atmosphere was cozy. It has become so bad, I just can't bear to go back. It's very sad, I hope they will get better help; it could be a great place.

Good Food Bad Service. The waitress with the blondish short hair there is awful. She is loud and obnoxious and can be heard cursing and saying inappropriate things at all times all over the restaurant. This place is really cute but for the first hour we were there all we heard was her loud disgusting voice. My boyfriend told me he loves this place because the food is great and so is the wine, but this waitress is there everytime he is and she is the worst. She walked out the door tonight, her shift had ended, and the entire restaurant heard her say something like 'see you later bi$@h' to one of the other girls working there. The owner was not there tonightt but I do plan on going back to complain. This is small, cute place, not a dive bar!!!! On the other hand, the food, wine and our waitor was great. I just wish I didn't have to listen to this stupid waitress all night.
