Chocolat--CLOSED

Editorial Review for Chocolat--CLOSED – by Mar Yvette

The Scene
The restaurant may open at noon, but it is only once night falls that this spacious, understated alcove comes alive. Twinkling lights gleefully wrapped around knotted ficus trees line the outdoor patio, beckoning passersby on Melrose. Inside, chocolate-colored woods anchor the cream-colored walls and ecru table cloths spread beneath flickering candles.

The Food
Eclectic is the operative word for the kitchen, which weaves international influences into modern American cuisine. Ovaline burratta is a safe starter with taut, juicy beefsteak tomatoes and doughy-soft mozzarella, but the mushy ahi tartar underwhelms with wonton crips that border on stale. Despite a plain presentation, the lobster-and-shrimp ravioli is savory and generously stuffed. Like many of the dishes, flaky Chilean sea bass--served over a bed of buttery potato puree and steamed seasonal vegetables--satisfies the appetite, but leaves more to be desired by the palate.

Hits: Service is friendly and the outdoor patio is an unassuming, romantic retreat.

Misses: The restaurant's much-ballyhooed souffle is a meekly flavored creation not unlike a quiche--whipped, eggy and mild.

The place is nicely decorated and it can be a good place to go to on date nights. However, when I went here with 3 of my BFFs, our experience turned out to be really disappointing. After dressing up just to eat here, our food came late, they were either bland or dry, and worst, the only thing that really made us come to this place - - the chocolate souffle, was the worst we've ever had. My GFs sure gave me an earful that night since I was the one that suggested the place.

Pros: Nice Decor

Cons: Bland food and dry souffle
