The Scene
A large wooden bar near the entrance welcomes cocktailers and those looking for a quick bite, while long windows on the facade and white, beach-ball sized globe lights brighten the brown-toned room considerably. Swift, attentive service offers fun flourishes like fresh ground sesame at the table.
The Food
The Asian tapas menu blends flavors of the East without resorting to a seasoning surplus. A mahi mahi sate, simply brushed with teriyaki, has slight lemongrass highlights while the honey, sesame and plum glaze doesn't overwhelm the meaty spare ribs. The chicken salad is meekly tossed in a sesame and pickled ginger dressing. Noodles are nicely balanced, especially udon strands with red coconut chicken curry and chow fun rice ribbons with vegetables, chili, cilantro, peanuts and truffle oil. Only the dessert menu gleefully embraces indulgence, with thrillingly over-the-top sugar-dusted wontons filled with molten chocolate and served with a cooling, fresh mint ice cream.

I live close to Chino's and have eaten there before twice, for convenience and a decent atmosphere for a neighborhood restaurant in the 2 block radius. The food is okay--nothing special. Like others have commented, Asian tapas = great idea but is also an opportunity to charge higher prices. I decided to give it one more try--this was Friday night, after 9pm, and while the back of the restaurant was relatively full, the front half of the restaurant was empty except for one party of 4 and a completely empty bar. There were tons of empty tables - enough to seat 14 people. I asked for a table for two and the host told us that there were "no table for 2" and told us to "sit at the bar and eat," or we could "wait 20 minutes" for a table for 2 to open. I was really disappointed with the attitude and the lack of hospitality/courtesy that was demonstrated by the host. My friend and I decided to walk out and go to Joe's Diner a few doors down, where we were immediately seated in a table of our choice (which turned out to be a table for 6!) and treated with very friendly, quick service at bargain prices. I will never go back to Chino's again.
