Editorial Review for Hummus Place – by Katie Heffernan
The Scene
Locals make themselves at home in the welcoming front room. A few curling ironworks, wall-hung ceramic dishes, and textile pillows compose a comfortable, if basic, appearance, and cute Israeli waitresses infuse extra warmth. The quiet, neighborhood following comes in pairs, sometimes spilling from the 10 main tables into two hidden and more drab back rooms.
The Food
The five-item vegetarian menu features the house's thick, smooth hummus three ways--and each arrives with fluffy whole wheat or white pita rounds, wide enough to split for sandwich-style stuffing. Tahini-style, the most basic version, pools light and drippy sesame sauce in the center. Warmed masabacha adds texture to its tahini-olive oil mix with whole chickpeas, and hummus foul's fava beans give the well-blended spread an extra grainy taste. Change it up with shakshuka, a deliciously seasoned baked stew concealing two eggs beneath chunky vegetable tomato broth.

The food was great. The service was a bit slow though. And I did not like their ice tea at all. But the homemade fresh lemonade was good. I will go again.

If you have not tried this type of authentic hummus as a meal, you have not lived... Hummus made fresh and served warm, with a hard boilded egg, and different sauces on top. On the side get the Israeli Salad, and it comes with pickles olives too. They have whole wheat pita which is really nice. I go there every time i am in NY on a trip. The only other place that has similar hummus is taboon (see my review on that) but that is a much fancier and more expensive place. This is easy, quick, and the closest thing to fast food. The total check is like $15 per person!
