Bad Taste in Our Mouths
by JBNYC9
My guy and I stopped by today after enjoying a play around the corner, at Cherry Lane. We thought the name was so cute that it had to be just as tasty. We were wrong.
We were not greeted, but just stared at, when we walked up to the counter. Then while looking at the menu and taking a minute to decide, it was obvious that the guy behind the counter was growing annoyed with us for taking our time. When we finally ordered, we asked for a few things, including one of their "Peanut Butter Creme Sandwich Cookies" as it was labeled. The guy looked us, clueless, and then sharply said "oh, you mean a "NutterButter". My guy said "um, no we want this one, the "Peanut Butter Creme Sandwich Cookie", and then pointed to it. The employee, even more annoyed said "yeah, a "NutterButter", that's what it's called". Whatever, dude, if that's what it's called it should say it on it's label!
I'm not exactly sure happened next but, our guy passed us off to the other guy working at the counter who had just come back, with pizza, and began helping the girl after us. Then all of the sudden, I was pushed into, hard, from behind by a lady, whom I assume was the owner. She was followed by another guy who also, without a word pushed me to the side, to follow her behind the counter. I was pissed and looked at them for any hint of acknowledgement or appology, and nothing! This place is tiny, I understand the difficulty in navigating around people but seriously, and "excuse me" goes a hall of a longer way then just bulldozing your way through people. Especially when those people are paying your bills.
When I finally shifted my focus back to the couter, I heard my guy ask if the second counter guy if the cupcake had chocolate ganache on top, which he only asked because we both hate cream cheese frosting. The guy nastily replied "Um, NO, it's CHOCOLATE!" Duh, butt munch, that was pretty obvious, not our faults that you obviously don't know what ganache is and you work in a bakery. I broke in and explained about our hate of cream cheese frosting and he assured us that nothing we got had cream cheese in it. The whole experience was completely uncomfortable and infuriating. On top of that, as we were wrapping up, the second guy "helping" us, says to me "Um, I don't know how to say this but, you're um, balcony is open?" I realized that he was refering to my button on my shirt, which was open on purpose and not at all exposing the goods. I had on a button down oxford shirt, for god's sake, and that was very embarrassing and not at all said in a private manner, in front of another guy in line, who began to laugh. I really wanted to get the hell out of there and grabbed my boyfriends arm and pretty much ran.
The whole experience was awful and humiliating. On top of that, the "NUTTERBUTTER" was horrible. The cookie was basically burnt and had no flavor, neither did the filling. The Whoopie Pie, of course had CREAM CHEESE frosting in the middle, it was unmistakably tangy/gross and it went in the trash. The cupcake was ok but not worth going out of your way for one.
This experience put a damper in a beautiful Sunday afternoonand I wanted to share this so other people can avoid a this mistake. In a city filled with tons of quite worthy bakeries with nice, considerate staff, Milk & Cookies is just Stale & Sour.
DO NOT CALL THEM
by nycwise
I too spoke to a fresh manager. I am not sure they even know how their phone system works. Skip the frustration and go to one of the better options in the city!
Do not use their gift service
by arm0815
The person taking my order, turns out to be the manager, sounded aggrieved to have to spend his time on the phone with me. I called two days later, the day that my client should have received the order, and nobody could find it. I was told someone would call me back and nobody did. I called back at night and was finally given a tracking number. For some reason, our order was sent by second day air, despite the fact that our client's location is a one-day ship from the store and that I was sending the client fresh cookies! I called the manager and he does not care. He kept telling me that they automatically ship overnight, although the tracking info states 2nd day air and our client did not receive them the day after they shipped. I will not use them again, although I was hoping to have a new vendor for year-end gifts.
- Pros: I'm sure the cookies and presentation will be fine.
- Cons: The manager and order process were each extremely difficult!
Good cookies, bad service
by mcjays199
The cookies are delicious. It's the service that needs help. A couple of times I have walked in but was ignored for several minutes. One time I was told it was very busy and they'd be with me in a minute but there was no one else in the store.
- Pros: Delicious cookies
- Cons: Bad service
average product and service
by jeneepha
I live a couple blocks from Milk and Cookies, and I must say, they do a very good chocolate chip cookie when they haven't been sitting out all day. Service can be a bit slack.. they once actually ran out of milk, so not only were they unable to serve a simple glass of milk with cookies, they couldn't make any of the milk/coffee drinks they have on offer. Granted, there was only one girl working the counter, but if that was me, I would have closed the store for the 3 minutes it would take me to run to the corner bodega to grab a couple gallons. Another time, I ordered 2 ice cream sandwiches to go, and the girl gave them to me on plates. When I asked if I could get them in bags, she just gave me the bags and I had to pack them at the counter myself while she watched me get melted ice cream all over my fingers. Maybe these cookies are affecting brain cell count. Overall, if you're in the neighborhood, try to stop in. If you're not, don't bother making a pilgrimage.
- Pros: good, home made cookies, bars and ice cream sandwiches
- Cons: unbelievably inept service
