The Scene – A boisterous bar--filled with a convivial after-work crowd enjoying impeccably poured cocktails--gives way to a spacious room filled with wooden tables and banquettes. The diners, many fresh from the board room, mimic the upscale casual bar crowd. Service is overly attentive one minute and absent the next. – – The Food – To miss the cheese "fondue," melted pecorino that's gently sweetened with honey and hazelnuts, would be a shame. Appetizers follow this rich path. The pan-roasted foie gras benefits from a side of licorice root and figs; the grilled…

What to Drink:
The wine list is lengthy and comprehensive, but don't miss the often-changed specialty cocktails, which are always delicious.
ambiance
83.33000183105469% positive
  1. It was everything I expected in terms of the food and we liked the casual atmosphere and service which was trendy but not stuffy.
  2. The ambiance was nice.
  3. Depending on your tastes, this is a fine restaurant with excellent food, but for me, the atmosphere cheap and garish.
  4. The ambience was nice, although the restaurant was virtually empty at lunchtime on a Monday.
  5. While the new space is not as cozy, the layout is spacious and tables are set comfortably apart.
  6. The ambiance of the restaurant is very pleasant, I just wish the food complemented it.
dessert
100.0% positive
  1. The food was uninspired (I had the mixed green salad and the roasted cod), but the dessert was excellent (brown sugar cake).
  2. We recommend the carrot cake made with thumbelina carrots and funnel fritters.
  3. On top of the mixed food (excellent salmon and calamari), but tasteless ricotta salads and over-salty olives, the hostess forgot to bring out a birthday dessert for my boyfriend after I called in advance to ask for it and she confirmed that it was noted i
  4. The dessert was good, though - we had the brown sugar cake.
  5. Sundae with coffee crunch was delectable and the chocolate cake with mint chip ice cream was good too.
  6. Good service, but too salty entree and too sugary dessert.
  7. Average Service, decent dinner entrees, nice dessert
  8. desserts were good too, and they've got a decent affordable wine list.
  9. fantastic banana and chocolate dessert was really good - as is the milk chocolate and coconut semifreddo with dulce de leche.
drinks
100.0% positive
  1. desserts were good too, and they've got a decent affordable wine list.
  2. We were drinking by the glass after we finished our cocktails and there was no pressure to order bottles, it was just very good service.
  3. Sundae with coffee crunch was delectable and the chocolate cake with mint chip ice cream was good too.
  4. the wine list has great wines by the glass( i had an amazing gruner veltliner from austria last time i was in), a lot of good inexpensive bottle selections, as well as a good selection of pricier wines(but not break the bank level).
  5. We arrived to a nice looking space, had a drink at the bar and then sat at our table.
  6. Without exaggeration we were asked 3 times if we wanted another bottle and then told 4 times that we could order additional wine by the glass.
  7. Drink prices were on par for a NY bar, nice bar scene.
  8. Perhaps that was because he was about to get off work soon, but he still managed to help us decide on a great beer and appetizer before leaving, kept our waters refilled until his shift was over, and told us to pass our tip onto the next bartender instead

  1. On top of the mixed food (excellent salmon and calamari), but tasteless ricotta salads and over-salty olives, the hostess forgot to bring out a birthday dessert for my boyfriend after I called in advance to ask for it and she confirmed that it was noted i
  2. The food was good, but the service was so bad as to ruin the entire experience.
  3. Waterglasses and wineglasses were always magically full, and the pacing of the meal was excellent.
  4. The food is decent but it's not worth what you pay.
  5. was so excited to get to try Tom C's tasty delights.
  6. The food was uninspired (I had the mixed green salad and the roasted cod), but the dessert was excellent (brown sugar cake).
  7. I'm surprised this dive has any business with such an enormous selection of delicious restaurants in the city.
  8. The food was mediocre and could've gone to the local diner for some turkey sausage.
  9. The food was good, but with the price and the service, not good enough for me to want to return.
  10. had the baby chicken with veggies for a main course - it was the best chicken i've ever tasted.
  11. The pecorino fondue is definitely awesome and all the appetizers and snacks are very small so you can try a few.
  12. The pecorino fondue to start has it all-a little salt, spice, and sweetness to accompany the delicious cheese.
  13. We ordered the cranberry and pear sorbets which were very tasty but one would think they might place a little biscotti with them but nothing and no candles or recognition of it being a birthday celebration.
  14. Didn't really bother to eat a full meal.
  15. very good meal at craftbar.
  16. We sat down and got out appetisers ( Fried Rissoto (comes 3 1 inch each) which everyone enjoyed, and Cick pea fries (about 8 -nice size order for an app) which I found original.
  17. an affordable, roomy (you're not eavesdropping on the couple next to you), restaurant that serves up great food with great service.
  18. The black sea bass with braised white asparagus was amazing as was the roasted sirloin served with a delicious morsel of braised shortrib.
  19. So many of the other appetizers/daily specials seemed interesting, with great fresh ingredients.
  20. Depending on your tastes, this is a fine restaurant with excellent food, but for me, the atmosphere cheap and garish.
  21. With the dining room only a third full, it seemed unreasonable to wait 40 minutes for our 2 simple brunch dishes to arrive, especially when I discovered that the chickpea pancakes & smoked salmon dish was smaller than appetizer-size; they're quite bold to
  22. my friends dishes were mediocre the rabbit tasted like chicken, the steak was almost cold, and the pasta overly salty.
  23. I've been there before for lunch and the food is excellent, with variety, and the waiter was helpful and friendly.
  24. the food was perfect.
  25. We enjoyed the sweetbreads and the pecorino fondue - and an amazing chicken liver and foie gras pate with pistachio vinagerette and apple butter - amazing.
  26. am one that doesn't mind paying a lot of money for great food and service.
  27. Based on what I've heard about Craft, I expected to taste interesting flavors and unique food combinations.
  28. Bad food, bad service.
  29. we started off with the fried sausage-stuffed sage leaves ($8) & the warm pecorino fondue (w/honey & hazelnuts, $9).
  30. The only entree that was good out of the three people I was with was the meaty pasta, but even that was ordinary.
  31. It started that way the wonderfully long breadsticks with a hint of rosemary were scrumptious
  32. Then we moved on to our entrees - my favorite is the striped bass with taro puree and black trumpet mushrooms - it all was so delicious, really a great meal.
  33. We lost our appetite, which wasn't such a bad thing, because the skate was tough and tastless, much like a Gordon's Fisherman frozen fish filet, and although the salmon looked pretty, it was tasteless as well.
  34. The rib-eye steak (asked for medium rare), was dry and the most over-salted food I have ever been served (I couldn't finish it).
  35. The short ribs were salty, but the bass was nice and tasty.
  36. The ambiance of the restaurant is very pleasant, I just wish the food complemented it.
  37. The food has been consistently good( pecorino fondue is amazing, all the bruschettas, short ribs like craft's are impeccable, orrechiette pasta is great, salmon with shitake mushrooms, and of course the meatballs), and the service is very friendly and kno
  38. We enjoyed our Peccorino fondue, although, there could have been a LOT more of it.
  39. assumed it would be a no brainer - food and service has been very good in my past experiences.
  40. All food was great.
  41. bad points: very average quality of food - hangar steak tasted like it sat on a backburner for half an hour / all root vegetables were way overcooked - watery and tasteless / portions are extremely undersized for a simple fare / services is lousy ?
  42. The food was not bad but not great.
  43. Would have been nice to have more than three little slices of meat on a "steak" entree, otherwise no complaints.
  44. warm to suite simple food.
  45. The bill was not ridiculously expensive, but more than what I felt the meal was worth.
  46. It was everything I expected in terms of the food and we liked the casual atmosphere and service which was trendy but not stuffy.
  47. the salad was so refreshing and beautiful and most importantly tasted great.
  48. The potatoes were tasty, but there was barely any of that on my plate either.
  49. Great service, so-so food
  50. The hearts of palm salad and frog leg pot au feu to start were incredible.

  10. Bad food, bad service.
  11. Service was indeed attentive, but was never around when you needed something.

  15. assumed it would be a no brainer - food and service has been very good in my past experiences.
  16. I've eaten at craftbar twice since they've relocated - the space is a little different than the former cosy spot - but it seems they are really growing in to their new environment - the staff was attentive and informative.
  17. The menu was very limited and I was shocked that the waiter could not recommend anything on the boring menu.
  18. First the service: as the editorial review says, the service is overly attentive at times and completely absent at others.
  19. It was everything I expected in terms of the food and we liked the casual atmosphere and service which was trendy but not stuffy.
  20. Perhaps that was because he was about to get off work soon, but he still managed to help us decide on a great beer and appetizer before leaving, kept our waters refilled until his shift was over, and told us to pass our tip onto the next bartender instead
  21. Bartender was friendly and did a nice job whipping up a cocktail that I know he doesn't make very often.
  22. Otherwise, service was very good in the front.
  23. Unfortunately, the service was horrible.
  24. Week, about 2pm, so I had good service.
  25. Good service, but too salty entree and too sugary dessert.
  26. Service was rude, also obnoxious.

Awful Food and Non-existent Service

by Chubby Restaurant Goer

I ordered food and waited half an hour. Finally, manager comes over and ask me what I ordered so I told him. He comes back and tells me the order hasn't been put in. Great. Good thing I wasn't in a hurry? Food finally arrives and it was some of the worst tasting thing I ever put in my mouth. The vegetables were overcooked and inedible. The appetizer tasted like it was popped into microwave after the food was taken out of the freezer. The entree was worst and way overcooked. I seriously tasted better food than this on the plane or in the hospital.

Once was good, twice...?

by TardyKat

Came here because I was impressed with the variety of the Restaurant Week menu.

We started off with the Pecorino Fonduta and white anchovy bruschetta. Both were tasty.

My friend and I both ordered the Black angus hanger steak. We were not asked how we liked our meat done. It came medium-rare. The flavor of the steak was good but with only two slices, it was a very small serving.

For dessert (which was different from the RW menu posted online), we tried the sheep's milk panna cotta and sour cherry cake. Dessert was ok. I felt the cherry cake was something I could've gotten from Little Debbie's. Serving it warm with whipped creme fraiche was a nice touch though.

A Birthday Celebration

by MaddyL

When my friend decided to take me to one of Tom Colicchio's restaurants we both thought for sure that the cuisine would be of a delight to the palate. It started that way the wonderfully long breadsticks with a hint of rosemary were scrumptious

We of course ordered the well known pecorino fondue which was delectable and the spanish octopus another joy to the palate and from here it went downhill.

We chose for our entree's the scallops that were served with pancetta in a smoked orange sauce

The scallops where cooked only on the one side and one could hardly note the pancetta but for certain you could taste that something had been smoked. Our other entree was the beef short ribs which had absolutely no flavor simple as that

To our delight the manager or whomever he was was walking around and had come over during appetizers but now is when we surely wished to speak with him and he did sway by again when he noted we had stopped eating and so very apologetically we expressed our disappointment with the flavoring of our entree's and as in most restaurants he offered to replace it. We felt bad doing so but the food was just such a let down from the beginning of our meals that we decided to go ahead and take him up on his offer. We went with his suggestion and ordered the field mushroom bruschetta and the Celery root ravioli. It was a bit of a surprise that we received the the bruschetta and mussels and not the ravioli's but we left it alone because by now you know your food might truly get tainted and both the mussels and bruschetta were okay but nothing to return to the restaurant for. NOW comes the real sign of a loss to details and lack of paying attention my friend had told them that it was my birthday and requested it be acknowledged during the dessert.

Well if you peak their dessert menu you will see that though they be fun and quirky there truly is a lack of elegance to them

We ordered the cranberry and pear sorbets which were very tasty but one would think they might place a little biscotti with them but nothing and no candles or recognition of it being a birthday celebration.

So this was our evening at craftbar a true disappointment from one so famous.

Mediocrity shouldn't be mistaken for good

by nybapfood

This place is just alright--if even that. The only entree that was good out of the three people I was with was the meaty pasta, but even that was ordinary. Disappointed with how the chicken was prepared: well-done. Not a lot of charm to this restaurant during the day, in fact, eerily empty when I went. Service was rude, also obnoxious. He ignored requests and it took a long time to receive the essential bread and water we asked for 3 times. Not even close to very casual Craft 'wichcraft.

  • Pros: the flatiron district location
  • Cons: service, food, and overall experience
