What People Are Saying About Shake Shack

Restaurateur Danny Meyer fashioned this al fresco burger joint as a retro urban retreat. He never intended it to become a cult, with two hour lines most days. Resting beneath a leafy canopy of trees, the shiny shack's pick-up window, smiling service and "soda pop" marquee recall 1950s chic. New Yorkers of all sorts fill the spread of green fold-up tables--and spill to nearby benches. Why wait? The Shack has perfected the art of the hamburger to a near unsurpassable point: from the custom Pat La Frieda mix to the cooking program, which involves a paint scraper, to perfectly buttered buns and fresh, ripe tomatoes year-round, this is the burger standard in New York. And the frozen custard? Forget about it!

I don's get it. I was lured in by the Shake Shack hype. After a 45 minute wait, I picked up a "Chicago" style hot dog and a lemonade. The hot dog was mediocre at best, and didn't even have the proper "sport peppers" that are a quinessential ingredient in a Chicago dog. The lemonade was nothing to write home about. Service was poor at best, and resembled a high school cookout. No wonder the lines are so long. Save your time and money and walk on by.

The concept is great ... on both 23rd Street and on the Upper West Side. Affordable tasty grilled burgers and wonderful custard shakes. The open out of doors seating on 23rd street and the efficiency of the production line. That said, I'm concerned about the quality control. Both locations are so crowded, burgers are coming off the line under-cooked. This has happened more than once with members of my group. I fear that the popularity of this place is causing a rush on food production. Not a good thing.

A great place to enjoy a summer evening eating delicious burgers, cheese fries and their yummy shakes! The lines get long but it's definitely worth the wait. A definitely must!

Vegetarians can get greasy, too. The tasty 'shroom burger's portobello patty is muenster-stuffed and deep-fried.
Know Before You Go:
Dogs are welcomed with the "Pooch-ini," a frozen custard, peanut butter and dog biscuit dessert.
When to Go:
Shake Shack is open year-round, with a three week closure over the winter holidays.

Know Before You Go:
The restaurant's popularity means the line can sometimes stretch to the park's southeast entrance.
When to Go:
Lunchtime is busiest, but business slows after work around 7pm. It's open rain or shine, and lines are shortest when it pours.
