A rare treat – I eat at Sezz Medi' on a weekly basis and I can say, unequivocally, that this restaurant is a delight. Neapolitan born chef and owner, Angelo Sessa, brings some significant pedigree to the kitchen (formerly of Le Madri) and tons of infectious charm to the dining room and large private party room. The wood-fired brick oven stars here, turning out charred and slightly chewy authentic thin-crust pizzas, delicious toasty panuzzi sandwiches and even stuffed sweet ricotta and Nutella calzones. Don’t miss the chef's daily specials including flavorful and healthful soups, luscious salads with just the right amount of acidity, creamy al dente risottos and creative seasonal main courses. My personal favorite combo is the endive salad with pears, pecorino, chives and walnuts followed by the parmigiana eggplant tegamino, with basil, tomatoes and hard-boiled eggs....Passersby will appreciate Sezzs warm weather sidewalk food cart, selling for mere dollars individual pizzas, arrancini (risotto balls) and potato croquettes. This restaurant is a fantastic value, so even if you're not a neighborhood resident, visit Sezz Medi'. Once you get a taste of the food, you'll be back.
great brick oven pie – When, in desperate times, a lone soul needs a classic thin crust coal oven pizza, it's a relief to have one of the greats so close by. Their tomato sauce is flavorful, the mozz is fresh and light, and *when in season*, the cherry tomatoes are terrific (off season slices of tomatoes instead might as well be left off). I don't like the strips of hard salami (the pepperoni in today's production will be played by... hard salami in weird undercooked strips), but I'm picky.
Could use a better wine list -- no good dry whites by the glass.
I love their fried pizza! – My friend and I went here for the first time a few months ago and accidentally ordered the fried stuffed pizza thinking it would be a pie like all the other pizzas. But instead it was something like a huge fried calzone-type thing and was AWESOME. Def enough for 2. The tomatoes and cheese and sauce (it's a clearish sauce, not tomato-based) inside created a flavor that was so tasty and not your "typical" pizza flavor. Anyway, we've been back a few times since then and haven't even tried one of their real pizza pies yet! Oh, and we ordered the calamari appetizer once and it was really good considering I've had a lot of mediocore fried calamari. The atmosphere is nice too, a notch up from the surrounding restaurants on that block.
Just Average – Not amazing, not bad, moderately priced. Nice patio and atmosphere, service was average. Just OK.
One of the best Italian Restaurants in the City! – This restaurant is one of the best in the city for Italian Cuisine. Everything is exceptional. Try a salad that provides a full-flavored, well-balanced, palate-pleasing variety of choices. Excellent is all that can be said. The chef?s daily menu offers ever-changing specials that make it difficult to choose between an old time favorite or something new. If you ask me, the FOOD, is the prime reason for going out to eat; the service is less important. That being said, don?t let the last review scare you away, because that review was far from my experience and people keep going back, since the place is always pleasantly full of people who have been their before because the FOOD is so good. It?s a must try if you are in the neighborhood. It?s a must try if you need to travel. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT, you will not be disappointed.
Horrible Service, foods okay. – The waiter after about ten minutes came up to us and asked "you ready to order" never asked us if we wanted anything to drink or anything. We were going to order a couple of beers and cocktails $$$$. I slip a ginger-ale in and after 15 minutes or so, no drink I had to remind him about it. He brought out my girlfriends plate and she waited for my plate to come out for another five minutes. Never did he come up to us during our meal to ask if everything us okay or anything. We waited about ten minutes after we finished our meals, the bus boy asked if she would like to take hers home. Ten minutes later he dropped the check... Wait, no coffee or dessert. I was going to order some, but it seemed like the waiter was trying to get rid of us. Very rude!!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!
Absolutely The Best!!! – My wife and I can't say enough about Sezz Medi. Our first time there and we were treated as if we had been customers for years. Eru, our server was wonderful. His suggestions for wine and food were excellent. The pizza is a great way to start your dinner off. We also had the fried calamari which were paired with a taziki sauce. My with had the baby chicken and I had the seafood risotto. Both dishes were incredible. To end the evening off we had the Sezz Cake or better yet a piece of heaven. We make it a point to tell everyone we can about this little Gem amoung Gems. Thank you for a memorable and wonderful evening. We are definately coming back over and over.
A true Italian pizza in New York! – Any dish tha we had try at Sezz Medi in the pass year or so are almost perfect because
the freshenes of ingredients, preparation and, most inportant, consistency! We had our
relatives from the town of Caserta ( Italy) last month of may 2005 and they were very very surprise about the pizza and they said: Pasquale this pizza is better than the one that you know we had loved for so many years, this is incredible! True Story!
EXCELLENT!!!!!!! – Sezz Medi" is an excellent place to eat and hang with friends. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is delightful. I would reccomend Sezz Medi" to all who are in search of a great meal and a mean Martini!!!!!
Finally Found a little bit of Italy in NYC..... – I was told by a friend that the best pizza in NYC could be found uptown at a little place call Sezz Medi. He was 10000% right. Not only is the pizza great but you definatly should try the other menu items. My favorits being the grilled octopus, tricolor salad and baby chicken. I also like that the chef has about 6 - 10 specials every day. This is worth the trip belive me.
