Fresh breads and pastries are only the crust of the offerings at this multifaceted destination by French culinary talent David Bouley. By day, the bakery prepares takeout sandwiches, salads and entrees, while the downstairs market sells meat, fish and cheeses. At night, Bouley steps in as the chef for the 35-person, second-floor cafe, called Upstairs, which has two window-pane walls and an open kitchen, and whose seasonal menu features sushi, the Bouley Burger and roast chicken.

Went to the bouley bakery today for brunch (the tiny upstairs place that is) and found it filthy, smelly, empty and completely dead. The larger place across the street as well as the new restaurant were not welcoming: the place across the street was a buffet (cheap!) and the new restaurant didn't have a host or anybody to welcome us when I opened the door. At that point I got annoyed and left for La Pain. Oy Vey. I guess this is another recession casualty. Will miss this place!

went there to have dinner one night-- very tight sqeezed place w. rude waiters. They have an open kitchen and when I saw a cover for "CHEAP GROCERY STORE BRAND FROZEN VEGGIE BAG" I was horrified!!!!! Will never return and want to ask my money back!!!!!!!!!!!

Went to the new bakery in the old restaurant space on a Saturday afternoon. I ordered the unassuming cream of corn soup and a sweet onion and potato flat bread. My girlfriend ordered the miso soup and the chicken meatballs. Whilst it is impossible to tell for sure whether the damage done to my digestive system was a fault of Mr. Bouley, I will say that shortly there after my stomach seemed to protest, quite violently, the meal I had just consumed. I spent the rest of the day chewing on Maalox. As I like the chalky-flavor of Maalox even less than I liked the flat bread, it would have been advisable to a cue my girlfriend who hardly touched her soup...she said it was terrible. Adding to insult to my injury, even though its a serve-yourself restaurant, the what little service there is, is reminiscent of Mr. Bouley's restaurants: the lines were slow and the people behind the counter inattentive. As someone who lives in the area, I don't think Bouley's establishments would thrive anywhere else but in Tribeca. Only the same brand-conscious well-to-do hipsters that brought you the $2500 sq/ft "artist loft" would pay for that experience.

Where to Sit:

During breakfast and lunch, customers can eat their takeout items upstairs or at one of the sidewalk tables. Dinner guests can also sit outside.

What to Drink:

Brother mixologists Albert and Stefan Trummer created the cocktails, such as the sugar cane-accented Taste of Trinidad.

The Extras:

The upper level also functions as a cooking school, where Bouley and friends teach classes on sauces, fish techniques and poultry basics, among other subjects.
