The Scene
In keeping with its name--which translates to "leather pants"--traditional Bavarian garb is tacked to the walls and hanging from the ceilings of this cozy German tavern. Even on sleepy weeknights, an after-work crowd of regulars packs the homey bar, but the narrow front room leads to an open and airy dining area where a pleasantly kitschy Alpine mural decorates the walls, and a skylight shines over picnic tables.
The Draw
The menu features Old World favorites--like schnitzel, spaetzle and sauerbraten--but many patrons pair the dirt-cheap beer with equally inexpensive sausage sandwiches, served on crusty rolls with plenty of sauerkraut. German draught specialties like the mildly malty Dortmunder Dark or the oddly refreshing Radler (a mixture of beer and lemon soda) are available by the klein, gross, mass, or pitcher--with even better value as the serving size increases. Hard-to-find imported bottles, like the 17-ounce Schlenkerla Smokebeer, won't break the bank either.

It was with trepidation that I decided on a German Restaurant/Bar. Our worst outing ever was at the awful Zum Schneider on the lower east side. That place was filled with the kind of people you'd expect to see at a Kansas football game. 100% awful jocks who should have been turned away by the immigration guards at the George Washington Bridge. All the reasons you left and came to New York. There, making caw caw sounds. I'm pleased to say, Lederhosen was not like that. Yeah there were a few jocky guys whose guffaws sounded hollow in the back room. But there was enough variety and ambiance, not to care. Our waitress, Selma, was from Namibia, and she spoke perfect German. (Yeah she spoke English, dummy. It's the national language of Namibia!) She was so helpful that she even called a friend to check out an African restaurant address for us. The German food was pretty good. We had curry wurst, and something with politically incorrect veal. Both were nice, but nothing to write home about. The German beer selection was very good. It included rauch beer. That is rarely seen in the U.S. This is a "smoked" beer, that some people think tastes like bacon. The boys liked it. The girls didn't. All-in-all, it's a great place, and, unlike that East Village place, I'll be coming back. -- Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers

Don't let the name (or the restaurant's web site) fool you. This place is one of the best German restaurant/bar I've been to in NYC. The service was very good, and the waitress friendly and instructive! The food was authentic Bavian fare, and absolutely delicious. The beer selection is equally impressive. I ventured off my usual German favorites and tried beers I have not heard of before or since, and they were all excellent. Reservations are a must.
