Editorial Review for Cattyshack – by Kara Zuaro
The Scene
Glowing like a beacon on an industrial stretch of Brooklyn's Fourth Avenue, Cattyshack's first-floor entrance is marked by a purple pool table. A laid-back, mostly female crowd lingers over draft beers and catches the game (or the Discovery Channel) on TVs behind the bar. A few steps beyond their bar stools, an industrial-looking room--complete with a go-go pole--becomes a dark, sweaty dance floor as the night wears on.
The Draw
Owner Brooke Webster, formerly of Meow Mix, stashes the best parts of this bi-level hangout on the second floor. Upstairs, ladies flock to the fenced-in rooftop patio and settle into picnic benches to chat over cigarettes and all-you-can-eat BBQ on Sundays. The second floor bar, featuring warm lighting over honey-colored wood, provides a cozy respite, and the adjacent dance floor feels kinder and gentler than the one below, decorated with framed photos from the Mermaid Parade.

I've been going to Catty's for about three years. Over the last six or so months I have noticed a major shift in the employees and their "lack of courtesy". Better put, their rude, self-important, borderline abusive attitudes. . I used to enjoy chatting with the bartenders and getting to know the regulars etc. However, each and EVERY time I go back now, I am basically HARRASSED by the door people before I get in. For example, I remember complimenting one of their shirts, and I get the equivalent of "move it along, Buddy.." (So much for me being nice and using the golden rule!!) Also, there is a worker by the door to the patio who likes to constantly remind people to shush... Feels as if the customers are being babysat. I still have faith in this place though, and all of this BS makes me a little worried. I have made complaints to one of my friends who bartends there. She said they have heard a lot of complaints lately. Well, Then...Why hasnt anything been done to stop these rude employees?? It's sad to see a great bar (location, size etc) potentially be ruined by lack of respect and absolute rudeness of a few particular employees.

i went to cattyshack with a straight friend a frisky friday and it was great! it felt like we were the only blonde busty femmes there but everyone treated us respectfully and we got a lot of attention. we didn't fit in, but we were allowed to be there too. it could be a great pick up place if you are femme and looking for a butch or bossy person. the upper level was kind of dead - seemed like more couples there. the dancefloor on the bottom was crowded and the music was ok. restrooms were pretty decent.
Pros: friendly, the dancefloor
Cons: stereotypical, didn't see any feminist girls if you know what i mean
