The Scene
The belly dancers may be gone from the popular Layla space, but a frozen margarita machine keeps the sense of fun in the lofty dining room. Light streaming through the long windows and the adobe and jalapeno-green color scheme nearly trick the well-groomed Tribeca moms and tie-loosening financial types into believing that they are in Acapulco.

The Food
The entrees seem to get all of chef Aaron Sanchez's attention, so skip right to them and enjoy the shreds of slow-roasted suckling pig, seasoned with a garlic-citrus rub, or delve into the braised short ribs in ancho chile broth that taste rife with richness. Tortillas on the side may not be fresh, and the shrimp in a mango and jalepeno ceviche lacks firmness. The dessert taco is stuffed with overripe mango and syrupy apricot for a one-note mess. Entree portions, however, are generous enough to still emerge well fed.

I went to this restaurant specifically because of the executive chef, Aaron Sanchez. I have seen him judge other chefs on a Food Network show. Based on how he judges, I was expecting exceptional food. It was so-so. The squash blossom appetizer, which was suppposed to be fried, was soggy and bland. The homemade guacamole was excellent and had a bit of a kick to it. We were not offered an option of having the guacamole mild. The scallops appetizer was great and the mint verde salsa made me want to lick the plate. That being said, my friend ordered a lovely-sounding asparagus salad for an appetizer, but there was no asparagus in the salad. The chicken with mole sauce was good and tasted almost homemade. The pepita crusted salmon was overcooked and a bit on the dry side. Overall, it was a bit of a let-down, but I am willing to give it another shot for lunch.

What a waste of a dinner . The staff at this place works other jobs while waiting your table, its the only explanantion on how they can disappear for so long.

Went on a friday night, had no problem being seated right away. We decided to just get appetizers and we were really pleased. The guac was awesome and so were the mini enchiladas and plantains. The fried green tomatoes were the best. We'll definitely be going back to do the same thing all over again.
