“Overall, the atmosphere was lovely in a generic NY way, the food was of any average mexicana style and the service left us al feeling a bit taken on an evening that would have been just as nice as an one spent in with our favorite local takeout and a bott”
“... then for dessert chocolate molten cake, bread pudding, and some kind of cheese flan all served with delicious ice cream.”
“Have been to La Esquina for drinks and food at the bar a couple of times and thought quite highly of the restaurant itself: novelty, decor and food all great.”
“The food is mediocre, at best, and quite overpriced.”
“The tequila list is quite extensive and really I enjoyed the quesadilla the most just would like to have some more lights.”
“La Esquina is the best new restaurant I have been to this year.”
“When you go, plan to spend - it's not overly priced - but take the extra out of your pocket to assure yourself a good feeling when you leave, and a warm welcome upon your return.”
“From the rude and wildly incompetent staff to the sub-par food, to all the bs you have to put up with just to get a table (a skanky taqueria for a waiting room?)”
“the mini tacos were excellent and drinks a highlight, well worth a visit.”
“Anything you order will be amazing, and the service is really great, no long waiting for the food.”
addicted to tacos!!. I went to La Esquina for the first time this past weekend(for brunch)....its Thursday and i still cant stop thinking about the damn steak taco! its seriously that good...I'll be there again this weekend,,asking for more!
Skip the line, order from the taqueria. I inevitably stop here when I'm nearby. The last two things I had: a chorizo taco and a fish taco. Both were really good. The fish was flaky and i like that its grilled and not fried. The chorizo wasn't over cooked. Skip the sit down, order from the taqueria and you won't have to deal with the service everyone else seems to have gotten
oh ma gawd (tracy morgan voice) i love eating this food.
i love love love their tacos and warm chicken salad and the breakfast burrito... so so good
i never go there just delivery and it's always on time and delicious
there is a great woman who takes lunch delivery orders and she is never stressed out or impatient if you need some time to figure things out. sometimes she makes suggestions of food to try
The treatment of our guests was deplorable.
We will never return to this restaurant. The hostess needs to be terminated. Her behavior towards our two guests who were innocently coming to the bar/lounge area for a drink whilst they waited for us to leave with them for another event was embarrassingly patronizing, dare I say bitchy. Yes, bitchy would be appropriate. But it went further than that. She was accusatory, derogatory, and severely inappropriate in her assumption these individuals were taking advantage of their reservation system. They have to get better front people.
At 6 pm on a Wednesday two of my colleagues and I went there for a quick bite to eat before heading to another function. We did not have reservations but they sat us at a table for three. However, the server watered our table then never returned for 25 minutes, upon their return they informed us they'd be right with us to take our order. We witnessed the server then tend to taking the orders of now what was the third table that came in AFTER us. Seeing that taking the orders of 6 people would mean another many minutes before tending to our table we left our table to sit in their empty lounge. The bartender happily took our food orders and we sat on sofa's to continue our meeting. When two guests dropped by to accompany us to our next function the hostess would not permit them down to the bar for a drink stating we had misled her with our numbers. Misled? We aren't a conspiracy, we are a group of people who innocently had two others drop by. Two others who were willing to pay for drinks, tip well and support your establishment and fill your empty lounge.
Needless to say if this is the attitude of one person, it breeds to others and ultimately the entire experience became a staff of individuals too young in jobs evidently too complicated (as seating people with civility is hard work, of course). They need more than an attitude change, they need to terminate these overly entitled self righteous front girls who behave like children with their hissy fits. There are plenty of polite young people eagerly looking for these $9/hour jobs. Hire them.
Expected so much more....... When we arrived at the restaurant, there was a young boy attending the hostess post, I would say a teenager. He took our information down and then later took us to our table. No conversation once so ever. Waited for our menu's for about 15 minutes until I requested one from the host (Teenage boy). We ordered yuca fries to begin with, but they were stale and old. We didnt even touch another one after we tried the first one. I had to call the waiter over to tell him to take them away and bring us our food because we waited for half an hour until they removed the fries. The waiter did not ask me why we didnt eat them, so I told him why and his response was "Oh I thought you guys were slow eaters" I couldnt believe it. He didnt offer to do anything, which we werent expecting anyways but at least as a courtesy it would have been nice to do so. The suppose pitcher of sangria is more like a large glass for three people only. Very tiny pitcher for the expensive sangria. Overall it didn't meet the expectations we had. I wouldn't return to the restuarant.
RUDE RUDE RUDE. What happened to this #1 taco place in NYC? Not sure if it was overflowing customers on Saturday dinner time, but the waitress just would not seat us straight. She refused to seat my party( 6 people) because one was in the bathroom and the other one was talking on a cell by the door. She let other people who came after us seat at the bigger tables, and finally let us squeez in at the 4-people table. And the waiter said most of the dish was not serving that day includling the steak taco. It took 35min to get us the utencil and the water..it took more than an hour to get us the drinks. It took 1hr 30min to get us the dish. It took 1 sec to get us the check. The waiter took the dish (my friend was still eating from the dish) as soon as I asked for the check. I'm never going back to this place again as long as they keep the same staff.
Gooood tacos.. Great tacos! It gets cramped at times, but it's worth it if you're in the area. But onto the reason I'm writing - To "laesquinasucks" : a lot of times you can't eat outside food in a restaurant not because they're not making money on you, but because of health codes/liability. You're bringing in uncontrolled and unknown ingredients into a controlled production environment. Try understanding the basis of general food industry rules before going crazy, dude.
Stick to the upstairs taco counter.
Stick to the upstairs taco counter. its crowded at times but worth the food. We did not try to go downstairs but noticed many attempts to go downstairs and noticed the really nasty attitude.
Dont bother if the upstairs is any indication the food is satisfying but not worth that BS attitude the bouncers give you.
Hard Rock Cafe does it better.
Recently I had to meet some out of town clients at La Esquina (bedazzled by three year old press, they selected the place). I arrived after they did.
The doorman (!) would not let me go downstairs to check to see if the clients were already seated. I showed him a text from one of the clients that said "we're here at La Esquina" The bouncer sniffed and said he didn't know who sent the text. So, no entry. I tried to phone the clients. But...wait for it...the cell phone wouldn't go through.
While I was waiting for them to realize I might be upstairs, another patron showed up. Same story: meeting clients, couldn't reach them. And the tortured artist doorman wouldn't let him downstairs either.
I pitched a fit. My client came upstairs. Because I had raised a stink I would not be allowed downstairs.
La Esquina: you don't know who I am, or who I was meeting.
But really, aren't the 90s over? Isn't it time to dispense with the doorman silliness and practice a bit of customer service?
Oh, and the crowd? While I waited, I saw a progression of old hags from the upper east side and cheating husbands with their asian escorts. A-list crowd!
I'm glad you were able to employ the unemployable...getting a job as a doorman at La Esquina is something to tell the grandkids!
And the food, for all that fuss? Average.
If La Esquina were serious about food and customer service, then why sell t-shirts? Don't they sell those at the Hard Rock Cafe?
At least the Hard Rock Cafe is fun, and has better food.
Really La Esquina. Get over yourselves.
Threw Out My Family. I went here with my family for some Mexican food. My daughter has special food needs and can't eat what is on the menu. We brought her own food but the rest of us were planning on eating and having drinks. They threw out my family because we brought her food. We could have had her eat their food but we would have a medical emergency. I even said we would order something for her, pay for it, but just not east it...oh no, that wouldn't work. They are complete pricks...don't go there.
