What People Are Saying About La Esquina Taqueria

Featured Review

A sleekly restored diner car doubles as a taqueria and a front for one of the city's most stylish dining destinations. Behind the door marked "Employees Only," down the stairs and through the bowels of the kitchen, lies a gothic vault ornamented with wrought iron gates and dripping candelabras. Clusters of fashion and music types, outfitted in their best dungeon glam, augment the allure. Thankfully the unique space doesn't outshine the food, influenced by consultant Richard Ampudia of nearby Cafe Habana. Every step pleases, from skillfully balanced seviches to authentically styled tacos and…

Editor's Tips

The Extras:
For a quick bite and more limited menu, try the attached Cafe Esquina, open for lunch and dinner. Even more pressed for time? Line up at the taqueria's take-out window.
What to Drink:
Margarita-lovers can choose from 70 fine tequilas; or try the agua frescas, water and juice blends, for a nonalcoholic refresher.
Outdoor Seating:
During warmer months, get there early to nab one of the sidewalk tables.
Know Before You Go:
Having trouble scoring a reservation in the coveted downstairs area? The bar down there is first come, first serve so show up, hopeful.

  1. The food was decent, but the atmosphere and servi.
  2. From the rude and wildly incompetent staff to the sub-par food, to all the bs you have to put up with just to get a table (a skanky taqueria for a waiting room?)
  3. Overall the food is worth it, and if you don't want to be that cool, just go around the corner to their more casual dining room where the service is a little more friendly and the food is just as good.
  4. Yes - I know - folks have a huge beef with trendy spots that are difficult to get reservations at - but, trust me, once you get in - it's beyond worth it.
  5. Good food, terrible service.

Skip the line, order from the taqueria

by FryeGurl at Citysearch

I inevitably stop here when I'm nearby. The last two things I had: a chorizo taco and a fish taco. Both were really good. The fish was flaky and i like that its grilled and not fried. The chorizo wasn't over cooked. Skip the sit down, order from the taqueria and you won't have to deal with the service everyone else seems to have gotten

The treatment of our guests was deplorable

by BigAppleChick at Citysearch

We will never return to this restaurant. The hostess needs to be terminated. Her behavior towards our two guests who were innocently coming to the bar/lounge area for a drink whilst they waited for us to leave with them for another event was embarrassingly patronizing, dare I say bitchy. Yes, bitchy would be appropriate. But it went further than that. She was accusatory, derogatory, and severely inappropriate in her assumption these individuals were taking advantage of their reservation system. They have to get better front people.

At 6 pm on a Wednesday two of my colleagues and I went there for a quick bite to eat before heading to another function. We did not have reservations but they sat us at a table for three. However, the server watered our table then never returned for 25 minutes, upon their return they informed us they'd be right with us to take our order. We witnessed the server then tend to taking the orders of now what was the third table that came in AFTER us. Seeing that taking the orders of 6 people would mean another many minutes before tending to our table we left our table to sit in their empty lounge. The bartender happily took our food orders and we sat on sofa's to continue our meeting. When two guests dropped by to accompany us to our next function the hostess would not permit them down to the bar for a drink stating we had misled her with our numbers. Misled? We aren't a conspiracy, we are a group of people who innocently had two others drop by. Two others who were willing to pay for drinks, tip well and support your establishment and fill your empty lounge.

Needless to say if this is the attitude of one person, it breeds to others and ultimately the entire experience became a staff of individuals too young in jobs evidently too complicated (as seating people with civility is hard work, of course). They need more than an attitude change, they need to terminate these overly entitled self righteous front girls who behave like children with their hissy fits. There are plenty of polite young people eagerly looking for these $9/hour jobs. Hire them.

Expected so much more......

by Cazzure at Citysearch

When we arrived at the restaurant, there was a young boy attending the hostess post, I would say a teenager. He took our information down and then later took us to our table. No conversation once so ever. Waited for our menu's for about 15 minutes until I requested one from the host (Teenage boy). We ordered yuca fries to begin with, but they were stale and old. We didnt even touch another one after we tried the first one. I had to call the waiter over to tell him to take them away and bring us our food because we waited for half an hour until they removed the fries. The waiter did not ask me why we didnt eat them, so I told him why and his response was "Oh I thought you guys were slow eaters" I couldnt believe it. He didnt offer to do anything, which we werent expecting anyways but at least as a courtesy it would have been nice to do so. The suppose pitcher of sangria is more like a large glass for three people only. Very tiny pitcher for the expensive sangria. Overall it didn't meet the expectations we had. I wouldn't return to the restuarant.

  • Cons: Service was horrible, food not the best
