The Scene
A boisterous group of 30- and 40-something singles crowd at the first floor bar. The sprawling dining room on the second level balcony feels busy with rich woods, fabrics and patterns, punctuated by the rush of servers delivering back-to-back courses to expense accounters, dates and curious tourists.

The Food
Sate the appetite with plump edamame while perusing the multi-sectioned menu. Of the cold dishes, the flavors of thinly sliced yellowtail sashimi, jalepeno and cilantro converge for a sublime meld, and while the toro tartar tastes regally of chopped tuna belly, its caviar topping gets lost in the wasabi-laced broth. Signature black cod with miso is a must--if only for bragging rights about your brush with the silky, brightly sweetened fish. The tiny oyster "tacos" with shreds of filo wrapped in lettuce go down with ease. Skip the unremarkable sushi and rolls for a sweet bento-box ending of chocolate cake and green tea ice cream.

if you're coming here for sushi, don't have tunnel vision - they will tell you that it's not their calling card. that being said, both the tuna and salmon sushi were outstanding and the uni (sea urchin) was also surprising if you're into that kind of thing. still, they will encourage you to order a combination of cold and hot dishes beforehand, so we did. the yellowtail sashimi with jalapeno was as good as advertised (be sure and add cilantro to every bite) but the miso cod was a bit sweet for my taste. the soft shell crab appetizer was a nice alternative to the obligatory spider roll. if you saved room for dessert try the PB&J - yes, it's sweet too, but this one's supposed to be!

for the $150 Omakase where the cheff is supposed to give you his best, the ingredients were average, service was slow, no one asked me how the meal was before just plopping down the check. Not worth the hype. decor is nice. I've eaten at quite a few japanese restaurants and for $150, not worth it. But if you go to Noby 57, order a la carte. The miso cod is good, the squid and now peas dish is good and the sushi is decent.

Nobu is definately worth all the hype! Wonderful food and EXCELLENT cocktails! A little pricy but it's definately worth the treat every once in awhile. My favorite was the yellowtail and jalapeno sashimi, lobster tacos, and all the sushi rolls. The hostess is a bit snobby, but that's to be expected.

Where to Sit:

The noise level in the dining room can reach din proportions. Ask for seating in the lounge to the right of the stairs, which is somewhat removed from the fray.

What to Drink:

The subtle flavors of the Emporio martini made with gin, sake, cranberry, lychee and lime juices act as a nice balance to the sweet-hot flavors on the menu.
