Editorial Review for Nobu 57 – by Erin Behan
The Scene
A boisterous group of 30- and 40-something singles crowd at the first floor bar. The sprawling dining room on the second level balcony feels busy with rich woods, fabrics and patterns, punctuated by the rush of servers delivering back-to-back courses to expense accounters, dates and curious tourists.
The Food
Sate the appetite with plump edamame while perusing the multi-sectioned menu. Of the cold dishes, the flavors of thinly sliced yellowtail sashimi, jalepeno and cilantro converge for a sublime meld, and while the toro tartar tastes regally of chopped tuna belly, its caviar topping gets lost in the wasabi-laced broth. Signature black cod with miso is a must--if only for bragging rights about your brush with the silky, brightly sweetened fish. The tiny oyster "tacos" with shreds of filo wrapped in lettuce go down with ease. Skip the unremarkable sushi and rolls for a sweet bento-box ending of chocolate cake and green tea ice cream.

Insider Tips
Where to SitThe noise level in the dining room can reach din proportions. Ask for seating in the lounge to the right of the stairs, which is somewhat removed from the fray.
What to DrinkThe subtle flavors of the Emporio martini made with gin, sake, cranberry, lychee and lime juices act as a nice balance to the sweet-hot flavors on the menu.
Know Before You GoReservations are accepted a month in advance, although you can always try for day-of cancellation spots.

My husband and I made reservations a month in advance and did not have to wait to be seated when we arrived (around 9:30 on a Friday). It was crowded, but the seating still allows for a somewhat quiet experience. Our server was extremely attentive and helpful, making appreciated suggestions. All of our dishes were timed perfectly in terms of when they were served. We ordered the more common NOBU dishes, the jalapeno sashimi tuna, a lobster salad, rock shrimp tempura, miso black cod, and chocolate bento box, and these signature dishes did not disappoint! I had read negative comments on the sushi so I did not order any. All of our dishes were fresh, well presented, and delicious. I had a martini and my husband had two glasses of wine. Yes, it was pricey, but not really different from other meals we had in the city. Many have complained about a "picture policy"-are you kidding me? Who wants to have flashes blinding them in a appropriately dark restaurant. Who needs a picture of dinner. Grow up and realize this isn't your prom.
Pros: Signature dishes still meet expectations; expertly timed service

over priced. under served. tried it time and time again and will not do again. we had a very expensive bill and all were totally unhappy with all around service. they need to up the customer service and be happy that people are spending $1500+ to dine there with a table of 6 or more. many more places in the city to go to than this one. over played! do something else! really we were a table of 8 and it was a special night. but their attitude was "no photos" and "we have other customers more important". interesting, as i would have thought all customers were important. anyway, not my first time out in NYC and i was VERY disappointed as it seemed like a lot of effort to make our night miserable verse making us happy.
Pros: convenient but other less played out Sushi places are around the corner
Cons: bad customer service from management level down. overpaid. bad service. you are just a number.
