One star is like no stars – This sand thing is pretty big, but not big enough to put up with Euro prices and yes, those psychos doing the security.
Atmosphere A+ Management F- – Hello Harry?
New Yorkers speaking treat your customers with respect and we will come back and treat you real well, but not until you do the same.
I visited the water taxi beach on memorial day. It was great weather, nice bartenders, and cool people hangin out at the place. But the baffeling thing is how the place can be run so poorly. I guess the view and the outdoor beachy environment is the draw but I'm not going to be returning often.
Get this one the bar charges like 5 bucks for a bottle of water, but at the food stand only 1.50 heres the real kicker the line for food took me a half hour to get through, my friends thought I got lost or something, and the place isn't that big! Just for a hot dog and a water! And the bar line was really long too. Plus the bottle of water was warm and they won't give you a cup of ice. RIDCULOUS! It was like 80 degrees outside in the hot sun.
And I would have loved to hear anything but techno blared all afternoon by the dj.
From what I've read on here and what I saw and overheard yesterday the management needs to get it together...although its apparently better than before.
I've been in the service industry on and off for 7 years and I know that a business run like this may do ok but why not put the extra effort in and make the place great.
Why is it so cold and rainy? – I wish that it was warm out tonight. I saw the picture of Harrys on the front place of citysearch and i am wishing for blue skys and warm breezes. i love harrys for the summer and i am getting annoyed at mother nature for not letting me come! Great place to play volleyball, hang out with friends, and pass the summer in the city. Beer, burgers, and sand. cant really go wrong with that winning combination!!
Beach bar party along the East River, with a bar, loud music, and some of the best hamburgers around. – This riverfront tiki shack basks in manmade glory. A generous, fenced-in plot of sand (brought in from Jersey) packs a volleyball net and picnic tables, where Manhattanites escape to California--or their closest attempt at it--if only for an afternoon. You'll find $2, 24-oz. Pabst Blue Ribbons, tropical blends and grilled hot dogs and burgers that are the work of Harry Hawk, the creator of Brooklyn's late lamented Schnack. The burgers are no afterthought, either--they're freshly ground and painstakingly cooked, and as a result some of the best in New York. But it's still all about the beach party.
Best Burgers great view – Enjoy going with my kid or my wife, but also there hanging out with friends as well. It isn't the cheapest place but not that expansive either. Mostly a beer drinker here. If you like house music this is a great place music wise.
Our best customers are the ones who bring their children with them.
Fun place, condescending staff, and... – You should know that they now scan your ID at the entrance! Which I thought was not such a bad idea at first... Until one night when my ID didn't scan.
One should know that it doesn't scan = you don't get in! The worst part is that the girl at the entrance was condescending, which I found unusual for the place. As a consequence our group went somewhere else in the neighborhood, somewhere where patronage is appreciated.
Water Taxi Beach is a place I've been hanging out for the past 2 years now and I've never had any problem. But that night, even though I was in possession of a valid NYS ID (and I'm 31!) I was denied access to it. We all found it really frustrating. To the point that we're contemplating if we'll ever go there again.
It's a shame because I like the place and the people. I understand the Beach has to comply to NYS law, but turning down regular customers/neighbors with valid ID is not the way to go.
Thanks for bringing this to our attention. To be clear, IDs need to be scanned; however, if they don't scan, that is not a reason to reject a customer, although it does require additional review.
If the license is current (e.g., still valid) and doesn't show signs of tampering, etc., than our policy is for you to be admitted. That has been our policy since we first used the scanners but with our large security staff clearly not everyone got the message. Ask to speak to the manager if this happens again.
FYI, any US drivers license (or non driver identification card) is good including those issued by the state department, other branches of the federal government or any of the states, territories, etc. U.S. Military IDs and Canadian drivers licenses are also acceptable. However, everyone else need to bring a passport. (Section 65-b.2(b) - ABC Law)
Such potential but horrible management – I went there on a Saturday afternoon in July to celebrate my Birthday with friends. For some reason they were not serving food. The staff was clueless leading us to believe they were going to fire up the grill at some point but never actually did. There was no notice regarding the lack of food on the premises or online, and of course we were not allowed to bring in our own food. As a result my party was a bust because we were starving. After 3.5 hours of drinking on a empty stomach I noticed a different grill was fired up so we got excited at the prospect of food. Once we made our way up a very loooong line we were told this food was for online pre-orders only. Are you kidding me? I really wanted to believe that all the poor reviews were related to evening post PS1 warm up parties. Sadly, I was mistaken. AVOID until the management wakes up or sells to someone who cares.
Avoid on all nights – This is the worst staff I've ever come into contact with in all my life's experiences. The crowd is pretentious.
Obnoxious Security! – I Love everything about this place and have always had a positive experience until last night when I was escorted out for doing something that EVERYONE around me was doing. I left quietly and told her I need to use the bathroom. She said to go across the street and that I needed to be escorted COMPLETELY off the premises. The Female security guard must of had something against me because not only did she make me leave, she was obnoxious about it and as we were leaving we passed several people who were partaking in the same thing I was getting kicked out for. When I tried telling her that, she said she didn't care. I tried telling the other guards what happened and she called for back up. I am no criminal and don't appreciate being treated like one, especially by someone who is biased against other women. As you can tell from the other reviews, this place needs to reconsider who they hire and either strictly enforce the rules or not, no in between! That's fair! I have never been so humiliated in my life. Bet that guard felt great after that! Isn't it nice to have power?
Close But No Cigar – The concept of the place is great....a bar/dance floor on a manmade beach facing the Manhattan skyline...fabulous!
C'mon Harry (if that is your real name), you need to step it up! The potential is there at Water Taxi Beach. The view is gorgeous and it's just nice to sit on that sand and have a drink or maybe dance with the breeze hitting you. But some things need to be changed.
Here are my suggestions for you Harry, now listen up:
1-Stop charging an arm and a leg for drinks! A tiny cup of beer is NOT worth $6! And stop watering down your already over-priced drinks. This why you have the problem of people not buying your booze or, worse yet, bringing in their own!
2-The line for food/drinks is obscene! You have the space to place another concession stand....so set it up! This would also help disperse the crowd.
3-Some lighting would be nice. Besides the tent where people dance there is no other lighting. Yes, the sky is moon lit and the darkness is romantic/mysterious/whatever but I hate stumbling over people who are sitting on the sand!
4-Get a good DJ and keep him employed! Sometimes the music is good, sometimes not. Remember, People dancing = good. People not dancing = bad.
5-Get someone to clean up the sand. I know you probably have staff who clean it up when the place shuts down but what about all those cups and trash that I stumble over when the place is open (did I mention the lighting issue?).
6-STOP OVER-CHARGING FOR DRINKS!
