The Scene
Waves of seafood lovers cluster on the sidewalk, waiting to get in a space the size of a sardine tin. Once inside, necks crane in admiration of the ceiling, from which hundreds of bamboo skewers hang in swirling patterns reminiscent of sea grass. The best seats in the wood-paneled room are the two raised booths, which can fit four to six of the yuppie/indie blend of destination diners.
The Food
Now the Lower East Side has a lobster roll of its own, with a terrific entry by Mary's Fish Camp alum Judy Seto. Lightly mayoed and graced with dill and tiny cucumber chunks, this dish alone should keep the restaurant afloat. Crisp calamari rings with creamy, spicy chpotle aioli and seared scallops with melty, buttery sweet corn pudding are other great catches. The one sinker is soggy, limp sweet potato fries. Desserts--Key lime bar and chocolate espresso brownie--are delicious, but weighty.

Tides is FANTASTIC!!!!!!! I've been here for lunch for work and every time we go, the food is consistently delicious. The service is incredible. We've had a different server every time and they've all been wonderful. The fish is extremely fresh, the sandwiches are great, the key lime is to die for. It's not very cheap but it's totally worth the price.

Great small restaurant with the best fish in the city. The whole fish of the day is always delicious. And their lobster is incredibly fresh. Crispy sweet potato chips also make a great appetizer. Last but not least, it is small enough and has a good design so that you can have a conversation without having to shout.

I heard about Tides from a friend that recommended it so I decided to try it out with a few friends. The ceiling is amazing and the atmosphere is intimate. Our waiter was very knowledgable about the wines and recommended a great cabernet. We started off with mussels, fried clams and oysters, and fried calamari. The mussels were in a delicious lemon garlic sauce, which is great for dipping the baguettes. The fried clams and oysters were cripsy and the calamari came with a tasty sauce. For entrees, I ordered the bouillabaisse, which was an absolutely wonderful spicy soupy mix of seafood. My friend ordered the lobster roll and I had a bite. I have to say, it was really good, I could have eaten the whole thing! My other friend ordered the whole fish, which she said had great flavor and was very fresh. We got a side of sweet potato chips to share. They are addictive! For dessert, we ordered the pineapple cake, which was light and a perfect way to finish off dinner. I would highly recommend a visit to Tides.

Know Before You Go:
Reservations are accepted for parties of four or more, and though crowds are daunting, the wait doesn't seem to be as long as the host warns. A drink at Sunita next door makes the time go by quickly.
When to Go:
Plan dinner around catching a band at Tonic, one of the city's best music venues, across the street.
