Editorial Review for Pegu Club – by Kara Zuaro
The Scene
Through a subtly marked doorway and up a slim flight of stairs, Pegu Club makes a perfect spot for a secret rendezvous. Romantic lighting casts a warm glow over all who enter, and a glamorous hostess seats patrons at low-riding banquettes or the elegant oak bar. Geometric grates on tall windows and spiky potted plants give the space Asian allure, and bartenders work their magic before a backdrop of bookshelves, featuring required reading on mixology, bourbon, and edible flowers.
The Draw
The drinks here are liquid art. Splurge on the tart signature cocktail, delicately balancing dry gin, bitters, orange Curacao, and fresh lime juice--or the Gin-Gin Mule, a mojito-like concoction of gin, house-made ginger beer, mint, and lime, cooled with huge ice cubes that won't water down. Drinks are served with a quartet of dropper bottles--bitters simple syrup, lemon, and lime juice--so patrons can gently adjust the flavors to taste.

Insider Tips
The ExtrasDrinks are the draw here, but patrons can also enjoy upscale bar snacks like smoked trout deviled eggs.
Look GoodThe mixologists here favor gin to vodka--and they've got 16 varieties of gin in stock. If you want to stay in their good graces, don't order a vodka tonic.
Know Before You GoPegu is better suited for smaller, intimate groups--parties of 10 or more will likely not be seated.

Me and my friend aren't all that into the scene of bars, loud music and partying. I just had turned 21 and wanted to experience a real lounging experience. I found Pegu Club through city search and thought it was exactly what we were looking for. When we had arrived we felt out of place (wasn't the clubs fault). We were seated all the way in the front (it looking a "waiting" area with tables). I was told by the website that reservations weren't necessary and it was open to the public. We weren't treated that way. I had asked if we could have a table/booth to sit where all the people were sitting and enjoying their drinks but the hostess gave me an attitude problem and said "Um..actually those are only reserved for people who had made reservations". These were small booths by the way. Couples started to come in and receive better treatment and got to sit wherever they wanted. I'm just going to assume it was because of how we looked so young (but was of age) and how we weren't part of the scene. We ate the special (roasted peppers), they were just okay. My drink was yummy, but very very small and hardly had any alcohol in it. My friends first mojito, was very strong and hardly had any taste to it other than alcohol. We got our bill and left. Never going here again. It also looked better in the photos. Everyone seemed to know each other in this place, and there was a lot of "get togethers" here. Not exactly a place where you could meet someone new. This isn't a place for young adults, more like business people.
Pros: Really great drinks, cute asian dresses warn by staff
Cons: Bad service, small drinks, high prices, not a place to meet people
