Through a subtly marked doorway and up a slim flight of stairs, Pegu Club makes a perfect spot for a secret rendezvous. Romantic lighting casts a warm glow over the spacious room, as a refined crowd lounges at low-riding banquettes or the elegant oak bar. Geometric grates on tall windows and spiky potted plants give the space an Asian allure, and bartenders work their magic before a backdrop of bookshelves with required reading on all things pertaining to mixology. One sip of the tart signature cocktail--made with a delicate balance of dry gin, bitters, orange Curacao and fresh lime juice--and it's easy to see why the place is always busy.
Hits: Virtually any true cocktail connoisseur will agree: The drinks here are liquid art.
Misses: Those who aren't in-the-know about cocktail culture may feel like they're being silently judged, though it's still an elegant, sophisticated spot for an after-dinner drink.

Great atmosphere, very well balanced cocktails, good service. I had a very good overall experience at the Pegu Club. Tried out many cocktails - Red Pepper was most unusual and interesting, the rest were very good too. I'd recommend Hamachi appetizer.

I went to Pegu with one of my friends to catch up, the drinks did arrive slow, but I was in heaven when they arrived. I was very pleased with the service and the quality of the cocktails the presentation was beautiful. Once I explained to the waitress that I couldn't really find something that interested me, or more so that I was in the mood for on the menu- than the three drinks I already had, the cocktail waitress made note of my prior choices and sent me a classic cocktail that was not on the menu that was absolutely amazing... sadly enough I cannot remember the name of it , but I'll have to talk about how it tasted next time I try to order it. Although our drinking slowed down, our waitress did not push us to order or try to move us from the table, or act rude or annoyed at our slowed down ordering. She would check up on us, but never felt pressured to order. And after a while dropped the check, but made sure to let us know that if we needed anything she would continue to assist us, and that there was no rush to pay. It really made it an enjoyable experience for me and my friend, since we do need all the time in world to catch up with both our busy lives... we've decided to make it our meeting place, to catch up more often. I would suggest coming here. The people are friendly and professional. The atmosphere is relaxing and the cocktails are yummy.

The Pegu Club is located at 77 West Houston Street. It was opened by Audrey Saunders, previously the mixologist at Bemelmans in the Carlyle Hotel. She brings her knowledge of cocktails to this new location with a staff that really know how to mix a proper cocktail. They are served with a tray of additional bitters, sweets and sours so that if for some reason you are less than 100% satisfied, you can adjust your beverage to your taste. Small plates of food are available also. Comfortable upscale decor. Definitely upscale prices.Vist their website for a preview www.peguclub.com

Know Before You Go:
Pegu is better suited for smaller, intimate groups--parties of 10 or more will likely not be seated.
The Extras:
Drinks are the draw here, but patrons can also enjoy upscale bar snacks like smoked trout deviled eggs.
Look Good:
The mixologists here favor gin to vodka--and they've got 16 varieties of gin in stock. If you want to stay in their good graces, don't order a vodka tonic.
What to Drink:
Try the Gin-Gin Mule, a mojito-like concoction of gin, house-made ginger beer, mint, and lime, cooled with huge ice cubes that won't water down. For non-gin-drinkers, Pegu's take on the classic Whisky Smash is a savory alternative.
Look Good:
Pegu's expert mixologists prefer gin to vodka--and they've got more than a dozen varieties of the former in stock. If you want to stay in their good graces, don't order a vodka tonic.
Food Served:
Cocktails are the draw here, but patrons can also enjoy upscale small plates like yellow fin tuna, coconut shrimp, and smoked trout deviled eggs.
Fun Fact:
Flip to the back of the leather bound menus to read up on the history behind the bar's name.
