The Scene
A cupcake mosaic at the doorstep sets the tone for this cute-as-a-bonbon bakery, with a cheery staff dressed in candy-stripes bustling within its kitschy, bubblegum-pink walls. Stools lining the counter lend a friendly, small-town soda fountain feel, while the indie iPod soundtrack reminds patrons that they are in the Lower East Side after all.
The Draw
Coconut oil, agave nectar, date sugar, garbanzo flour and homemade rice milk sub for gluten, wheat, dairy, refined flour and sugar at this wholesome bakery; and the resulting restrained sweetness is a welcome change from the over-sugary goods peddled by other cupcake-pushers in town. Peach muffins especially hold a moist, fruity sincerity and it's hard to believe that there isn't a drop of sugar in the chocolate chip cookies, though they could be less brittle. Cupcakes are the most popular item, but the thin, quickly melting icing requires speedy eating. Good thing customers can swiftly down frosting "shots" for $1.

Ummm I don't get it. The place is cute enough as are the employees; very nice. The products just don't taste good. I walk by this establishment every day on the way to work and stopped in today to buy some chocolate cupcakes for my hubby's bday. They were beautiful to look at, but tasted weird. Also the carrot cupcakes literally tasted like cardboard. I'm not a vegan but I know all the vegans out there are'nt settling for this -Sugar Honey Iced Tea- they pass off as 'cake'. You could'nt pay me to eat another bite of this garbage. don't waste your money.... walk over to Sugar Sweet Sunshine and get the real deal; their spice cupcakes are the bomb! What a dissapointment this place is,
Pros: pretty cupcakes
Cons: expensive, yucky tasting, no flavor

As someone who is newly vegan AND gluten free, I have been sulking over the fact that there are no good baked goods out there (that i have found)....UNTIL NOW! My boyfriend and I visited Babycakes this weekend at a friend's suggestion, and we were completely impressed! We tried the chocolate gluten free cupcakes - which were topped with some of the best chocolate frosting I have ever had! We also had the carrot cupcakes with mock cream cheese icing - Also wonderful! I'm not sure HOW they succeed...but they do...and you'll never miss the 'real' thing. This certainly tastes like the real thing, with none of the guilt...or stomach pain/fullness afterward! We also shared a slice of the banana chocolate chip bread.....a real treat :) Surely anyone can enjoy this place...especially those of us who know how hard it is to accomplish perfect treats like these with none of the usual techniques!
Pros: YUMMY!
Cons: small place...
