The Scene – "Iron Chef" fans may be disappointed there's no gong, but the dazzling white interior, cleverly lit wall of water bottles and rippling ceiling quickly distract star-struck diners. Downstairs is a cocktail battleground with highly polished professionals elbowing for space at the glowing bar. – – The Food – A master at sushi and traditional Japanese cuisine, Morimoto dazzles with a globally inspired menu. The Morimoto sashimi, five-layer towers of sashimi, comes with colorful sauces in tiny squeeze tubes that are easily discarded for fresh wasabi. Want less…

Editor's Tips

Where to Sit:
Sushi fans will want a spot at the 24-seat bar; reserve a place at the special eight-person omakase bar for the chef's choice of cuisine and kitchen view.
What to Drink:
There's a long list of specialty cocktails to choose from (the spicy Morimotini and lemony White Lily), but a 10-ounce carafe of Morimoto's honey-kissed Junmai sake is the way to go ($22).
Know Before You Go:
The downstairs bathrooms are worth checking out for their infinity mirrors and heated seats.
The Extras:
Don't miss "Iron Chef" star Mario Batali's restaurant Del Posto, across the street.
ambiance

  1. The interior and the atmosphere was sophisticated, unlike the weird place with a big buddha.
  2. We were seated promptly and although we didn't sit close to where the culinary action was taking place, our seats were higher up and had full view of Morimoto and his crew working away in the kitchen.
  3. Great Sushi, amazing decor
  4. Beautiful decor, great waiter and delicious food and drinks.
  5. As others have remarked, the ambiance and bathroom was nice, but the service was so incredibly disappointing.
  6. The decor is extremely unique and very visually appealing.
  7. The ambiance was very cool and the bathrooms will be your talking point for days.
  8. We loved the decor & the action around us!
  9. don't go if you want a tasty, romantic meal.
  10. Server was fun and talkative.
  11. The decor is beautiful, the bar looks as though it was made out of ice.
  12. The drinks were ok, the ambience horrible, if you are a couple they will most likely stick on the side tables (as the show tables are 4somes).
  13. We really liked the restaurant decor and was very excited to be there but when we looked at the menu, it was not very interesting.
  14. the gorgeous arrangements of food, the creative modern decor, or the bathrooms downstairs.
  15. It was a really fun evening out.
  16. The decor is absolutely beautiful.
  17. We had a great seat in one of the "glassed in" tables (as in the citysearch picture), which made for a nice atmosphere to see everything in the restaurant, but not be bothered by other's converations/the breeze coming in the entrance.
  18. really like the interior (don't understand why some thought they looked cheap), loved the beautiful ceiling, sexy and smooth lines of furnitures and ambience.
  19. The ambiance was very nice but we were seated at a larger communal table that quickly filled up with the lunch hour so it definitely was not as private as some of the other smaller tables.
  20. Morimoto has a nice decor, very modern, interesting and clean.
  21. The interior decor was lovely, but everything else sucked.
  22. The decor is amazing and the menu is fantastic as is the food as well as the great service.
  23. The stools are a little bit more comfortable that sitting on an ungreased broom stick, small tables are of a stupid size and so uncomfortable.
  24. The decor is nice but lacked atmosphere.
  25. The place looks good, but having been to a few of Mr. Starr's restaurants in Philadelphia, I'm not surprised by the decor.
  26. The New York location of the Iron Chef's restaurant is an ultra chic yet comfortable shrine to sushi.

  2. The meal had it all, including a fantastic pistachio/almond cake dessert.
  3. food was delicious dessert was yummy.
  4. am a huge fan of Passion Fruit and this dessert was a must get for me.
  5. The desert was a soft, moist mungbean cake served with green tea ice cream and light on the sweetness scale, most divine.
  6. My only regret is that we were too full (portions are GREAT) to enjoy some of the gorgeous desserts we saw pass by.
  7. We highly recommend the desserts, especially the chocolate "brick!
  8. every single dish was unbelievable: fresh tofu with truffle, blowfish carpaccio, meaty crab, amazing sushi, wagyu shortrib that just melted in my mouth, and beautiful two-course desserts.
  9. We had tuna tartar (very good), seared salmon(very good), Sashimi assortment ( good), HUGE oysters with frois gras (we hated it but we just dont really like oysters in general), spiced lobster (good), king crab ( REALLLLLLLLLLY GOOD), Kobe beef with eggpl
  10. Main courses (roasted lobster w/ garam masala and grilled crispy red snapper) were tasty while dessert was average (pistachio almond cake w/ too-tart strawberry sorbet & rhubarb compote).
  11. The dessert was tasteless and unimpressive.
  12. Dessert was the best too, we were daring and got the tofu cheesecake and creme brulee.
  13. Dessert1 was chocolate tart trainwreck; dessert2 was good earl grey icecream and perfect, fruity cremebrule.
  14. Loved the food - highly recommend the spicy crab (very good value for money); the yellow tail buri bop which they cook right at your table and the tofu cheesecake - yumm!
  15. Red bean cake for dessert didn't sound appetizing, but we devoured every last crumb.
  16. got the coconut macaroon for dessert, pretty good but nothing special; my father's pecan brownie was better.
drinks

  1. Drinks were recommended by our very nice waiter and he recommended something called the white lilly and it is one of the most delicious tasting drinks i have had in a while.
  2. The drink is great, but I couldn't say great to the food.
  3. The service was incredible, the food presentation was artwork & quite delicious but $200 a head (9& that didn't include drinks) COME ON!
  4. The bar/lounge seems like a great place to mingle with the classy kids.
  5. We ordered a bottle of champagne and several drinks so the bill was rather expensive but I think it was worth the unique dining experience.
  6. sat at the regular sushi bar because the Omakase bar was way too expensive.
  7. Don't miss the 'White Lily' possibly one of the best cocktails I have ever had!
  8. for drinks my girlfriend had the white lily which was very good but for me a bit too sweet, i had the morimotini which was nice and stiff.
  9. The decor is beautiful, the bar looks as though it was made out of ice.
  10. and we were duly impressed with the glass countertops at the bar, and the friendly bartender who kept us company while we waited for our table.
  11. Of course, the service was amazing, the food was out of this world, and if you're lucky, you'll see Chef Morimoto behind the sushi bar preparing for an iron chef competition.
  12. The desert was a soft, moist mungbean cake served with green tea ice cream and light on the sweetness scale, most divine.
  13. We were able to reserve a spot at the chef tasting bar with Morimoto who actually called in sick that night, but we were still charged full price.
  14. waited at the bar downstairs and the bar tenders were so nice.
  15. At least at the sushi bar the sushi chefs are somewhat entertaining to watch!
  16. About the food, I ordered a wine ( I had my sake returned after one sip, the waitress was no problem about it), Tuna Pizza, Oyster Foie Gras, Braised Black Cod, my friend ordered 3 more things for herself, the portion was great, the food was flavorful and
  17. She recommended a delicious ice wine for me and a port for my friend and then sent us petit fours, gratis.
  18. The service was fine and the food and drinks were really nice maybe that's why we did not realize we were getting bitten while dining.
  19. lounge/bar. Oh my god the service was pretty much the worst I've ever had.
  20. Beautiful decor, great waiter and delicious food and drinks.
  21. She made wonderful drink and food suggestions.
  22. The drinks were ok, the ambience horrible, if you are a couple they will most likely stick on the side tables (as the show tables are 4somes).
  23. Waitstaff was very subpar lower east side and borough type, hardly trained at all, could have just as well been a diner or sports bar.
  24. The drinks were good (White Lily ~$12, Hydrangea ~$12).

  1. Dessert was the best too, we were daring and got the tofu cheesecake and creme brulee.
  2. We highly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for inventive, delicious food in a beautiful space and superb service.
  3. The food is good, I'll give them that, but expensive.
  4. Beautiful decor, great waiter and delicious food and drinks.
  5. The kobe beef was delicious, but for the usual japanese fare, it was not any better than some of the best sushi I've had elsewhere, for a lot less money and much larger pieces.
  6. We finished with the tofu cheesecake which was incredible as well.
  7. At any rate, besides there not being too many unique rolls (like Spider or Dynamite rolls - authentic sushi places do not have those), the menu was perfectly adequate and the food presentation, stellar.
  8. Tuna pizza is a great app.
  9. Our waiter knew the menu inside & out and was great at recommending dishes.
  10. The decor is amazing and the menu is fantastic as is the food as well as the great service.
  11. She recommended a delicious ice wine for me and a port for my friend and then sent us petit fours, gratis.
  12. She made wonderful drink and food suggestions.
  13. It made me sad that this place was so bad, I really liked watching that show on cable and always thought his dishes looked great.
  14. the service was also great i dont know how people had complaints about this because everyone i dealt with was always offering help or explanations on the food items, superb!
  15. Also with the meal was potatoes, which were, again, the best potatoes I've ever had.
  16. Of course, the service was amazing, the food was out of this world, and if you're lucky, you'll see Chef Morimoto behind the sushi bar preparing for an iron chef competition.
  17. Well Friday Night I did that sort of for myslef and in honor of my friend and from the first of nine beautiful dishes Chef Morimoto did not disappoint.
  18. great food and service
  19. About the food, I ordered a wine ( I had my sake returned after one sip, the waitress was no problem about it), Tuna Pizza, Oyster Foie Gras, Braised Black Cod, my friend ordered 3 more things for herself, the portion was great, the food was flavorful and
  20. Wonderful food, nice staff in a beautiful place!
  21. Sushi didn't taste very fresh and flavor combos were not inspiring.
  22. chicken noodle soup which tasted like what you would get a hale and hearty soups for $18, a triple duck entree, which was good, lots of sushi, which was generous in fish portions and good quality rice but nothing too special and the morimoto sashimi pla
  23. It was as if to say "you don't like the salad, make it yourself.
  24. You can't get sushi any better than here and the food from the kitchen is great.
  25. But this was a poor decision for dining at Morimoto, while it appeared that my fish was fresh and not particularly exciting, the presentation was horrendous.
  26. With diners attempting to be "the in-crowd", the food was mildly mediocre, and the price was exhorbitant.
  27. Sushi/seafood is a little expensive, but extremely fresh.
  28. remember I paid $150 for my food including tips for the whole bill, not cheap but was good value.
  29. it's definitely a place to see and be seen rather than to enjoy exquisite food.
  30. this is not a pretentious place, you know exactly what you are getting and everything was fresh.
  31. The prices are largely ridiculous. The sake menu has ~3 bottles under $100 and most over $250. How many Americans know that much about sake to justify this? Many dishes on the over-reaching menu fall flat taste-, temperature-wise. Some things served tepid
  32. The space is beautiful and inviting and so was the food.
  33. The sushi was very fresh and the tuna appetizer was delicious.
  34. Very fresh sushi / oyster, but there isn't a signature dish that I am impress with.
  35. The hamachi ribbons were also very delicious (not the best piece of fish I've ever had in my life, but hey, can't break too many records in one day) and served with avacado, which were mixed together right at the table.
  36. The food was terrific, and everyone was satisfied, even the one's who aren't so much into more exotic fare.

  42. my date opted for a sashimi combo with 2 additional rolls one including the soft shell crab roll which is just huge!
  43. The service and food were great.
  44. We also enjoyed the Tuna Pizza and the "Foie Gras Chawan Mushi" ie 'Duck breast shabu-shabu, fresh wasabi, sweet soy sauce'.
  45. Don't get the cold chicken appetizer.
  46. When we looked in need of help, Sara, the manager, was happy to give us wonderful meal suggestions.
  47. While the food was enjoyable, the real key to my good time here was the service and the way none of my dining companions or myself had to worry about our dishes.
  48. Two appetizers were good (curry beef and crab leg), the third was poor (sampler).
  49. for the mains we had the surf and turf --filet was very tender and seasoned right albeit a tad on the small side and the hamachi salad was also very good.
  50. The sushi was quite fresh as well.
  51. enjoy the variety of the food and the helpful attitude of the staff.
  52. every single dish was unbelievable: fresh tofu with truffle, blowfish carpaccio, meaty crab, amazing sushi, wagyu shortrib that just melted in my mouth, and beautiful two-course desserts.
  53. It might just be due to a tough comparison in NYC with Nobu, Megu, Gari and all the other great sushi places.
  54. The presentation was a plus but the food was mediocre and generic.
  55. The staff was really friendly, they got the high-chair all ready, and the waiter made a special effort to keep the baby out of trouble by placing all the food away from him!
  56. The food was wonderful and our waitress was upbeat and very helpful.
  57. ugly design, nice staff & food
  58. we ordered the $120 omakase meal that was not significantly better than what you can get at your best neighborhood japanese place.
  59. We then had some sushi which was good, but not the best.
  60. the hostess was not friendly and the servers seemed like they were about 12 years old without any real knowledge of japanese food.
  61. The food itself was tasty--the pork and congee appetizer and the shrimp tempura were delightful.
  62. If you like sushi or not, don't miss this newcomer.
  63. My g/f ordered the Salmon and I order the Kobe beef and Lobster.
  64. After waiting over 45 minutes after our time of reservation, we have tasted the flaky Kobe beef, dry lobster, tasteless rolls.
  65. We opted for the Omakase, which turned out to be a parade of mediocre sushi, followed by what was supposed to be Kobe beef, but tasted like overcooked skirt steak with an overpoweringly salty sauce.
  66. We ordered several 7 appetizers (the tuna pizza is awesome!
  67. The food was good, some items great, but overall, I was wondering why I didn't order the Kobe beef as several went by me and it smelled great.

  83. We were served 9 very unique dishes over the course of 3 hoursthe timing in between each dish was perfect, and the artistic presentation and flavor of each was stunning!
  85. The food was prompt and the portions were perfect (except for the delicious Tuna TarTar app - wish there was more of it).
  86. If you like very small portions of hot food served cold, than this is the restaurant for you.

  101. The cooked food was simply horrible.
  102. Most dishes were good but not great.
  103. don't go if you want a tasty, romantic meal.
  104. The prices are absolutely outrageous, even for good food.

  114. Excellent food -- bad service
  115. would recommend the kobe carpaccio and rock shrimp appetizers.
  116. The range of dishes presented were good: several cold apps.
  117. Presentation of the food is great, but the taste of the food overall (with the exception of the kobe carpaccio) wasn't as great as one would expect.
  118. tasting menu, and it was the best meal I had in 2006.
  119. THe Rock shrimp tempura however was excellent!
  120. The bill was triple what I pay for the same thing at many other sushi resturants with fish as fresh as what I received at Morimoto.
  121. loved the food!
  122. The food was superb, service was very attentive.
  123. soup with both fresh monkfish and monkfish liver pate - it was superb.

  129. Even though the restaurant was only 20% full, the food came out one hour after we ordered.

  136. had the seafood mixed entree, with scrumptious lobster, scallop, clams and mussels.
  137. My fish was heavenly, the sushi was tasty and fresh with good sized portions.
  138. Very poor quality for $75; $9.95 supermarket sushi is better quality!
  139. The piece de resistance was the kobe filet over japanese mountain potatoes -- the sauce was incredible.
  140. The food is amazing, albiet pricey.
  141. The sushi chefs looked at us with confusion and we stared back at them wondering if they had enjoyed their recent flight to and from the Japanese waters.
  142. All the food was very good but not the best I have ever had in this genre.
  143. The service was attentive, the sushi was fresh.
  144. we went with the recomended dishes like toto tartare which came in a very unique presentation and very interseting dipping options like crem fresche to black seaweed paste all good, rock shrimp tempura was also very tasty.
  145. Overall a pretty good experience, attentive waiter, food was not as memorable as the one in Philly.

  148. The service was fine and the food and drinks were really nice maybe that's why we did not realize we were getting bitten while dining.
  149. Loved the food - highly recommend the spicy crab (very good value for money); the yellow tail buri bop which they cook right at your table and the tofu cheesecake - yumm!

  9. The bar/lounge seems like a great place to mingle with the classy kids.
  10. We had a great seat in one of the "glassed in" tables (as in the citysearch picture), which made for a nice atmosphere to see everything in the restaurant, but not be bothered by other's converations/the breeze coming in the entrance.

  15. hear a Buddakan is next, if you've ever been to the one in Philadelphia you will agree with me that the service is too pretentious and I will not be giving that one a try.

  37. Once we were seated, our waiter provided us with good, honest and spot-on recommendations.
  38. The service was mediocre at best.

  40. Bad Food, bad service!
  41. The service was incredible, the food presentation was artwork & quite delicious but $200 a head (9& that didn't include drinks) COME ON!

  51. The staff was extremely friendly and kind!
  52. Some of them said "bad service," or "overpriced," and I got worried.
  53. ugly design, nice staff & food
  54. It is unusual for a top-notch New York restaurant like Morimoto to have genuinely nice staff, whereas the rest of the places this level will have their bartenders and waitstaff snub you, me and my friend were warmly greeted by the hosts, who exuded profes

  1. If you are craving for Japanese food for lunch, save your money and time and go to your favorite neighborhood Japanese restaurant.
  2. The price was reasonable but questionable as to being worth it.
  3. am a huge fan of Passion Fruit and this dessert was a must get for me.
  4. The food is amazing, albiet pricey.
  5. It was a great spot and prices are quite reasonable for the quality of the experience.
  6. Everything was rather expensive, but nothing was a ripoff.
  7. The food is good, I'll give them that, but expensive.
  8. The prices are largely ridiculous. The sake menu has ~3 bottles under $100 and most over $250. How many Americans know that much about sake to justify this? Many dishes on the over-reaching menu fall flat taste-, temperature-wise. Some things served tepid
  9. The price was so expensive, that I was embarrased to present my expense to my boss.
  10. would highly recommend Matsuri or Megu, both provide a quality dinner well worth the money, and you can't go wrong with Nobu as well.
  11. my date opted for a sashimi combo with 2 additional rolls one including the soft shell crab roll which is just huge!
  12. Sushi/seafood is a little expensive, but extremely fresh.
  13. The waitress was very helpful in describing all the menu options and the prices were exactly what one would expect from Chelsea.
  14. We ordered a bottle of champagne and several drinks so the bill was rather expensive but I think it was worth the unique dining experience.
  15. The portions are huge so don't be greedy.
  16. The prices are absolutely outrageous, even for good food.
  17. They do try to push some of the more expensive meals but I wouldn't expect anything less.
  18. With diners attempting to be "the in-crowd", the food was mildly mediocre, and the price was exhorbitant.
  19. I've been to Nobu, Megu, Tao, Matsori, and a few other of the "big" asian spots in NYC and this place if by far the worst (and one of the most expensive).
  20. it was expensive but worth every penny.
  21. We were able to reserve a spot at the chef tasting bar with Morimoto who actually called in sick that night, but we were still charged full price.
  22. If you like very small portions of hot food served cold, than this is the restaurant for you.
  23. chicken noodle soup which tasted like what you would get a hale and hearty soups for $18, a triple duck entree, which was good, lots of sushi, which was generous in fish portions and good quality rice but nothing too special and the morimoto sashimi pla
  24. My only regret is that we were too full (portions are GREAT) to enjoy some of the gorgeous desserts we saw pass by.
  25. Everything was very pricey but I guess its because of the Name.
  26. Some of them said "bad service," or "overpriced," and I got worried.
  27. The design was horrible and cheap looking even though I know it wasn't.
  28. My fish was heavenly, the sushi was tasty and fresh with good sized portions.
  29. usually splurge and eat out three times a year or so on expensive restaurants or so but this time it was for my birthday and my g/f was taking me out.
  30. i'm a new yorker over 12 years, i live around the corner from this joke of a restaurant and i entertain huge parties of clients almost nightly.
  31. Probably overpriced, but I guess it's worth it?
  32. What a great value!
  33. Loved the food - highly recommend the spicy crab (very good value for money); the yellow tail buri bop which they cook right at your table and the tofu cheesecake - yumm!
  34. sat at the regular sushi bar because the Omakase bar was way too expensive.
  35. The kobe beef was delicious, but for the usual japanese fare, it was not any better than some of the best sushi I've had elsewhere, for a lot less money and much larger pieces.
  36. The food was prompt and the portions were perfect (except for the delicious Tuna TarTar app - wish there was more of it).
  37. was a huge Iron Chef fan and really really wanted this place to be great.
  38. really like the interior (don't understand why some thought they looked cheap), loved the beautiful ceiling, sexy and smooth lines of furnitures and ambience.
  39. For these prices, Morimoto should be great all around.
  40. remember I paid $150 for my food including tips for the whole bill, not cheap but was good value.
  41. Definitely a huge space was aptly filled.
  42. liked the tasting menu for $120 (worth it) as no skimping on portion or ingredients.
wait time

  1. After waiting over 45 minutes after our time of reservation, we have tasted the flaky Kobe beef, dry lobster, tasteless rolls.
  2. We waited about 40 minutes for our table (with reservation), after which we were seated in a weird little room that was totally isolated from the rest of the restaurant, and basically left sitting there for another 20 minutes before our server checked in.
  3. We waited a ridiculously long time for our food, and the entire restaurant had an unpleasant fishy smell.

Good but not worth the $$

by sarahD at Citysearch

Good food, great atmosphere, great service, MOST IMPORTANTLY, the restroom is really cool. However, i do not think it's worth the amount of $$ ur paying.

I had the Taste Menu which contained 8 plates. For $120 (exclude tax and tip), it was a total rip off. There were like 2 really good dishes, 3 average, the rest were not great. I also wanna point out that 1 of the 8 "plates" was a drink that came in a shot glass!!! Still i do not think it's worth the price at all. You're just paying for Morimoto's name and the nice environment.

Great ambiance, Uneven food, attentive service, overpriced

by backfixer1 at Citysearch

I went this weekend to Morimoto with my Brazilian relatives who love sushi and are for the most part meat lovers. We had a mixed experience. The downstairs bar is cool as well as the decor. Bathrooms are a must see. We ordered appetizers which were good. Recommended is the sushi pizza and the king crab. Lobster puffs had no hint of lobster. Edamame was delish and very fresh and perfectly cooked. The gyoza dumplings were freshly made and terrific. I found the appetizer portions to be small tastings for the most part for the price. We ordered a sushi platter for the table $170 which was good, and well prepared and fresh. At that price, it was way more expensive than it should have been although of excellent quality. Main dishes were mixed. The halibut with the black bean sauce was over powered by the sauce and the fish was fresh. Most people liked their dishes. The 20 oz rib eye was way overpriced at $70, and although it tasted good with the sauce, it was fatty and my Brazilian cousin said it grossed him out. We shared that dish. The desserts was the one area everyone could agree, this was the best part of the meal. Every one of the desserts was delish. At $12 per, they were very pricy. Overall, if you visit, go for the decor and the experience, and be prepared for a very expensive meal that can be done better elsewhere for less. This is definitely a tourist trap

My FAVE restaurant in NYC!

by XoxoCityLife at Citysearch

Whenever someone asks for a restaurant suggestion, I direct them to Morimoto. The Iron Chef's namesake restaurant does not disappoint- except for the fact that I still haven't caught a glimpse of him while I was there. He does make an appearance sometimes though! Everything here points to a good time...I'd recommend starting with a drink at the downstairs bar- the white pear and lychee martini's were like liquid gold in my mouth! When our whole party arrived, we headed upstairs w/ our drinks to be seated, and the guys in our group ordered about 10 diff appetizers, and a few sushi rolls to share! I've tried a few entrees here, but the arctic char was one of my favorites- I've never tried it before coming here, but I'm now a fan!

It's a pricey restaurant, so I'd say go there if it's a special anniversary or birthday b/c it's well worth it!

Don't forget to check out their innovative bathroom downstairs...

Very memorable and special!

Morimoto glams up sushi like no one else. Loved the original menu, the painstakingly lovely presentation, and the overall dining experience. It's a special place, so save it for someone you know will be great company.

Very Good but not Excellent

by jglogau at Citysearch

I have to say that the Tuna Tartar was out of this world. I would go back for that alone.

But, I didn't find the regular sushi was anything special, fresh and appealing but not stellar.

I found the concrete interior design a little sterile.

  • Pros: Specialties Really Fantastic
