“This is not the best Indian food in NY, and the dining room is kind of small and non-descript, which is why I recommend it more for locals looking to have a comfortable meal, and do not necessarily suggest that people travel here.”
“Highly recommend the Daal Saag and the Kheer for dessert!”
“Also it is a terrific BYOB: pick up a bottle of wine at Mitchell's on 86th or one of the other wine stores and have a relaxing evening.”
“well authentic flare.”
“For years my favorite restaurant was Gate of India in my hometown, L.A. Having moved to NYC about 6 years ago, I hadn't found an Indian restaurant that had the same.”
“The food here is off the charts good, the service is beyond polite and the cost more than palatable.”
“have eaten here twice, and was impressed both times by the welcoming, courteous service and great value.”
“My father was born in India and I have been eating the stuff for a long long time so I know good Indian when I taste it!”
Great customer service.
This new restaurant offers an intimate setting with an owner that really cares about its customers. The food was great - the Mulligatawny soup had a hint of lemon and it was soothing, not over seasoned. The Kadai Shrimp was delicious--the shrimp were not over cooked as is a problem in a lot of indian restuarants, the seasoning just right. The lamb chops were also very good. My only complaint would be that the semosas were a little cold when we got them, but other than that the food was very good.
This is one of the best Indian restaurants in the area!

If you love Indian food, this is the place to eat!. We've been eating here since it opened earlier this year. We used to go to another Indian restaurant on the UWS, but followed our favorite waiter here when he and a friend opened up Alachi Masala. I have not been disappointed. We always start with the Chana Bhajee with Poori. What a great treat. I'd love to find out how they make those chickpeas...yum! The chicken tikka masala, the chicken curry, the lamb chops (oh my ...the lamb chops!) are absolutely delightful. I have never had lamb chops like the ones they serve here. All the right spices make it so flavorful. If you're a coconut lover, the Alachi Masala Special Naan and the coconut soup are great. It's almost like having a dessert. All in all, it's a wonderful place to eat. Lopa, our server, is just wonderful and she's so friendly. I love going here!!! Try it!
Some like it hot, some like it not!. We (4 adults and 3 kids aged (2 to 7)) came here for dinner and left saying wow. The service is great and the food amazing. Our tastes range widely and the chef was responsive. I like it mild and was very happy with the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Chana Pindi. Our friend, straight from the State of Kerala in Southwest India, can never get it hot enough yet she was smiling constantly. The kids loved the Alachi Masala Special Naan and the coconut samosas. Babu, one of the two owners works the front and Hamja the chef works the kitchen. The owners are both there constantly and are very attentive and responsive. We met Babu, when he worked at and later managed Mughlai which we always felt grew largely because of Babu's caring and sincere attitude. Now Babu has his own place and we have a new favorite place to eat.
Great BYOB & Indian!. I have been here twice & will be back many more times. This place is a hidden gem. The staff is always gracious & accomodating. The best part? It's BYOB - so you can have a fabulous meal & keep the cost down. The Chicken Tikka Masala is refreshingly light & tasty.
Good Neighborhood Indian. Poona is truly a pleasant experience from start to finish. I have eaten here twice, and was impressed both times by the welcoming, courteous service and great value. In fact, althought the food is good, it was more the friendly atmosphere that brought me back the second time. This is not the best Indian food in NY, and the dining room is kind of small and non-descript, which is why I recommend it more for locals looking to have a comfortable meal, and do not necessarily suggest that people travel here. While everything I have eaten here was good, items such as chicken tikka makhni and shrimp vindaloo stand out. Fried foods, such as samosas and poori bread were less impressive. If you live on the upper west side, or find yourself around Amsterdam ave. and craving Indian food, definitely try it.

My favorite indian restuarant in New York..
I love indian food, the sight, smell and taste. For years my favorite restaurant was Gate of India in my hometown, L.A. Having moved to NYC about 6 years ago, I hadn't found an Indian restaurant that had the same...well authentic flare..in cooking.
I found Grand Poona when they were located on 72nd st about 3 years ago, and have stayed loyal sense. What keeps me there is a combination of prices, food and extremely pleasant service.
When you go, try the Tandoori Chicken...WOW!!
