What People Are Saying About Back Room

Featured Review

Better recognized by its nom de plume, the Lower East Side Toy Company, this tucked-away speakeasy nods its head to Prohibition with its hidden entrance, working candlestick phone and curious serving vessels, but its spacious split-level interior feels straight out of a Victorian novel. Curving settees and high-backed chairs in deep reds and lush golds are set in conversation-sized groupings, and the welcoming dark wood bar is serviced by friendly black-clad professionals. Order a martini or mixed drink and it arrives in a double-handled tea cup; a bottle of beer gets wrapped in a brown paper…

Editor's Tips

What to Drink:
There's no drink list, but the bartenders will whip up whatever you desire. Bottled beers range from Beck's to Bud.
Know Before You Go:
The dress code is casual but neat, and fur is not allowed. On weekends, the bar states that it admits those only 25 and older.
The Extras:
Step back in time and use the pay phone outside the bathrooms--the novelty is worth the nickels nowadays.
Know Before You Go:
Search carefully for a nontraditional door--something straight of the board game Clue--leading to the bar's inner sanctum. The dress code is casual but neat, and fur is not allowed. On weekends, the bar states that it admits those only 25 and older.
ambiance
100.0% positive
  1. thought the bouncer was polite, the decor was fantastic, and the crowd was a great mix of LES hipsters and Meatpacking hotties!
  2. Period decor, comfortable conversation levels, call ahead, bring a date and keep the speakeasy-vibe rolling along.
  3. love the Backroom - the drinks, the staff, the decor all makes for a great spot to hang.
  4. Great atmosphere and warm space.
  5. didn't complain further because the bartender was nice enough to make me the third drink to replace the second, but the inconsistency put a sour taste on an otherwise fun night.
  6. the friendliest staff, great decor, nice crowds.
  7. The atmosphere itself was decent (6 out of 10) but the 'intangibles' were a 2-3/10, or about the rating of most of the girls there.
  8. It has a fantastic atmosphere that stays true to the speakeasy times of it's heyday.
  9. the doorman was so nice, the decor was incredible (even have a huge reproduction Titian on the back wall) and the atmosphere very diverse - people were equally comfortable in jeans or glammed up dresses.
  10. The decor is really great.
  11. the decor is absolutely fabulous!
  12. Great looking room, great ambiance, terrific attention to detail.
  13. The Back Room is fun for about the first 10 minutes.
  14. The atmosphere at this place on a Friday night was fun but the drinks ended up being disappointing.

  2. considering the drink prices - can't they afford decent speakers?
  3. didn't complain further because the bartender was nice enough to make me the third drink to replace the second, but the inconsistency put a sour taste on an otherwise fun night.
  4. The drinks were good and reasonable, and the bartender went out of his way to please.
  5. Friends birthday party was here- a little pricey but still my new favorite LES bar.
  6. The tea cups are small and the drinks are more expensive.
  7. This bar is not recommended, It looks like a wedding reception lounge, with it's clientele dressed up to the nines drinking cocktails in ridiculous coffee mugs.
  8. went for a friends party the other night and thought that the bar was a breath of fresh air!
  9. Service is slow but with all the specialty drinks they have I am not too surprised.
  10. Secondly, and most importantly, the bartender cannot make a decent drink to save her life, I paid 28 friggen dollars for two grey goose and tonics and a gin and tonic, and I watched in horror as she literally put a teaspoon of alcohol in our drinks ( the
  11. Then you realize that you don't like getting teacups of weak drinks spilled on you as you squeeze through the packed crowds to get to the bar where you're met by a rude and arrogant bartender who refuses to accept your credit card because god forbid you d
  12. in all seriousness this bar is the worst i have been to in all of lower manhattan - and talk about bad vibes, nearly everyone in this place is just there to lurk around in the spectacle of things.
  13. The drinks are pricey and served in teacups so they're smaller than usual.
  14. If you want your clientele to stay, then teach the no-brain bartenders how to pour a decent drink!
  15. Cool hangout, music ok, tea cups/mugs a bit kitschy but whatever, bartenders think they're too hot to be doing bar work.
  16. Decor is great, drinks decent although the teacups are a bit unwieldy.
  17. Decor is nice, but save your time and go spend your money at a better bar.
  18. The bar is a real gem to look at, however, they have got to be kidding re: service, etc.
  19. Bartenders made great drinks and even made suggestions
  20. The 8 dollar drinks look CUTE in teacups, but the size for the money is appalling.
  21. The atmosphere at this place on a Friday night was fun but the drinks ended up being disappointing.
  22. why does this bar bother to look so classy, if they are going to charge top-scale prices for drinks so weak they wouldn't get a toddler buzzed?
  23. when i first arrived I thought I would love it, BUT the doorman and other employees were so incredibly rude to my friends, and to the other bar patrons, that I doubt I will ever go back.

  1. The guy-girl ratio was good thanks to the absurd door policy except it doesn't matter when most of the girls there look like they haven't missed a meal since 1994.
  2. went for a friends party the other night and thought that the bar was a breath of fresh air!
  3. Also, they garnish cosmos, etc. with fresh cranberries.

  7. There are so many other nice places you can go in the city and not be hassled or intimidated by the staff.

must visit

Great place to go to,

with friends or a date it is always fun and the drinks are awesome and not crazy expensive, the vibe is mostly chill except the weekends but that's everywhere. I love it because it is fancy looking but not uptight and one can relax and enjoy.

Saturday Night

by Bradship

My friends and I decided to go in on a bottle last night so that we could have one of the couches at this bar, and lemme tell you, best choice we ever made. Wasn't that expensive, plus I was sitting next to Thomas Jane (from Hung). The service was quick, and it wound up being one f the most memorable nights out ever.

awesome!!!

This is a cool place to hang out,

It's like your cool great-uncle's study, the wood and fabric on the walls and drinks and cups, old paintings and booze, awesome. PLUS no frats screaming drunk at a TV nor sleazy Guidos to spoil the landscape.

A definite find!!

The Back Room is SO FUN

by SammyPetes

I didn't want to leave. I was there until they literally turned on the lights and started herding us towards the door. I loved the dark sexy room, the cute tea cups, the strong drinks, and the MUSIC! I had no idea people danced there! I want to go back for my birthday or New Years Eve or something. A good place to get bottle service because they aren't crazy expensive. This was the sexiest bar I have been in for a long time.
