What People Are Saying About Back Room

Better recognized by its nom de plume, the Lower East Side Toy Company, this tucked-away speakeasy nods its head to Prohibition with its hidden entrance, working candlestick phone and curious serving vessels, but its spacious split-level interior feels straight out of a Victorian novel. Curving settees and high-backed chairs in deep reds and lush golds are set in conversation-sized groupings, and the welcoming dark wood bar is serviced by friendly black-clad professionals. Order a martini or mixed drink and it arrives in a double-handled tea cup; a bottle of beer gets wrapped in a brown paper…
The place has gone downhill.

It's all pretty kitschy, but everyone loves a bit of kitsch when they're drunk. Decor is nice, but save your time and go spend your money at a better bar... unless you really like being treated like sh.t by the bouncer/bartenders, getting served weak drinks in tiny quantities, and being surrounded by tourists, wannabes, and insecure a-holes.
- Pros: the decor isn't bad?
- Cons: bad crowd, money pit, weak drinks

The Back Room is fun for about the first 10 minutes.
Then you realize that you don't like getting teacups of weak drinks spilled on you as you squeeze through the packed crowds to get to the bar where you're met by a rude and arrogant bartender who refuses to accept your credit card because god forbid you don't want to buy 4 drinks in order to meet the somewhat illegal credit card minimum.
Don't go here.
Beautiful and Secretive

great concept for a bar, and a really pretty one at that. my friends from out of town always love the whole "secret" thing, and once we get there it's totally worth it. the tea cups are a little hard to drink from, but worth it for the look. we've always had a good time there!
The Details on Back Room
What to Drink:
There's no drink list, but the bartenders will whip up whatever you desire. Bottled beers range from Beck's to Bud.
Know Before You Go:
The dress code is casual but neat, and fur is not allowed. On weekends, the bar states that it admits those only 25 and older.
The Extras:
Step back in time and use the pay phone outside the bathrooms--the novelty is worth the nickels nowadays.
Know Before You Go:
Search carefully for a nontraditional door--something straight of the board game Clue--leading to the bar's inner sanctum. The dress code is casual but neat, and fur is not allowed. On weekends, the bar states that it admits those only 25 and older.
