Editorial Review for Zucco: Le French Diner – by Karen Hudes

In Short
Zucco, the star-monikered French chef who opened Brooklyn's Cafe Lafayette, hand-built this petite bistro, which holds a bar and tables to seat 18 people. A tin ceiling, a beaded chandelier, boxing photos and fruit crates give it a bohemian feel, enhanced by Zucco's largely French repartee. Classics such as cassoulet, escargots, steak frites and lapin a la moutarde, as well as omelets, Parisian sandwiches and tarte tatin are the menu's bread and butter.

Insider Tips

Know Before You Go

Zucco does not take reservations, and the room fills up quickly. Those who dine at 6pm can usually avoid a wait. A few extra sidewalk tables open up in the summer.

The frisée aux lardons is my preferred dish at Zucco, if you like this dish you need to order it. Depending on the cook on duty, it gets even better. Then you have the lamb shank, it's not on the menu, but they have it Tuesday through Saturday. The goat cheese salad is also a must-have. The place is very small, so don't even bother going there in large groups, there's simply no room. They don't serve Bud Light, hate ketchup, play all sorts of music at a high volume, and the seats are uncomfortable. Enjoy!

Pros: Frisée aux lardons, goat cheese salad, lamb shank, confit de canard, etc.

Cons: Fish

I brought a date to Zucco le French Diner on Saturday Night. We had read the reviews about how small it is, and went early (about 6:30) and had no trouble getting a table. The food was excellent. I would recomend this restraunt to anyone. It is great for a date or a small group because of the atmosphere. Food and drinks are served by the owner who is every interested in making sure everyone enjoys their time.

Pros: Excellent Food, great atmosphere

Cons: small, hard to get a table late
