Editorial Review for Sabry's Seafood – by Justin Hartung

The Scene
With overly bright track lighting and koi-patterned tables, Sabry's resembles a Chinese take-out joint more than an elegant seafood palace. Though it's a long walk from the subway, the crowd of locals and MetroCard adventurers don't seem to mind. The festive mood is enhanced by an open kitchen and a dazzling display of red- and silver-dappled snapper on ice.

The Draw
Sabry's menu juggles Egyptian seafood with the neighborhood's other reigning cuisine, Italian, though the former is its strength. Entrees come with an iceberg and tomato salad, which rises above blandness with silky tahini dressing, and a basket of fluffy pita bread. Grilled octopus is tender enough to erase any memories of rubbery cephalopods, though not so the chewy calamari in a tagine (clay cooking pot). Try instead the roasted whole snapper, flaky and dusted with cumin, or garlicky chunks of baby shark, perfectly paired with crunchy green beans and pickled red cabbage.

Insider Tips

What to Drink

In accordance with Muslim doctrine, no alcohol is served, and diners aren't allowed to bring their own. Fortunately, strawberry juice with milk or ultra-tart lemonade makes a refreshing alternative.

Know Before You Go

Entree portions are huge, so order sparingly from the limited appetizer menu.

The Extras

Sabry's doesn't serve dessert either, but Steinway Street is a haven for sweet Middle Eastern treats.

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

Its definately someplace I go occassionally and recommend lots of friends to go. If you're a seafood lover, its amazing. The food is fresh and you can pick your own fish before cooking. They offer ur choice of fish that can be grilled in wheatgerm,(which you peel off before eating) Its absolutely spectacular and filled with flavor. My habit now is to order tea with fresh mint at the end of the meal. The prices are reasonable, but the bathroom can be upgraded...otherwise, I give Chef Sabry 5 stars for excellent food!

Pros: excellent fresh seafood

Cons: sometimes slow service but its worth the wait

if you like eating garbage. The food and service are horrible at best. I seriously think they served us feces disguised as food. Do yourself a favor, don't go.

Pros: Rear end explosion Inducing so it can't permanetly harm you

Cons: Everything Else

Low-key, high-scoring Egyptian seafood restaurant is worth the trek from the subway.  See the full editorial review.
