Worst place to go to. WARNING. Terrible place. The owner seems friendly and nice until he tries to take extra money from you. We had called him up a group of over 20 and were basically make reservations so we dont end up going there and have no room. We were assured it would be fine. When we showed up there he wanted to collect 15$ per person at the door AND ONTOP OF THAT you still have to pay for everything..This was on a thursday night like its a club or something. Moreover, their "dj" (a kid playing itunes on his laptop) is a teenage nuisance always looking to cause trouble. That thursday night he started a massive brawl that over 40 people partook in. Terrible place to go to terrible owner terrible staff. My hispanic friends werent allowe in because the owner said "I dont like that kind of crowd here". So ontop of all this hes a racist owner too

Terrible food and service with a smile. My husband and I decided to try this place out for Valentines day and unfortunately we had not read all these terrible reviews I'm reading now. The place is a huge draw for the teenagers in Astoria because of the loud music and hookah which is fine though not what we were looking for. We decided to go with the vibe and try to enjoy our food. The lamb tagine and couscous got rave ratings in the few reviews I did read. I have to agree with previous reviews on this site, the meat was fine, except for the fact it was not lamb but beef, the food was flavorless and the plate was mostly filled with canned peas and potatoes, the couscous was the same, no flavor! The tagine according to the menu is supposed to come with rice, and when we questioned the waiter and chef they both denied that it should even though the menu cearly says so. The "Moroccan" bread that came with our meal was actually italian bread. Unfortunately, we had already ordered a hookah and the Moroccan tea before we discovered the terrible food, however, these two items were actually good, so we stayed and finished up and our bill still came out to 25 dollars with a 4 dollar gratuity they added themselves. Luckily there is a great Afghani place across the street and we were able to salvage our Valentines day dinner.

Overall, this place was a complete and utter disappointment food wise, but if you're a teen and you like hookah check it out.

As a former waitress...DON'T EAT HERE. I worked as a waitress at Jour et Nuit a few years ago. The owner was kind enough to give me a job when I was in NYC for the summer which I was grateful for, but I quickly realized working here was a big mistake.

The owner would purposely unplug the credit card machine and make me tell customers that it was broken and they'd have to use the ATM across the street. He would also make me add a service charge onto the bill when I knew the food wasn't good and the customers were unhappy. It put me in a very awkward situation.

I never saw him mop the floors or clean the restaurant and we had to tap out the bread baskets on the sink "in case there were cockroaches in them" before putting the bread in to serve to the customers. The only thing I would eat from there is the french fries and the tea. How this place got a Zagat rating I will NEVER know.

Not to mention the fact that he hardly ever paid me for my work, in fact he still owes me money but I'm NOT going back there to get it.

Not a good choice at all.. To start it off, when we walked into the restaurant, we didn't even receive a menu! When one of the many waiters/servers we had that night approached us and asked us if we wanted drinks and hookah, we were left with just our drinks, waiting to be attended to. After we caught the waiter's attention and asked for menus, she replied with, "Oh! I thought you guys just came in here for drinks!" Ok, so that was number 1. Number 2, when my hubby and I ordered our food, which was lamb tagine and lamb kebab, we were thinking that it was going to come with rice and Moroccan bread, as stated on the menu, but it didn't. Instead, another waiter brought us our food along with one side of french fries and not Moroccan bread, but Italian bread. Hubby didn't even get fries! I called the waiter back and explained to him that the menu said our dishes come with rice, and he said that they had no more rice, then offering couscous or french fries in its place. I said that the couscous would do. So, he brought out couscous for me, but keep in mind that hubby never received his side. So, I called him back and told him that hubby's order was supposed to come with rice and he didn't receive anything in its place. He said, "Well, the couscous was on the house, so we can't really give you another side of couscous." Why not? The couscous was supposed to replace the rice that we didn't receive. Never again. Plus, they added a "service charge" of $6, which I'm guessing was because they knew they weren't great and wouldn't have received a tip from us. The music and setting were nice, until they started to develop technical difficulties with the CD and changed it to very loud, obnoxious rap music that totally didn't fit the theme at all. On a positive note, my lamb kebab was seasoned perfectly and the lamb in the tagine was very tender, (even though there were more peas, olives, and other additives in it to bulk up the lamb tagine than actual lamb).

Tagine and Couscous. Stick to the Tagine and Couscous and you are going to love this place. You can also try Sheesha but i am no hookah smoker.

The Lamb Tagine is the best. Try the fish tagine too. mint tea is very good. I like their Casablanca beer too.

Couscous is great in the winter. If it is cold try the couscous. The chef is very friendly old country style. If he likes you he might even cook something special off the menu for you.

Overall. Good trip.

Terrible, disgusting restaurant. My husband and I went to this restuarant for Valentines day 2009. I have never been more turned off by food or service. Ever. Even in cheap restuarants in developing countries.

Where to begin? Well, the picture shown isn't how it looks. It is dark, dingy, narrow and doesn't have those draped tents. Instead, there are black lights inserted into the floresent overhead fixtures. It was empty except for a group of four teenagers flirting and taking pictures around a hookah. A stereo was playing extremely loud techno music, the kind that would be passable at a disco, but had no place in a dining environment.

When we ordered tap water, the owner brought us glasses of water with the cloudy bubbles still in them and argued that the cloudiness indicated that his water was "no good" and that we should drink bottled water. Seriously? Anyone who lives in NYC has their tap water look like that when it comes out of the faucet. We told him that we weren't worried about the water and he sort of shrugged his shoulders like he'd warned us. Of course the water cleared up after a few seconds and tasted fine. Way to try to pad the bill.

When our food came, we couldn't eat it and believe me, I love Morrocan food. I had the vegatable tagine and my husband the lamb tagine. They were strange and tangy. The lamb was unbelievably gristly and came with canned peas. I could taste the "canned food" taste over top of the pervading flavor of over-boiled cabbage. We left them untouched.

AT this point, it was so uncomfortable, that we decided to leave. My husband walked up to the bar/open kitchen area and offered to pay. The bill was $22, my husband handed over $40. The owner returned $15. I suppose he wanted a ~10% tip for himself as he probably figuered out that we weren't going to leave it.

This place has bad food, bad service and a bad environment. Save you $22 (or $25) and eat at some place else.!

yummy Moroccan food. My husband and I absolutely loved this restaurant. We have many Moroccan friends and are no strangers to Moroccan food. We brought our family including our 2 year old niece. so there were 7 of us. We thought the food and service were great. Don't let the bland entryway fool you.. The decor inside was artsy and authentic. We'll definitely go back often.

Terrific, if you enjoy paying for terrible food and service. O, where to begin?

Tried on basis of good reviews, should have followed instinct and left before the food arrived....

We were shown to table in nearly empty room around 8:30 on a Fri evening. Friendly waiter had difficulty understanding our requests whether given in English or French -- it could have been the loud Arabic pop music -- pointing at the menu seemed to help. Despite this, he brought a bottle of wine instead of the single glass we wanted, it took three requests of two different waiters to get water, our waiter finally brought bottles of Poland Springs (for which we were charged) although the table opposite had glasses, took still another request to get glasses to put it in. Same waiter seemed to have difficulties negotiating the furniture: he struggled twice with an empty chair at a neighboring table before banishing it to the edge of the room. Also dropped water bottle in transit.

Despite lack of custom, food took some time to arrive. My daughter had half portions of the beet and cucumber salad, and I had Pastilla/eggrolls with chicken, neither distinguished. But the tajines we ordered, fish and lamb, were nearly inedible. The lamb was gristley, served in a bland, thin sauce with canned peas and chunks of potatoes. My husband took two bites of his fish tajine before setting it aside.

Oddly, the staff, including the chef (owner?), was very solicitous, visiting the table to report being out of the soup, and asking how we liked the food. They should have had a clue when they saw our barely touched plates....my husband did not hold back his opinion when the chef asked again about the food as he was settling the bill at the front of the restaurant, to the great amusement of the waiters. A visit to the restaurant website posts "If you are not completely satisfied with our Couscous or Tajin, you don?t pay." No mention of this policy as we shelled out $43 for our 'meal'....

My advice: AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!
