Editorial Review for 24 Prince – by Justin Hartung

The Scene
The unassuming exterior of this Nolita eatery doesn't include a sign; just look for the row of floor-to-ceiling windows, which swing open on hot summer nights. Trendy touches--boxy wine racks, oddly shaped banquets--fill the space, along with more vintage speakeasy nods like classic green-striped wallpaper. The boisterous crowd is decidedly more SoHo chichi than Bowery barfly.

The Food
The menu works best when, like the decor, it strives to have it both ways, delivering tricked-out versions of comfort-food classics. An appetizer of mac-and-cheese wrapped in crispy phyllo cones gets a modern gouda infusion, while a seemingly ordinary salad scores with candied walnuts and a mint-infused white balsamic dressing. Entrees, however, are uneven. A spot-on New York strip steak is served with lackluster fries; fried bass gets shortchanged on spices; and mushrooms drown in a watery risotto. Desserts end on an up-note--try mellow berries with cream sauce or the ultra-decadent PB&J ice-cream sandwich.

What to Drink

The continent-hopping wine list is reasonable, and the under-$25 Valpolicella pairs nicely with a variety of dishes.

terrible terrible terrible, don't go here. went here for brunch and had to wait for the food for about an hour. took them 30min to make our cocktails while we waited for our food and they had to be repeatedly reminded. the restaurant wasn't even full! the food was ok, but not worth the wait at all. on top of that, when we asked to speak to the manager, the hostess came over instead and LIED to us, saying she is the manager (somebody else told us the manager is a man). she didn't even apologize for the slow service or any other complaints. when we found the real manager, he wasn't very apologetic either. horrible horrible dining experience. not acceptable at all.

Pros: good location

Cons: terrible, rude service, staff lie to customers

So, this is my first restaurant review. Just being honest. I went to 24 prince Friday night for dinner with a good friend. We sat outside in the "backyard", which, while not being full of plants and green things, was a great find considering it was a friday night and we only had to wait 15 minutes and there are NO outside eating places in this neighborhood beside this one, as we discovered walking around the nieghborhood and being told, no, everywhere we went. The food was good. Actually, very good. Simple, easy and very good. It is not the place that is going to wow you with decadent amazingness, but kind of reminds you of something you could make at home, but, could never make it near as good. Sorry, I'm rambling. But anyways, the food took a long time, my only complaint. Our dessert took at least 20 minutes, which is sad . But it was good. Regardless of the complaint, the food was very good. The service was amazing. Our server whose name I forget but I think started with an S - Sam - Steve - something like that, was so helpful. He even told us that we had ordered too much food and suggested we order less. and he was right. And, further, he was nice. Not that fake nice, you know, that waiters and waitresses are, but to us, genuinely nice. We asked him what to do in the neighborhood during meal, and when he brought the bill, he brought a list of places and locations where we should go. We are not from New York, so this was amazing. Sorry to ramble again. But, this restaurant is really good. The back yard-ish area is nice, the service superb and more than knowlegeable, and the feel is very "new york", at least from a seattler's point of view.

Pros: Service, backyard, location

Cons: waiting
