What People Are Saying About 24 Prince

The exterior of this Nolita eatery, comprised of a row of floor-to-ceiling windows and a difficult-to-read sign, is unassuming. Trendy touches--boxy wine racks, oddly shaped banquets--fill the space, along with more vintage speakeasy nods like classic green-striped wallpaper. The boisterous crowd is decidedly more Soho chichi than Bowery barfly. The menu works best when, like the decor, it strives to have it both ways, delivering tricked-out versions of comfort-food classics. Entrees, however, are uneven. Desserts end on an up-note.
Editor's Tips
- What to Drink:
- The continent-hopping wine list is reasonable, and the under-$25 Valpolicella pairs nicely with a variety of dishes.

Don't even bother - ignore the hype

My wife and I ate at 24 Prince recently as part of a prix fixe dinner organized by a local winery, each course being paired with a wine. The one positive thing about this evening, was that the food and wine pairings worked well and that was due to the winery staff knowing what they were doing.
The rest of the dining experience was subpar:
- we were seated in the back of the restaurant (as were other diners part of this winery's event) near the restroom and near the back door, where the staff would drag a large garbage pail every hour or so, open the back door, empty the garbage and then drag it back in. The visual appeal of this, coupled with the gust of freezing air left a memorable impression. As did having to look at the people waiting in line for the one bathroom.
- the paper napkins and cheap utensils should have been the tipoff that the worst was yet to come.
- the portions of the first two courses was of a tasting menu size - the dinner was not advertised as a tasting menu so this was surprising.
- since the portions were small, we were still fairly hungry while waiting for our entrees. We noticed other tables had gotten a basket of bread but not us. We asked for some bread and they provided some.
- did I mention that we were waiting for our entrees? At least 20 minutes from the time they cleared the previous course!! We had to remind them and they profusely apologized, but it was too little, too late. In fact, the wine pairing I had received for the entree was finished by the time the entree arrived. The poured us some more, which was expected, but given the place was not that crowded, we were baffled as to why there was such a delay.
- at this point, I was contemplating what kind of tip I should leave - my thoughts hovering around 10% or less (note: I usually leave at least 20% for most dining experiences). When the bill came, I was shocked to see that they had added a 20% gratuity to our bill!! I have seen this for parties of 4 or more, but we were a party of 2. I reluctantly paid this because it may have been the arrangement because of the winery event, but in hindsight, I should have complained. The fact that the staff did this underlines the fact that this place is doomed for failure.
- The wine dinner was advertised as a chance to meet the owner/chef, Nikki Cascone. She was nowhere to be found - never made an "appearance". Not that it would have mattered - we were unimpressed overall. She might be a decent cook, but as the owner of a restaurant, she has failed miserably. She must be too busy planning her upcoming wedding.
I would be very surprised if 24 Prince is still around in 6-12 months. People enjoy good food but you cannot survive on that alone. The attitude and the lack of service and small details (get some decent napkins and cutlery and stop dragging the trash around the dining room!) will kill this place.
I will never be back and will go out of my way to tell as many people as possible to STAY AWAY!!!
- Pros: PRO: Decent quality of food
- Cons: CONS: Everything else - service, price, ambience,
rip off, bad food

I ate there with a big group, four of us ordered the tuna and each was cooked differently, only one seemed good. The shrimp chop salad had three small pieces of shrimp, and the salad was not chopped. I asked for more sauce, and they came back with a thimble. Portions were very small, and the bill came out to be very large.
- Pros: none
- Cons: expensive and bad food
Good Food, Good Service and easy on the wallet

After walking around nolita and visiting the bowery musium I decided to stop at 24 Prince for an early dinner. I had been to 24 Prince for a friends birthday party about a year ago and loved the meatloaf. When we walked in the host sat us right away. Our server was the same server who waited on me at my friends birthday. He was friendly and helpful, he told us some of the must haves on the menu. My friend and I decided to share a flatbread as an app, and for our entree's I had the meatloaf and she had the tuna dish(it looked and smelled great but she would let me taste). The bartender makes a great martini and my friend loved the pear pop. If i wanted to be picky i would say my latte wasn't warm enough but everything else was great and I will be back.
- Pros: Ambience, friendly service, location, food & price
- Cons: location, over eating
Perfect Spot Rest.

The prices are good for a fine dining restaurant that is usually quiet and casual, the food always tastes good, and they provide excellent waitstaff customer service. I've had the burger and apple & endive, both quite good.Perfect spot.
My regular brunch spot- go early

I was shopping in nolita and saw the sign about the chef Nikki being on TOP CHEF, had to go in. There was a 15 minute wait but it was worth it. We had my 8 year old son with us and my girlfriend and I enjoyed all of the food. I am only writing this because I saw some of the other reviews and disagreed. i use city search alot and I alwyas see both good and bad reviews i just try to read a lot of them. Try to get their early so there is no wait. It is a very comfortable, affordabel and delicious place.
- Pros: Great food, kid friendly
- Cons: had to wait a little bit at brunch..to be expected
