“The service was attentive and respectful without being over-bearing and annoying.”
“The seafood on the other-hand, everything from the red-snapper to the skate was delicious and GENEROUS in portions.”
“We were a very large party (10) for lunch and whatever pleasant experience could be derived from the interesting menu and inviting decor was quickly dampened by an incredibly slow kitchen and service that was beyond bad.”
Come join us in our beautiful dining room with some the "best seating in the city." We specialize in fresh Mediterranean cuisine with Greek, Turkish and Italian influences. While relaxing on our plush banquettes with a specialty drink from the bar, you will feel as though you are in a Greek palace surround by bulbous white columns. We feature octopus nicoise, souvlaki kebabs served with mint-flavored tahini however out specialty is our fresh-grilled fish including dorado or branzino. Our lamb chops are among the best in the city which go very well our ouzo menthe cocktail (lemonade, ouzo, mint). End your meal by endulging in our signature house panna cotta made with yogurt or the cigar-shaped phyllo filled with spiced apples. …
A big, airy space with a pan-Mediterranean menu, Barbounia has found a niche for itself serving very fresh, tasty and pointedly unchallenging food . Everything is scrupulously light, including the bill, which is pretty reasonable for this neighborhood.
Bad Service.
Not good, due to the offensive service. It one of those places that takes your really nice evening and just craps on it.
I brought my girlfriend and parents for dinner here tonight at 7. We had the dorado & bronzini dishes, all good BUT
The service was downright insulting. Our waiter/wait staff could barely speak English but were likely eastern Mediterranean as would be appropriate. They seemed to be on drugs. They were slurring their speech...and no less than 7 times completely interrupted the table
The host was very rude and we waited for an hour an a half. We asked the host how long will the wait be. He said half an hour. So we had a drink. Half an hour later, we came to the host, he said, another 15 minutes. Nothing. We again asked the host, then he said, after we have already waited 45 that it will be another half an hour. I said that if he told us right away that it would be more than an hour, we would not have stayed. He said :"I'm not a psychic." He was so rude, and we are never coming back to Barbounia again! The host was a tall guy with black-rim glasses. The rudest host in the history. I hope the owner reads this and fires him, or else he'll lose more customers than just the two of us.
Pushy Service-OK food. My friend and I went to Barbounia on a Wednesday evening. We had a nazi of a waitress (with long reddish hair tied back in a pony tail). While we were looking at the menu she hovered over us and said "I need to get the order in" so we ordered an appetizer (thinking that would get her off our back for a few minutes) and she said (you NEED to order the entree at the same time)---so we rushed and made our selection. The bread is delicious, but the Malbec I had was served warm and the dinner portions were miniscule and food just...OK. Even though there were plenty of empty tables and absolutely no one waiting, the busboy kept attempting to remove our plates though we were only half done, while the nazi waitress hovered on during our meal making us feel uncomfortable. I would not go again.
Best Mediterranean Food!. Although reluctant when I saw the tacky interior, my worries were put at ease once we were greeted by such a friendly staff. The food was also surprisingly tasty. The Mediterranean spreads were all delicious and the octopus was tender and tasty! The best part of all, was that the bill was more than reasonable!
Yummmm! Great atmosphere and delicious food!. Great place to people watch! Excellent food which is ultra healthy and flavorful. Any night of the week a great place to enjoy your dinner.
Holy Cow!.
From the front to the back this is where its at!
I dined here last night, and as usual this restaurant never seems to refrain in out doing itself. Great crowd, educated and obliging waitstaff, and an extremely welcoming host!
I could go every night...and still have fun. Amazing food...amazing decor...amazing crowd!! Great place for a date...a party...a business meeting...a birthday. One of my "go-to" places in New York. Always a good time and great food. AG
A popular Mediterranean resto in the Flatiron District.. A big, airy space with a pan-Mediterranean menu, Barbounia has found a niche for itself serving very fresh, unchallenging food to a crowd comprised mostly of Park Avenue South office workers. If the place's generically Mediterranean decor has something of an Olive Garden vibe, it's not the fault of the food, which is surprisingly good. Start with a platter of spreads (tsatziki, hummus, spicy feta, taramosalata) and move on from there to dishes like grilled octopus with fennel or Turkish lachma hajuan, a kind of lamb pizza. Everything is scrupulously light, including the bill, which is pretty reasonable for this neighborhood.
