Editorial Review for A Voce – by Erin Behan

The Scene
An upper-crust crowd relaxes in a modern dining room that feels at home on Madison Avenue. The Eames swivel chairs create an almost boardroom feel, albeit a very well-appointed one with leather-topped tables and floor-to-ceiling windows. Service, while knowledgeable, can lag between courses without apology.

The Food
Chef Andrew Carmellini (Cafe Boulud) crafts his menu around familiar Italian classics, and the intensity of flavors showcase his quality ingredients. Savory duck meatballs pique the appetite, and a starter of grilled asparagus topped with fried egg astounds with the vegetable's essence fully intact. The lamb papardelle, brightened with mint and enriched by ricotta, wins as the menu's most comforting dish. And a tender, fennel-glazed duck excites more than the almost bland lamb shank. Better to fill up a side of creamy polenta than save room for less invigorating desserts like the too-sweet roasted pineapple and mildly flavored vanilla panna cotta.

What to Drink

A bottle of 2002 Morgan Syrah ($52), with its full-bodied fruitiness, never overpowers the nuanced flavors of the menu.

2 Star Rating: Below Average

I went to a Voce this past weekend and it was so hot and humid inside I couldn't enjoy a single part of the experience. I wish we had left instead of paying for food that I would have enjoyed more if I had made it in the comfort of my own home. Who needs a chef to cook for you if you're sweating through a meal? The whole place had an air of unprofessionalism. If you can't even make your restaurant comfortable temperature-wise, how can you expect people to pay these prices and want to come back? Its totally ridiculous. Don't go unless you want an over-priced sauna or it's winter. . . assuming they have heat.

Cons: heat, slow service

Well, I couldn't really leave a review of the food. The hours of the restaurant are until 11pm. But I guess since it was "slow" I couldn't make a reservation even for 10pm. "I think we'll probably close around 9:30" the reservationist said. I'm sorry... This is New York City. If you are open until 11pm you should stand there with the door open until 11pm. Especially if someone is calling for reservations at 10pm. Ridiculous. This place needs a little dose of professionalism. I won't try to go back.

Pros: Good neighborhood

Cons: Hours of operation are unclear. Needs a little professionalism.
