From The Owner of A Voce

Andrew Carmellini, formerly of Boulud, brings molto Italiano cuisine to the Flatiron district. Word of mouth ( A Voce in Italian) has it…

What Our Expert Scouts Say

December 08, 2012

The departure of opening chef Andrew Carmellini was expected by nearly everyone to be the death knell for A Voce, an overpriced Italian restaurant in a city packed with equally fine rivals. His replacement by an out-of-town chef nobody had ever heard of didn't help. But Missy Robbins has done a great job of keeping the food fresh and interesting, keeping the pastas first rate while serving some of the most robust and interesting proteins in the $25 spaghetti sweepstakes.

too hot, too loud, too slow. I went to a Voce this past weekend and it was so hot and humid inside I couldn't enjoy a single part of the experience. I wish we had left instead of paying for food that I would have enjoyed more if I had made it in the comfort of my own home. Who needs a chef to cook for you if you're sweating through a meal? The whole place had an air of unprofessionalism. If you can't even make your restaurant comfortable temperature-wise, how can you expect people to pay these prices and want to come back? Its totally ridiculous. Don't go unless you want an over-priced sauna or it's winter. . . assuming they have heat.

When do you close?. Well, I couldn't really leave a review of the food. The hours of the restaurant are until 11pm. But I guess since it was "slow" I couldn't make a reservation even for 10pm. "I think we'll probably close around 9:30" the reservationist said. I'm sorry... This is New York City. If you are open until 11pm you should stand there with the door open until 11pm. Especially if someone is calling for reservations at 10pm. Ridiculous. This place needs a little dose of professionalism. I won't try to go back.

Love this place!. I've been here to eat and drink outside a couple times now and I love it! The ambiance is great with the palm plants and lounge area. Perfect to have a drink and then sit down for dinner. The food on the menu is fancy Italian and a little funky. I had the chicken which comes with an orange-colored foam on it that was actually really good. The sugared cream-filled donuts with warm chocolate sauce for dessert are DELISH! Also, the service is great and everyone is super accommodating.

Divine sidewalk seating, amazing food.. Avoce is my favorite place in all of NYC. The food is just terrific, the service is impeccable and the side walk dinning scene just down from Madison Square Park is one not to be missed. Some how Avoce manages to be elegant and hip all at the same time. This is the kind of restaurant that makes uptowners envious of downtowners. I highly recommend the Sardinian Sheep's Milk Ricotta, the Roasted Beet Salad and the Marinated Chicken alla Griglia. Your mouth will throw a party.

not as great as i remember. been to a voce many times since it opened. usually we don't make reservations and this time was no exception. i heard that andrew carmelini was on his way out so my girlfriend and i decided to make one last trip before his exit. we were seated at teh back of the room and that doesn;t bother me at all. it took a while for anyone to take our order and when they did they got one of the apps wrong, again no big deal. what bothered us the most actually was that we were looking at the wine list and the somelier kept coming over even though we said we didnt need help. my girlfriend went to the bathroom and the guy had the nerve to come over and make a sleezy comment about how goodlooking she was. it was totally inapropriate and it really changed the whole night for us. we ended up ordering a bottle anyway and the wine was nothing to speak of. also the duck meatballs which we always get really fell flat this time. overall the food didn't rock our world and the whole wine situation rubbed us the wrong way and we won't be coming back.

bad service. we went for a celebratory dinner and were rushed from the minute we sat down. one of the members of our party was late, but the rest of us ordered on time, etc. we were rushed to make our selections, we got our check before we even asked for it, etc.

When we complained to the manager, he yelled at us and walked away!

We spent too much money to be treated like this.

Please don't go here.

delicious and cozy dinner!. yum.. i highly recommend this place! my boyfriend and i went and it felt like a romantic and cozy place, and the people sitting next to us were business types who were definitely NOT having a romantic dinner. the waiter was great, he totally adapted to their more formal attitude and our much more casual one.. he made great wine recommendations to me and suggested my boyfriend try this cocktail, which showed up bright green in a martini glass. a little cheesey but what are you gonna do! the duck meatballs were delicious and also my raviolis tasted fresh and were perfectly cooked. go back? we will!!!

great innovative italian. This place has a really good vibe and a great italian influenced menu. During the summer the outdoor seating is great. I strongly recommend the duck meatball appetizer which are out of this world!

Great dinner experience. My wife and I went to A Voce on Sunday night and it was a delightful experience. The decor shares common traits with the food: simple but elegant, tasteful and refined.

We arrived a few minutes early and were greeted right away by the maitre d'. He invited us to sit at the bar and have a drink, while our table was getting readied. We followed his recommendation and had two glasses of Moscato d'Asti. Very quickly, we were invited to sit down.

First note: the chairs were incredibly comfortable and my wife enjoyed the fact that you could spin at will! Second: the waiter that came in was a great professional. He went through the menu and answered any of our questions painlessly and with great passion. He depicted the dishes so well that by the time he was done, we were ready to order up the entire menu.

You want proof? Here was our meal: sheep's milk ricotta, crostini alla toscana, duck meatballs for appetizers; potato gnocchi, sweet corn ravioli for the main courses; wild mushroom orzo, broccoli rabe as sides (because we were curious); Tuscan doughnuts and Apple crostata for desserts! We asked the maitre d' to do a wine pairing and he did so with brio. The nice part is that he did not choose the most expensive items but the right ones. That is rare in NY where greed often comes into play upon such request...

All in all, we had a great evening and left very happy and definitely full. A voce, we'll spread the word...

$25 glasses of champagne...horrible service. Should have read reviews on here before I went! My three friends and I sat outside to celebrate a birthday. We ordered some glasses of champagne. When the waiter brought the check after a half an hour, our jaws dropped and we were sure there had been a mixup-- the check was $150!! He had brought champagne that was $25 a glass! As a former waitress, the polite thing would have been to give us the heads up that there was apparently no "house" champagne, or to suggest a bottle...since the equivalent price would have gotten us at least 2 bottles of wine. So dishonest and sleazy. It's too bad, because the restaurant was cute but that experience totally ruined it for me!!
