Editorial Review for The Annex – by Katie Heffernan
In Short
The second venture from the founders of Dark Room progresses their style from a hip DJ den to word-of-mouth live music. Rich with golden lighting against mahogany walls, the narrow shoebox of a room tunnels your vision to a tiny raised stage, where mostly indie shows draw swarms of neighborhood scenesters. A few circular booths cradle groups, and a second-story balcony and lounge allows a bird's-eye view of it all.

The bouncer Keith was the nicest man ever. He welcomed us to the bar freely and was excited at the idea of having a bunch of girls at Annex. However, the woman collecting the $5 at the door rudely asked us group of girls WHY we were entering the bar. She then proceeded to call my 115 pound friend a fat *ss and to move along. She called us b*tches and spoke innapropriately to us. As we walked up the stairs she screamed profanities at us for no reason at all. When we left and spoke to the bouncer he apologized greatly. I do not write reviews, but I thought it was worth it to let people know to avoid this hell hole. I have never encountered a ruder person in my life. The staff is rude and mean-hearted people. DO NOT GIVE YOUR BUSINESS TO THIS PLACE!
Pros: None
Cons: Rude staff. Overpriced. Terrible bar.

Could be a cool place but it's like their deliberately trying to be obnoxious to show that they're cooler than you. Except they're not. I came to see a friend's band who was playing there and he almost cancelled because the woman at the door was so rude to us. They are in the business of ripping off inexperienced bands of cover charges, not developing a live music scene. A band would have to be desperate to play there again. The strange thing is they have a nice place and a great sound system that they play so loudly it's no longer enjoyable and that's why they can act hostile because there's no way they'd ever repeat business. The one positive in the whole place from my experience is the doorman who was actually very nice and funny.
