What Our Expert Scouts Say

November 11, 2012

One of the oldest and most venerable of all New York pizzerias, Patsy's has a character all its own, mostly deriving from its remote East Harlem location and its ancient coal-burning oven. The pies are good but the slices are better, thin and crusty, and with the greasy orange cheese / sauce mixture that defines New York pizza.

Patsy's Pizza = true love. Hands down the best pizza on the planet. My bf and I go to the walk-up counter and order a pie. In about 12 minutes, the thing is gone. Need I say more?

I love this place. I wasn't here for the pizza so I can't comment on that yet but what I had was very good. The service was quick and friendly. Everyone was smiling so that made me feel welcome. I thought the restaurant was nice and clean. I ordered the vitello alla marsala and I was pretty impressed. The veal and the mushrooms were cooked perfectly. The potato balls were not dry at all... in fact it was buttery. The only downside... they only take cash which is OK if you know about it ahead of time. I'll be back for sure.

Not that great. Was hoping for a New York style deli and bakery, what I got was cardboard tasking cakes that seemed unfresh. I dont understand how you can have unfresh cakes when this is Manhattan and you expect a ton of foot traffic, but oh well.

Forget About It. I have gone to this coal-oven pizza landmark twice in the lastt six months. I expected to get tthin- crusted, bottom-blackened, blistered pizza that are the hallmarks of old-school coal-oven pizza. This had been true in the past. Instead, the pizza was undercooked, soft and doughy. You can get better pizza at Dominos. Eveerybody can have a bad day (or two), so I wrote a letter to the owner. I anticipated receiving an explanation, apology or, perhaps, an offer of a free pizza to make amends. Instead, my letter was never answered). If you want what I expected,en for coal offen pizza, go to Lombardi's, Grimaldi's in Brooklyn or Pepe's in New Haven. Don't go to Patsy's. They have lost it and don't care.

Bad Customer Service. I went to Patsy's yesterday because last time I was there (1 to 2 months prior) there was a sign for their "Roll Back the Prices Day" and it said August 26th.

When i arrived, much to my surprise, there wasn't much of a line. I went inside to speak to an employee and I was told that this year's "Roll Back the Prices Day" was August 11th. I informed them that I was there not more than two months previously and their sign (which was now taped over with August 11th) stated that August 26th. Not that it is a big deal, but I was a bit surprised and disappointed that management thought nothing of the mix-up. Even when I called to follow up on the events of the previous day, I got the same lack of accountability. There was no offer to honor the special or even a simple apology. As far as they were concerned, it was okay to use 2 to 3 year old signage.

All in all, I for one won't be going back to Patsy's. I have actually patronized the establishment a bit and enjoyed the pizza, but never have I encountered an establishment that treats a customer in such a manner, especially since they were in the wrong.

Note to Patsy's: Even if you don't honor the special, it is okay to admit fault. It is the least you can do, that and not repeating the same lazy approach to signage going forward. As it stands, the signage for this years event, which has past, is still up (with tape affixed to the date). Watch them claim ignorance if someone else walks by and thinks next years event is on August 11th. Stop being cheap by reusing 2 year old signage and if you are going to be cheap, stop being lazy and update the time months in advance.

Way below average. I think the pizza is so overrated and was under cooked. Had no flavor and the staff is rude and not attentive. Would NEVER go back

3000 miles to pizza hell. I consider myself a great lover of New York style pizza.

Growing up in New Jersey, I've been fortunate enough to have enjoyed great pies from many different places. I've lived most of my adult years in San Diego, and even there, I've found some pies worthy of thin-crust note. While on vacation in Jersey, I flew my girlfriend out to help me sample some prime examples of different North Eastern Cuisines. I chose Patsy's in East Harlem because it was featured on the TV show Pizza Challenge: New York vs. Chicago.

Well, after we sat down we began with the fried zuchinni appetizer. It arrived with a marinara dipping sauce. This sauce was thin, almost watery with a slight metallic flavoring. We then ordered a pepperoni pizza, only to be told that they didn't have any pepperoni! Our jaws dropped to the floor. I glanced at my watch and read 1:25 PM! What? Are you kidding me? The waitress wasn't unfortunately. We ordered a sausage pie and continued to gnaw on the zuchinni and then it hit me: I hope they don't use this tasteless marinara sauce on the pizza! Voila, it arrives and guess what: It was smaller than your average N.Y. style pie, probably 14", the slices were soggy, the cheese was sparcely applied and there it was: The marinara sauce. The same sauce used with the appetizer. We even asked for ranch dressing as an alternative for the "appe" only to be told that they didn't have any. I haven't been this disappointed in anything since the Mets lost to the Cardinals in the playoffs of 2006. As we left, we saw and heard the owner of the place yelling and screaming at someone out on the sidewalk. He must have had one of his restaurant's pizzas!

The perfect pizza-nothing better. I haved lived a life devoted to finding the best pizza...it has always been my favorite food...there are a lot of great pizzas but patsys is the best...and nothing is close...I drag everyone up to harlem...everybody has agreed with me....the person who said it was terrible must be the owner of a competitor...nobody I know has thought anything other than great things aftert having a slice...
