Lotus Salon Tribeca, very dissapointing experience... – Having moved from UK to US a few years ago i had been on the hunt for my 'go to' hair salon for a while when i stumbled across Lotus Tribeca and was initially really pleased.
It is VERY expensive and my friends could never believe how much i paid to get my hair cut & colored but the fact that it was so convenient (i love a block away) and the stylists were so friendly kept me coming back to spend a small fortune every couple of months.
My fourth and final trip there, however has been disastrous and i had to write to warn others of my experience: I have shoulder length, very dark hair and went down to see Selda, one of the stylists, last Saturday armed with a picture of Alexa Chung - chin length brown hair with lighter ends/ tips. She asked if i wanted partial or a full head of highlights to which i replied that i wanted it natural and to look like the photo. Selda seemed so happy with the process and was excited to show me the finished result and i'm not sure if it's the lighting or the way she styled my hair but it looked ok in the salon. I was a bit concerned about the color - dark at the top (I have very dark hair!) and really blond from just above my ear down but having skipped breakfast, been in the salon for over 3hrs and not offered anything to eat/ drink i was eager to to grab a bite to eat. As soon as i got home i panicked that i'd made a mistake - that i had just spent well over $300 to give myself really bad roots & blond hair and when i got to work on Monday my friends all agreed so i called Selda.
She said to try getting used to it as it was a big change but i said that the contrast between the top & bottom was just too much. I couldn't bear to look at myself in the mirror at this point - the color did not suit my skin tone or eye brows but i tried to live with it for the rest of the day and called again later to say i definitely needed to come back in. She said i would have to pay again - the full amount - and that I should plan to spend another three hours there. My friends were amazed that she hadn't offered to fix it for free or at least a reduced rate. I rationaled that i had asked for darker at the top and lighter at the ends but my friends said that i HAD to get it fixed and suddenly everyone was offering up their colorists numbers! Since i am also moving back to London next month i also figured that the reason she was charging me again was that she didn't need to worry about my coming back so why not charge me?
Well, thankfully i took up my friends offer and went to see her colorist, Shannon @ Pimps & Pinnups in E.Village. OMG - she was AMAZING! She only charged me a fraction of the price i paid at Lotus (literally less a quarter of the price) to cut and color my hair and couldn't believe what my hair looked like when i arrived. She agreed that the cut was awful and the color was badly executed and the wrong shade. I now LOVE my hair and cut.
I wouldn't go back to Lotus even if i was still living here. Everyone i have spoken to, including other hairdressers have been amazed that they wouldn't want to fix my problem without charging. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so ridiculously expensive.
In my opinion this salon is over priced & overrated.
P.S. not sure what makes this salon gourmet and would love to know - I have also never seen any models or actresses in there.
Look no further – I just found this quaint space on Reade St. Matthew gave me a wonderful cut and style...I'll be back for color soon!
Ladies, if you have curly hair, go to Selda at Lotus Salon – I've been to Selda twice now and she's done a fantastic job both times. I have thick, curly hair and needless to say, I've had my share of bad haircuts. Selda took the time to see how my hair curls differently at the front, back, and top of my head and then she cut my hair dry. The end result was nice, even layers when I washed my hair and let it dry naturally. The second time I asked her for something more fun (I trusted her more) and I loved the results even more. The cut looks great both straight and curly and it's growing out nicely. A lot of stylists think you can cut curly hair the same as straight hair (wrong!!) but Selda knows better.
My Fabulous hair – Hello Everyone,
After all the compliments I've gotten recently on my hair, I thought it was only fair to shoot one out in return.. I've had my hair done a few times now by Selda, but she doesn't cease to amaze me. The cut she gave me looked great when I left the salon, but what really amazed me was how it grew out in a way that still looked beautiful weeks later. She worked as a stylist in Madrid for many years so maybe that has something to do with it...
More Love for Michele – Michele did my hair about five years ago now at her former salon...Five years later and she's the only stylist I ever go to. I'd follow her anywhere. I get compliments on my hair all the time and I send people to her immediately. Many of them are now loyal fans as well. She pays attention to my wants and to my personal style and always makes me feel renewed. I had to let everyone know how amazing she is. I can't recommend her enough. You're gonna love the way you look :)
Color, Color, Color! – Well I read all these reviews and thought I had better try it out. I am very conscious of doing my hair at a new salon but my hairdresser of 3 years left for greener pastures so I was left with having to find a new one (I have tried a number of places but none made the cut).
I didnt really know who to see at the salon when i made the booking but was told that Bronnie would be free at the time I needed so I went for it. Let me tell you - she is the BEST. As I mentioned previously I was very worried prior to getting there and actually told Bronnie of my recent past experiences, she told me that it was not unusual not to trust a new person to do their hair and told me that she would work with me through the whole process to keep me at ease.
As it turned out I had nothing to worry about. The final results were OUTSTANDING. I have found my new hairdresser!
Natural looking highlights – No more trekking uptown for me. Since I've moved closer to my job from my previous apt on the UES, I've been searching for a place near City Hall that can give me blond highlights as good as I'd been getting. A friend of mine recommended Selda at Lotus Salon and I totally loved what she did! As a bonus, the place has a relaxing vibe. On the downside, they don't do manicures so I've got to go somewhere else for that.
Excellent hair Stylist – I have been living in New York 3 years now and I have been in so many salons looking for the perfect place, but didn't have any luck. I moved to Tribeca a while ago and finally found a great place to take care of my long hair. I found Selda here at Reade St. and she is a amazing hair stylist.
I love her blowouts. She knows how to manage the brush and can do any style I want. Perfectly straight hair or wavy, kind of bouncy and natural. Since she has been taking care of my hair, it looks shiny and healthy. She is very professional and always has a smile and treats clients in a positive way. She did my color recently and it was perfect.
Its so good to be with someone who knows what she is doing. She advises me how to maintain my hair... when to do a deep conditioner or tells me when to have a hair cut, etc.
For busy people like we all are, I think she is the perfect one to tell you when or what your hair needs. Now, I completely trust her with my hair and I love that great finish and smooth silky look after every time I go there. Everyone there is so nice and the prices are very reasonable.
Absolutely recommend this place and of course ask for Selda!
LOVE Lotus Salon! – I haven't had my hair touched by a stylist in YEARS but it really needed coloring and styling. A friend of mine told me about Michele at the No. Moore Lotus Salon and how great she was so figured I'd give it a shot. Well, my hair looks fantastic! She matched the color perfectly and my hair has never felt better! She also made me feel very comfortable and relaxed about the experience. The salon itself is really artistic and beautiful. I definitely plan on going back again and will recommend Michele to my friends!
Awesome blowouts – I got a blowout from Selda and it was amazing. It lasted for more than 3 days! I haven't had a lot of luck with getting good blowouts at other NYC salons so I'm sticking around. I think she uses some kind of European technique that emphasizes the use of the brush and dryer. She was also surprisingly fast.
