Mzia is my new best friend – After getting my hair cut (Leonard) and highlighted (Laurie) at OC61, I decided to have also do some waxing in the spa area. I had my eyebrows shaped which look the best they have ever looked, and a brazilian, and while I was apprehensive for that, Mzia put me right at ease. And I could not be more happy with the results! I booked another appt with her for a touch up and a facial as well. Well, the difference in my skin is amazing. It looks so radiant and healthy. Mzia is so attentive, honest about your needs, and totally knows her stuff. She specializes in deep pore cleansing and it shows. There was zero pressure to buy products and i felt so relaxed and comfortable the whole time. The whole place is just really relaxing and the experience is so positive. It is a great little luxury find in the city. The prices are a little on the high side, but I think I am hooked!!!
Great People, Great Talent, and Just Really, Really Nice!!!! – I LOVE this place! Laurie did my blond highlights and they turned out amazing! She totally listened to what I wanted, talked me out of doing something I would have hated, and the color manages to both look natural and have a lot of spark. I am so happy with the results! My hair was very drab and needed a major color correction from past jobs gone bad. She is sooo nice. The whole place. Very good energy and vibe, none of that snotty attitude from other upscale salons. Leonard cut my hair and I love that too. Again, he LISTENED to what I like and don't like, and gave me exactly what I wanted. None of this walking out with layers or pieces too short to ever pull back type of thing that causes you to cry for days after a haircut. The prices - yes - it's pretty expensive. Yikes. But, I think it is "reasonable" when compared to the cost of other top salons in the city. Highlight prices were expensive, but also somewhat standard to what I have paid at other salons in the city, except at the cheap salons I've been going lately. And let me tell you, it is those cheap salons that completely ruined my color and it's never been right since. This is the first time I have walked out of a salon happy in about 5 years in this city. And given how nice and positive everyone was, I'm sure I'll go back!
Melissa is great! – Melissa has been my colorist for 3 1/2 years! She is sweet, talented, and knowledgeable! She was a colorist at John Frieda forever and recently became the Color Director at OC61. I came in after having had every color in my hair -- she did a color correction and gave me a great base color and added a full head of blonde highlights! I have dark brown hair and she had no trouble making me a blonde. I also have very curly, thick, and long hair -- but she approached it with no hesitation and perfected it! She is great!!! I recommend her and this salon highly! She doesnt push products on you and actually advises you on whats good and affordable in the market. You can even bring her a photo and she'll make you look just like it!
Melissa For All Your Color Needs – If you have any color needs--whether you want to be a redhead or just want some subtle highlights--Melissa is the person to see. I decided to go red for a change of pace this past Fall. My natural color is dark brown, but Melissa worked her magic. I've literally been stopped on the street with compliments on my "lovely hair color." I recently started a new job as a redhead and was signing Melissa's praises (someone had asked where to go for color). One of my co-workers was shocked to learn I'm not a natural redhead! It may sound vain that I'm going on and on about my fabulous color, but the compliments are all for Melissa's great work.
IF YOU CRAVE BLONDE... – IF YOU CRAVE BLONDE Laurie Daniel is an amazing colorist at OC61! I have been her client for three years and have referred my closest friends to her. I often have strangers approach me and comment on my color. I have seen her work wonders with all color variations, but this girl does blonde like no other. I have naturally black hair and she has morphed my tresses into gorgeous golden blonde WITH NO BREAKAGE WHATSOEVER. My hair is in great condition and is long down to my lower back. There is great depth and detail to the color and variety so that its not one dimensional and dated. She is also as sweet as honey and super professional with none of that high-end hair salon attitude that usual comes with quality of this type.
Worth every penny! – OC61 is a very relaxing, beautiful and unpretentious place. I found Louise (the founder) of this amazing place about 1 1/2 years ago. She was at Adir, but recently opened her own salon/spa and staffed it with the people of her own choosing. She has able to bring out the waves in my Asian hair in the most beautiful cuts. And somehow her cuts find volume that I never thought I had and accents my waves beautifully. I have difficult to cut hair and Louise makes my hair look more beautiful than I ever thought possible. She is a genious! I also have to mention Milo (who, like Louise, was trained by Oribe), here, who stepped in for Louise when she was away for a while. He listened to me and created EXACTLY what I wanted. Both he and Louise are amazing talents who are worth every penny! HIGHLY recommended.
My prayers have been answered... – I have been looking for a hairstylist for a few years. A friend recommended Louise at OC61 and I am so glad I found her! Her fingers and eye are magic! She makes my hair look so pretty - and I have difficult, wavy, straight hair. Louise's styles are about a feeling, as well as a look. I HIGHLY recommend her and her top notch staff.
I am updating my review after having gone to another hair stylist that was highly recommended to me and is listed as "one of the best" in NYC on a number of lists. He was $150 and I have to tell you, it was HORRIBLE!! Not a single friend or family member would mentioned that I had my below shoulder length hair cut into a chin length "style". That says a lot!
After letting it grow for 3 1/2 months, I ran back to Louise, who did the best she could, as it was so chopped into, but I've had nothing but compliments! I think everyone is relieved! (In the previous version of my review, I noted that the "Con" was "pricy-ness" comment... I realize that Louise and her staff are well within the normal rate for haircuts in NYC. But are exceptional in talent.) I HIGHLY recommend her!
I've learned my lesson: Don't be penny wise and pound foolish.
