ambiance
83.33000183105469% positive
  1. from the moment you walk into the salon the friendly staff and chic atmosphere gives it the feel of a soho salon.
  2. but regardless, this salon is a great place to escape the typical scary salon "holier than thou" atmosphere so common in NYC.
  3. It's really close to my work, so the location is convenient.
  4. Salons should be a comfortable, welcoming and relaxing experience.
  5. Spa services are reasonable and comfortable.
  6. think this Scott J. location is awful, and I would certainly not get another cut with Paula.

  1. You can have great CHines food at Ollies on the block after your visit to Aveda here at 114th Street.
  2. The tea was also delicious and I thought the front desk staff was very nice.
  3. bridget also suggested some amazing product to help my normally thin hair look volumious and kept the color fresh for way longer than it normally lasts.

  1. No nasty surprises just great hair and professional cordial service.
  2. Finally, the front desk staff isn't so great.
  3. The service is horrible.
  4. The assistants who wash hair are rude, and they all smelled strongly of smoke.
  5. Great talent, great customer service, the best the Upper West Side has got to offer.

Be careful

by HudsonGirl

I've had good haircuts, but be careful who you choose for what type of cut. Allysa is fantastic. Krystal butchered my hair. Both are 'junior' stylists.

A is for Awesome & Alyssa!

by Ali H Mirza

After a longish day at work last week, I wasn't entirely looking forward to getting a hair cut. I'm just a guy who wished it were something I could delegate. Put it this way: I let my hair grow far too long before even thinking about taking care of it.

This is changing thanks to Alyssa! While I'm accustomed to assistants washing my hair and massaging my neck, Alyssa did the whole thing herself and it definitely relaxed me. More importantly, she took the time to understand what I needed and was very clear with what she was doing. Needless to say I was incredibly impressed with her skill. I have extremely curly/frizzy hair that is damn near impossible to manage; I appreciate having sat with Alyssa who is obviously a brilliant talent. For a decade (whoa, I've gone to salons since I was 14!) I've either settled on a look that didn't feel right or got the hair cut that could only survive a week before needing a fixer-upper. Not anymore. I'm delighted to have already booked my next appointment with Alyssa (first time I've EVER scheduled an appointment on my way out of the salon).

One last thing: Alyssa's also the sweetest person. Talking with her made ignoring my blackberry buzzing every two minutes a breeze.

Alissa - Best Haircut I've Gotten!

by LizzieG

I went to Scott J recommended by two friends to see Alissa. She was wonderful, took her time and did a really thorough and beautiful job with my long hair. I could tell she really knows what she's doing and the proof is in my cut! She was friendly and receptive to my idea and gave me exactly what I was hoping for and more. I would highly recommend her and the salon!

  • Pros: wonderful service, excellent cut

Briget is the women to see!!!

by meghanjk

Called for a last minute appointment and was able to see BRIDGET, best luck of my life. She was so funny and sweet. She matched my highlights perfectly and gave me a great easy cut. She also was honest and talked me out of some horrible bangs. THANK YOU!! I felt very taken care of due to the fact she didn't pass me off to anyone, instead doing everything for me herself!! I highly recommend her and will be seeing her again very soon!!! Bridget is the women to see!!!

  • Pros: great color, delicious tea
  • Cons: Assistants, Stupid front desk girl with glasses

ALYSSA US THE BEST COLORIST EVER!

by moxyfoxy

I stumbled upon ALYSSA at this salon and she is the BEST. I am a retired high end hairstylist from Bergdof Goodman in the 70's and I know a great colorist as I was trained at BG. I have been to a ton of 57th Street shops for the past 30 years and she is the best. NO MORE 57th Street attitude anymore. I have gone to Tricomi, Cutler Salon, Licari, Pierre Michel etc and always come out miserable and crying and have spent hundreds. I have gone to ALYSSA now four times and each time she has been consistently fabulous. I am a natural blonde and at the Cutler Salon went red. Cutler Salon said it was too hard to go back to blonde. ALYSSA got me back one time and its stunning. The products are all natural and I AM SO THRILLED TO BE A BLONDE AGAIN!!!!! SHe is warm, engaging and a great listener. She also did dynamite hi-lights on my 86 year old MOM who looks and feels great.... DO NOT be lazy and head on to 114th street and Broadway and ask for ALyssa. Call first and make appt. I am SOOO THRILLED. You also get a hand masage while the color is processing. NO FANCY SCHMANCY salons anymore. WHy should I pay for their attitude and location? Today is THanksgiving and I just flatironed my hair and it looks great... She cut almost four inches off and and the cut and blowout were also great..... WHy shelp to salons and be so unhappy...... You can have great CHines food at Ollies on the block after your visit to Aveda here at 114th Street. I know it sounds like I have stock in the COmpany.. Hardly... I am an out of work gal but I just wanted to share my good news with my fellow NYC friends who do NOT want to break the bank and want a great LOOK.... They also do great men....So GOod luck and tell her RObin sent you!!! Tall RObin from the UES!!!!!!!!

  • Pros: FABULOUS HILIGHTS AND HAIRCUT
