“think this Scott J. location is awful, and I would certainly not get another cut with Paula.”
“just moved to the city and didn't know where to find a good salon, stumbled upon aveda while grabbing some coffee downstairs, was placed with a "new talent" stylist named Bridget.”
“You can have great CHines food at Ollies on the block after your visit to Aveda here at 114th Street.”
“but regardless, this salon is a great place to escape the typical scary salon "holier than thou" atmosphere so common in NYC.”
“Finally, the front desk staff isn't so great.”
“Great price as well and the salon offers discounts for professionals in the area!”
Be careful. I've had good haircuts, but be careful who you choose for what type of cut. Allysa is fantastic. Krystal butchered my hair. Both are 'junior' stylists.
A is for Awesome & Alyssa!.
After a longish day at work last week, I wasn't entirely looking forward to getting a hair cut. I'm just a guy who wished it were something I could delegate. Put it this way: I let my hair grow far too long before even thinking about taking care of it.
This is changing thanks to Alyssa! While I'm accustomed to assistants washing my hair and massaging my neck, Alyssa did the whole thing herself and it definitely relaxed me. More importantly, she took the time to understand what I needed and was very clear with what she was doing. Needless to say I was incredibly impressed with her skill. I have extremely curly/frizzy hair that is damn near impossible to manage; I appreciate having sat with Alyssa who is obviously a brilliant talent. For a decade (whoa, I've gone to salons since I was 14!) I've either settled on a look that didn't feel right or got the hair cut that could only survive a week before needing a fixer-upper. Not anymore. I'm delighted to have already booked my next appointment with Alyssa (first time I've EVER scheduled an appointment on my way out of the salon).
One last thing: Alyssa's also the sweetest person. Talking with her made ignoring my blackberry buzzing every two minutes a breeze.
Alissa - Best Haircut I've Gotten!. I went to Scott J recommended by two friends to see Alissa. She was wonderful, took her time and did a really thorough and beautiful job with my long hair. I could tell she really knows what she's doing and the proof is in my cut! She was friendly and receptive to my idea and gave me exactly what I was hoping for and more. I would highly recommend her and the salon!
Briget is the women to see!!!. Called for a last minute appointment and was able to see BRIDGET, best luck of my life. She was so funny and sweet. She matched my highlights perfectly and gave me a great easy cut. She also was honest and talked me out of some horrible bangs. THANK YOU!! I felt very taken care of due to the fact she didn't pass me off to anyone, instead doing everything for me herself!! I highly recommend her and will be seeing her again very soon!!! Bridget is the women to see!!!
ALYSSA US THE BEST COLORIST EVER!. I stumbled upon ALYSSA at this salon and she is the BEST. I am a retired high end hairstylist from Bergdof Goodman in the 70's and I know a great colorist as I was trained at BG. I have been to a ton of 57th Street shops for the past 30 years and she is the best. NO MORE 57th Street attitude anymore. I have gone to Tricomi, Cutler Salon, Licari, Pierre Michel etc and always come out miserable and crying and have spent hundreds. I have gone to ALYSSA now four times and each time she has been consistently fabulous. I am a natural blonde and at the Cutler Salon went red. Cutler Salon said it was too hard to go back to blonde. ALYSSA got me back one time and its stunning. The products are all natural and I AM SO THRILLED TO BE A BLONDE AGAIN!!!!! SHe is warm, engaging and a great listener. She also did dynamite hi-lights on my 86 year old MOM who looks and feels great.... DO NOT be lazy and head on to 114th street and Broadway and ask for ALyssa. Call first and make appt. I am SOOO THRILLED. You also get a hand masage while the color is processing. NO FANCY SCHMANCY salons anymore. WHy should I pay for their attitude and location? Today is THanksgiving and I just flatironed my hair and it looks great... She cut almost four inches off and and the cut and blowout were also great..... WHy shelp to salons and be so unhappy...... You can have great CHines food at Ollies on the block after your visit to Aveda here at 114th Street. I know it sounds like I have stock in the COmpany.. Hardly... I am an out of work gal but I just wanted to share my good news with my fellow NYC friends who do NOT want to break the bank and want a great LOOK.... They also do great men....So GOod luck and tell her RObin sent you!!! Tall RObin from the UES!!!!!!!!
LORIN is the best!.
Lorin cut my hair and she was absolutely amazing.
Note: Lorin is now working at Jeunesse Salon on 62nd and Broadway.
Amazing Haircut!. This place is great! I showed up there because I live in the neighborhood, and was expecting an OK cut. Marci was AWESOME!!! She did exactly what I wanted, and when she wanted to take creative license she asked me first- and I'm so glad I trusted her instincts!! I have lived in NYC for 3 years and this is the best haircut I've gotten!! And for cheaper than I was quoted from their website!!
LORIN is the best!.
Usually I get my hair cut at the Aveda Lifestyle salon in Berlin (Germany), however, as I had to move to New York for several months, I was looking for a new stylist. I have Asian hair, i.e. very thick, heavy and straight. I also have a full bangs, which I really liked but which also gave me some trouble as it used to part in the middle and letting me look like a little child.
By coincidence I went to the Broadway salon to get a bangs trim and was so intrigued with Lorin's suggestion that I immediately got an appointment for the same day. It turned out to be a great experience! She cut my hair dry after using the iron to straighten it in order to cut it more precisely. My hair looks great and is just the way I like it: feeling like a full mane, yet not too heavy and straight (she cut layers to take the weight out of it).
Lorin, you're the best!
Bridget's the Best. Was recommended to bridget by a fellow male co-worker, She was so cheerful when i first met her i knew it would be great! I have insanely curly hair and always have trouble managing it! After a few suggestion from bridget about the length and some layers, i got a wonderful shampoo from her assistant! Not only did she give me a wonderful and manageable cut, she showed me a couple easy styling tips! Not to mention a great curly conditioning balm/gel. She even offered a complimentary makeup cleanup since she had some extra time!!!! I was completely blown away by how wonderful everything was! I will 100% be going back to bridget!
I've had a lot of success at Aveda salons in the past, so I tried this one out to find a stylist I liked. It's really close to my work, so the location is convenient. However, after three failed attempts of a good haircut and service here, I'm never going back. The service is horrible.
I first went in for a bangs trim. When I came in, they charged me more than it listed on the website. When I pointed that out, the receptionist simply said, "Sorry. This is the price."
I went in for a full haircut a few months ago. I have very straight, easy-to-cut hair. It's probably the hardest thing to mess up, because I'm pretty low maintenance about it. She cut my layers really choppy and didn't blend them. She also cut my hair with a middle part, even though I told her that I part it on the side. She told me, "I find that I get a more even cut this way." That didn't make sense at all, because when she parted it to the side at the end, one side was significantly shorter than the other. I had to go to another salon to get them to fix it, and the guy asked me what was wrong with my uneven, choppy layers.
I went back a third time because I was in a time crunch and needed a bangs trim desperately. I called to see when would be a good time to come in. The lady on the phone told me that a certain stylist could see me at 5:30. I left work early to get to the salon on time and when I got there, the receptionists told me that they don't make appointments for bangs trims and they don't know why someone would have told me to come in at a specific time to see a specific person. I argued with they ended up getting me in after about 10 minutes, but they were so rude about it, that I would not recommend anyone to go there.
Salons should be a comfortable, welcoming and relaxing experience. Scott J is not the place to go.
