What People Are Saying About Cheeks Bakery

In Short
Opened in 2005 and named for its pastry chef's childhood nickname, Cheeks is a loveable little Brooklyn bakeshop. Pink accents abound here as everything--from the take away boxes to the ribbon-tied, cellophane wrapped snacks--seem frosted in the baby girl hue. A vast, rotating (and seasonal) menu keeps things cooking for guests of either sex, though. Thick (9-inches!) breakfast quiche, quickbreads, brownies, seasonal pies and tarts, specialty cupcakes, and luscious birthday cakes cover the baking bases. The fact that they make all their dishes with organic and locally grown produce only serves to sweeten the deal. (Photo courtesy: cakespy.com)

So I looked online for a bakery near my job so that I could get a dozen copcakes for a coworker's retirement. I came across reviews for Cheek's which said how rude the service was, but I read other reviews which said how AWSOMELY GOOD the cupcakes are. I thought the service can't possibly be that bad! Oh I was sooooo wrong. Its actually comical because it is so bad, it is almost unbelieveable. I walked in and the woman behind the counter looked at me like I was not supposed to be there. Then she ignored me and walked AWAY!!! I waited for service and when she finally came out she was the biggest grump in the world!! She was annoyed that I wanted them in a box (I have no idea what my other option would be). She didn't say "can I help you?". Instead she just stared at me. There was no "thank you" or smiles or "have a good day". The cupcakes truly were very good though. So, if you can stand the rudeness without getting insulted, it is worth it. Otherwise, do not go!

I just had a conversation with a friend where we talked about the worst food service we've ever encountered in New York. For me, it was Cheeks. The bakery owner is, as others have pointed out, unbelievably rude. I dealt with it for a while because I wanted to support a small local bakery. But then one day I went in and experienced the last straw. I was buying a piece of cake and wanted it to go. The person at the counter had offered to put it in a box for me. On my way out the door, the owner came out from the back where she lurks and shouted, "Why can't you just eat your cake in here? We can't afford wasting boxes." After I gave her a look of disbelief, she snarled, "Don't look at me that way." Pretty much the harshest buzz I've ever gotten in a bakery. The cake was sweet, but not sweet enough. I'm never going back.

Now, I'm not one to write bad reviews. Except I have to for this place...just have to warn everyone! I can handle a not very friendly person or moody etc but WOW...lol this individual is just down right unpleasant. I'm at a loss for words altogether. There pastries are good but honestly I don't want to give my money to a store that doesn't appreciate my business. So no matter how good the treat, there are a million bakeries around WillyBurg....sorry I hope your attitude improves!
