“Very unique atmosphere”
“It was no where close to authentic pizza, not even close to the average pie in italy let alone some of the world's best places we enjoyed.”
“If you are out for a serious and delicious date, with fab wine and even more delicious food, visit this wine bar - we had the cheese and cured meat plate which comes with a unique toasted bread, almost like a large pita, and also a delish pizza.”
“the endive salad is AMAZING.”
“Combined with the music selection, the place really gave off an authentic Italian vibe.”
“This is our favorite neighborhood restaurant.”
“The maitre d' and the hostess are extremely nice.”
“The food from the wood burning over was crispy and delicious and the wine selection was huge.”
“Service was lazy and uncaring even for a slow friday night.”
Great Place. I was surprised to find a well-priced place on the upper east side that offers live music with no cover! I think it's just a food/drink minimum. The host was very friendly and suggested a table with the best view of the show. Unfortunately, my boyfriend and I had to be somewhere before the show would start, so we had to leave as the musicians were arriving. We'll be sure to come back again and stay for the show! The food was good and simple, like real Italian food should be. I had the lasagna, and my boyfriend had the spaghetti and meatballs. The meatballs were the perfect size and had good flavor and texture. I'll have to try the pizza next time. Maybe some of the reviewers just don't like authentic Italian pizza? In Napoli, you have to eat pizza with a knife and fork because the dough is soft in the middle. The wine by the glass was also excellent, and not overpriced.
Good for drinks or dessert.
This place always seems to pick up more in the summer since it has great outdoor seating. Its very lovely here in that the staff is so sweet and the ambiance inside is romantic. The food, however, is just ok. Their pizzas are not that great. Oddly, its cheaper to get glasses of wine here than it is to get a bottle.
But I do love their pappardelle with ragu. Its hearty and a nice size to split. The night I went they had a special salad with avocado and artichokes that was fresh and delicious. Their normal pizzas I've had in the past are just not appetizing and always seem a tad undercooked. But the star of the show is their nutella pizza for dessert. You can get it alone or with gelato in it and it is just decadence at its best. The bartender who waited on us was lovely. In that neighborhood there are too many other Italian restos and wine bars to compete with, but its a cute stop for a drink or dessert.
Very unique atmosphere. Granted, I haven't been there for a while because I moved to another part of Manhattan but the first time I went there simply for a glass of wine at the bar I was hooked. Ok it had something to do with the beautiful young blonde woman tending bar that night. Down guys. She and her husband are part owners. The owners are actually from Italy. The pizza is unique, baked in a brick oven in clear view of the patrons. Cicchio made the pizza with pride and it was excellent. He once took a 2 month vacation to visit home in Italy and the person the owners brought over from Italy to fill in was not only as good in making pizza but finished second in the international pizza throwing contest which is like pizza dough gymnastics. I couldn't believe my eyes when I first watched him. It was Cirque du Soleil meets pizza. There is a wide variety of pizzas on the menu while the bulk of the menu consists of classical Italian dishes that are very tasty and you'll be full when you leave for sure. The ingredients seem to be of high quality. The calamari is excellent btw but here is the icing on the cake. When I first started going there the bartender was a very bright and charming young man named Bruno. As Italian songs played over the sound system Cicchio and Bruno often broke out into song themselves and they both had good voices. I quickly became a regular and was treated like family by the owners and the staff. The owners are a combination of professionalism and real Italian warmth. They've been in the restaurant business for decades. They are very attentive to customers but never overbearing. Granted I was a regular but when the owners, one of the waiters and one of the waitresses told me I was like family there, I knew already they meant it but even if you're a first time patron or an occasional patron it is a truly unique experience and if you ask for one of the owners they are more than happy to come to your table and get to know you. The unique Italian style and flair make it a place well worth checking out and it's nice to be met with a warm Bon Journo as you enter. I've brought friends there who quickly became regulars but the true test...Italians dine there. I look for Japanese restaurants that have Japanese patrons. Speaks volumes.
why go here when there are so many better options?.
The scene: noon, a beautiful sunny Sunday. My girlfriend and I are looking for a nice place to have a quick brunch in the neighborhood. We wanted to sit outside in the sun and have a bite to eat.
Though it was just the two of us, we asked to be seated at a four-seat table (one of 3 such tables), because that was the only one not in the shade. Mind you, only one other table in the whole restaurant had customers. Our request was declined (“we are saving it for parties of 4”) so we had to sit at a small table for two. (Can you guess if the table that we requested ever got any customers? No, it did not. In fact, during our entire stay only one other couple came to the restaurant - remember, this was 12pm on a nice, sunny weekend day).
Our entrees took a long time to come, so long that we had to either starve or order an appetizer. The appetizer it was, but it took so long that it arrived after our entrees had been finally delivered.
In sum, the food was mediocre, nothing special about it. In fact, certain ingredients were missing from my girlfriend's salad, and my omelet had miniscule quantities of ingredients.
The service was average at best. And they take “American Express exclusively” – read: they take no other credit cards.
In retrospect, our clue not to eat here should have been only one table with seated customers, where all the other nearby places had tons of customers enjoying Sunday brunch. Frankly, I would rather starve than go back here again. They should have been happy to get our business, but instead they made us regret spending our money at their restaurant.
The only redeeming part of the whole experience was our server (a younger guy with black beard) who tried to be nice and helpful.
Pathetic. I got a pizza delivered from this place, so maybe delivery just isn't their thing and my review is unfair, but wow. Just a really terrible pizza in every way imaginable. Charred crust and extremely salty taste. It just tasted like they cheap ingredients, I don't know any other way to say it. To their credit, they were the only pizzeria open past 11 pm on a Sunday on the UES (that situation deserves it's own scathing review). But next time I will just go to the bodega and get a frozen pizza or eat Fruit Loops.
...the food is not good. Here's the true scoop. Its a nice date place, only order the pizza, don' t stray. But even then, lower your expectations, its not that good either. The maitre d' and the hostess are extremely nice. They do know how to take care of thier patrons, just not how to serve good food or what's considered good in NYC. The waitservice was odd, in fact, while I still had food in my mouth, they came and took the plate. Slow down guys. I've been to Italy, this place is not like Italy. The prior review about someone who likes to go out in groups twice a month, first, I don't believe that, if you went out twice a month, in a group, why would you possibly go there that often. I believe this place makes their money on groups, hence why that review was written. Overall, go once, and see for yourself.....
Perfect Atmosphere, Amazing Pizza. My friends and I like to go out for group dinners at least twice a month. Our favorite place by far is Oh Mammamia! We originally wanted to try a new restaurant each time, but we seem to always find ourselves back at Oh Mammamia. The atmosphere is fun, exciting, and great for groups. The service is quick and friendly. We love the true Italian feeling of the place. The pizza is our favorite but they also have other Italian dishes. Can't wait to go back!
Authentic Tasting Pizza. I travel to Rome once a year to visit family. I have experienced eating in many different restaurants over the years. The first time I ate at Mammamia, I was absolutely delighted that I had finally found such wonderful, authentic tasting pizza. There is such an inviting atmosphere with Italian music playing in the background that you just want to sit and enjoy. I have taken family members and friends who have complimented on the pasta dishes, salads and wine. If you like a little entertainment while you eat, try a Friday night, it's fun.
Great Time, Great Atmosphere, Great Food, Just Great. A friend recomended that I go check out Mamma Mia. When i first arrived, the place was packed. At first i was nervous that i might have to wait a while, or maybe not even get a seat. I was WRONG! The polite staff quickly greated me and got me a nice cozy table. After sitting down I couldnt help but notice the really cool deco of the resturant. Combined with the music selection, the place really gave off an authentic Italian vibe. Me and my wife were very pleased with the wine selection and then proceded to order our food. For me a pizza, and for her pasta. Both items arrived fast and well prepared. After the first bite of pizza i was sold. Mamma Mia has won a new customer. My wife was also pleased with her dish. We have already recomended this place to other friends. If you are thinking about visiting Mamma Mia, dont hesitate, you will enjoy.
Fantastic and Friendly. Have lived on the UES for a long time and was lucky enough to pick up a takeout menu from Oh Mammamia recently. Have ordered in 2x (prompt service, hot food) and have been to the restaurant 2x in a week. The service was extremely friendly, the food was authentic and delicious and the wine was wonderful. They were extremely child friendly and gave each of our kids a pizza dough to flatten out and shape however they liked and then put it in the pizza over and returned to them their own little pizzas!! Just an overall fantastic place!!
