Gourmet Turkish Cuisine in an Intimate Setting

What Our Expert Scouts Say

June 11, 2013

Is it an unwritten rule that all wine bars have the best names ever? If you think the name is good, try hanging out here for a few hours. this small, cozy wine den has everything to offer and then some. Try their assorted cheese plate with a nice bottle of French Bordeaux. My mouth is watering as I type.

I didnt see any frogs but there were plenty of turks. Food was amazing, not the biggest eater of Turkish cuisine, but the food here was un-real. Maybe the best hummus i ever had. The phyllo dough with Feta and the grilled calamari were also amazing. The waiter recommended an excellent red wine to complement our meal. For the main course we had swordfish skewers and i had the lamb in tomato sauce over eggplant puree which was again just amazingly tasty, i practically licked the plate clean. For dessert the turkish custard and some cement-like turkish coffee (which is expected), it was good. I would skip dessert here and just drink more wine or order another appetizer. We were seated promptly and couples should go in the front, groups in the back due to noise issues the front is nice and quiet. Highly recommended and we will be back. Best part is you can tell your date you know this little out of the way turkish place you want to take her, then if you're as lucky as me she'll pay. As Borat says, "I Like"

Great decor, great concept, good food. I am disappointed to see the number of "planted" reviews for this restaurant, especially early on. This is a creative approach to a Turkish restaurant and beats the hell out of Turkish Kitchen - the goofy '80s colors there got to go.

The food is good, but it's the same drab stuff the Clinton, NJ revolving door of Turkish "chefs" prepare elsewhere. The creativity of the rest of the place needs to be matched in the kitchen.

Probably the best Turk in Manhattan. The atmosphere is great, the food spectacular, with manti and the swordfish as the stars of the menu. Order a bunch of meze to share and enjoy them while drinking some raki.

No turkey this one!. In a city full of good restaurants, often ruined by snobbish or clueless staff, this one stands out as a warm, friendly, bustling port of call in a somewhat barren and non-descript area best described as Far West Soho. In a room decorated with beautiful Ottoman antiques and artwork you can pick exceptional mezzes (appetizers) from a selection presented by a super-friendly staff or order lip-smacking dishes (especially if you like lamb) from the menu. Wines and cocktails are well above average and the house raki, Turkey's national drink, akin to Greek ouzo or French pastis, is well worth a try. Overall, a purveyor of many-layered pleasures. Very busy on weekend evenings.

A culinary odyssey to Turkey by way of a scenic Tribeca side street.. The Scene
What Osman and Orhan Kakir started with their West Village wine bar, they continue here. The striking space, dressed in cranberry red and sage green, devotes ample room to the bar, but also hosts linen-topped tables and more relaxed seating in back. Service is friendly but suffers from the occasional language barrier.

The Food
Cold appetizers start the menu off strong--both the lebni, a thick yogurt dip brightened with fresh dill, and the acili ezme, a spicy dish of chopped tomatoes and vegetables, are excellent, as is the warm house-made bread. One bite of the freshly fried cigars of feta-stuffed phyllo dough and you'll be content to stop there. But then you'd miss the manti, a classic Central Asian dish of tiny dumplings stuffed with lamb and served with warm yogurt sauce and the enormous platter of grilled lamb chunks presented atop a smokey layer of pureed eggplant. Finish with sweet baklava.

Turkish Gem!. I read a review about this new place and wanted to give it a try...and it far exceeded my expectations! The decor was great, food absolutely delicious (tapas style), waitstaff patient and prompt, and the whole experience was affordable! I definitely recommend it. Great date, spot, too, since they have a full wine bar! A must try. We will be back!
