Best Experience in NYC. I went to Staghorn Steakhouse earlier this week at 4pm while visiting NYC on business. Technically they were closed and didn't start serving dinner until 5pm but the manager took pity on me and let me be seated and opened the kitchen. He even proceeded to wait on me himself and made exceptions to the menu for me. All totaled I had at least four people waiting on me hand and foot. It was the best experience I've had in all my trips to NYC.
VERY RUDE. Three of us went in after around 8:30 for dinner on a Saturday night. The place was empty. That should have been the first clue. We ordered drinks and looked at the menu. Too pricey. We told the waiter we would just be enjoying our drinks. I guess the mgmt didn't like that we weren't spending money as he paced up and down in front of us, glaring, mumbling under his breath, and at one point, I thought he was going to remove the table cloth right out from under us. He didn't, but he did strip the table while we finishing our cocktails. We were the only ones in the place and they're acting like we're putting them out. No surprise to me that nobody else was there and we certainly won't be returning.
Worst experience ever!!!!Stay away!!. Went there friday Febr 4th with 2 other friends, the manager was really annoyed that we had the "ba''lls" to ask him to have a table for 3,the hostess was so rude and so uneducated(Albanian Mgt,Albanian Hostess),she almost threw the menus in our faces. The wait staff was really nice, food not to great, restaurant really beautiful, but i don`t know how in the world the owners don`t see what`s going on in that place! The manager was cursing very loud, the hostess looked like she never had a bath in her life, very very bad experience!!Please stay away from that place, don`t waste your money&your energy,we are treated like garbage with your own money!!!
Avoid. Recently went for a glass of wine with a friend. The barmaid was SO rude we left. Horrible service. We had just paid and she said âI don't know where youy ladies are from but you never gave me a tipâ surely a tip is for good service! No personality so no tip..
Waist of time and money!!! Awful service & food!!!.
Worst service I have ever experienced. Rude and does not care less. Menu is very poor and basic.
Do not go there, even if it is the only place open in the area (which is never the case)...IT IS BAD
Avoid this place. I headed to the Staghorn based on the 4.5 star rating. it must have changed hands recently. The new owners have made it as dead as doornail. I was the ONLY person in the restaurant on a Thursday night at 8 pm. Drinks were $12 each!!! I drank my drink and left before ordering any food -- the owners appear to not understand the NYC market at all. I would avoid this place at all costs.
No Reason To Eat Here.
Went to Staghorn last night for dinner before the Big East tournament. Other than it's proximity to MSG, there really are no redeaming qualities to this place. The proprietors and waitstaff are Eastern European (I think Romanian) trying to operate an American steakhouse. It's not working... First, our waiter definitely had some english problems - had significant difficulty communicating with us - we had no confidence our order would be correct when it arrived at the table. Second, the waiter completely lost interest in us when we decided not to order wine. We were drinking beers, and getting additional rounds was like pulling teeth. You should not have to flag down your waiter to order another drink - they should just be checking on you. Come to think of it, not one time did our waiter stop by to check in on our meal... The food was OK, but at that price-point, I want to be wowed. Just really nothing special about their salad, steak, or fries. Bathroom was pretty aweful - the first time i used it, there was a roll of paper towels on the sink to dry your hands - the second time, they were out of paper towels AND someone had managed to vomit in/around the sink... how does that go unnoticed/uncleaned my management???
I was so taken aback by this place last night that i wrote myself a reminder to write a review this morning... This is the first time I've ever left a review (let alone a negative one)...
Ignore all the positive feedback on this place. The writers are either lying or have never dined at a decent enough restaraunt for comparison purposes. Just stay away from Staghorn. For the money, you can just about eat ANYWHERE else.
Staghorns is my favorite place near MSG. This place is spectacular, they are Romanian, they know fine service. Best porterhouse steak anywhere (sorry Ben Benson) and a reasonable number $$$. Within easy walking distance of the Garden (unless it is raining), and never too crowded to take in a special meal. I always make reservations, but I think you could chance just showing up.
Over-bearing service and unexceptional steak.
We travelled to New York City from England to stay for a week at New Year. When we asked our hotel concierge if they could recommend a lively American steakhouse for the Saturday night, this is where he sent us. When we arrived, we could not see through the window that the restaurant only had one other couple eating, otherwise we may not have gone in. We went in and the lady who greeted us was friendly and professional, we were shown to our table and given menus. We chose to have a steak each and share the side order of mashed potatoes but we were made to feel as if we should have ordered starters too (my fiance was sure he heard the waiter say to te manager "they've only ordered steak"). Shortly after we arrived, the other couple left and one other group of people came in. The restaurant was extremely quiet and had no atmosphere whatsoever. While eating our meal, it felt as if the 3 waiters were circling our table like sharks, always hovering close by to attend to our every need. We found this to be intimidating and irritating. The waiters were all Italian American and would talk amongst themselves in Italian, which just added to the intimidation for us.
When the bill came, though it was our own fault, we did not notice that they had added 20% tip for themselves and paid by card, adding $40 tip in cash. We only noticed the next day when we looked at the receipt, but I feel that not only was it extremely dishonest not to bring it to our attention that the tip had been added into the bill just to be sure we were aware, but very cheeky to add 20% tip when I would have personally paid a minimum of 15% as the service was over-bearing, over-attentive and intimidating.
There were more staff than customers and I could not wait to leave. I could not have been more disappointed with that choice for a Saturday night, and would recommend it perhaps for business dinners but nothing more than that.
Perfect for Special Occasions.
Last week I was hosted by a business associate and we were seated within just a few minutes of our 8 PM reservation time. My host had calamari and lamb chops , and I had onion soup and salmon. I don't think these items could have been better anywhere--spectacular presentation, freshness, and flavors. The restaurant was very busy--even on a Wednesday night.
Our waiter was professional and efficient--superb and attentive service to match the expertly prepared food. Our table for 2 was comfortable and not too noisy considering how busy the place was.
So, Staghorn is appropriate for special occasions and expense account meals. You get what you pay for and when you buy dinner here, you receive quality dining at its best. So, I rate Staghorn 5 stars.
