Build it Green: the DIYer's paradise. BIG's warehouse is huge and you never know what you might find. Dress warmly and enjoy the hunt. I found a great bathroom vanity and sink for under $100. There are lots of standard white tiles that you'd pay a lot more for even from Home Depot, and really good doors. Like the solid wood kind. It isn't that easy to get to via public transportation, but it can be done. They'll hold purchases for 2 weeks (at least) so you can get a zipcar or man with van. And best of all - it supports a great cause, the SolarOne environmental group in NYC.
All time best for new and used building supplies.
One should do no renovation or building without first checking out BIG. It is a do-it-yourselfer's paradise! In doing my own kitchen renovation I bought a full set of very high end cabinets, paint, etc. It has become a weekly need to go and see what new stuff they have received.
Thanks BIG for keeping usable goods out of landfills!
Cheap construction goods. BIG is no misnomer. Huge place, lots of cabinets, doors, lights, appliances, paint, etc. I found a new stove and saw a brand new sub zero fridge there for $4,500. Not much in the way of flooring, but I'll definitely go back.
Save money and the earth by shopping for salvaged and surplus building materials at this nonprofit supply store.. Environmentally minded handymen can head over to this Queens' warehouse, which houses more than 75 tons of material. Doors, flooring, lighting, sinks, cabinets, lumber and other building materials are all for sale, and the materials have either been donated by contractors and building suppliers or salvaged from buildings about to be demolished. As a bonus, all proceeds go to the Community Environmental Center's environmental education programs.
