Editorial Review for Thai Privilege Spa – by Katie Heffernan
In Short
A Thai haven hides on a discrete second floor on Spring Street. The reception room, shimmering with gold paint and gauze drapes, transports guests upon entrance; the scent of mint and orange oils infuses the air. In addition to the art of Thai massage--a mixture of long, kneading strokes, pressure, and stretching--therapists study meditation to achieve optimal focus while performing treatments. The spa's own line of oils and beauty products are used in the masks, scrubs and massages.

Know Before You GoThe lobby's handmade furnishings and intricately painted ceramics come from small Thai villages. To aid their economies, it's all up for sale.

Outfitted like a cheesy thai restaurant. I live by the place so it is convenient for me to go. I went on a Sunday which was the last straw. I thought it was just the masseuse but this is the 2nd lazy massage therapist I got. First they already jip you with washing your feet for 10 minutes which is taken out of your hour and this time the masseuse cut my session short by almost 10 minutes. So I paid for 60 and got 40. Not great when you need to relax. I asked for a discount but there was "no manager in the store." Would not recommend. If you decide to go and you like to get your feet washed go get a pedicure first which is cheaper and tell them to cut out the foot scrub.
Pros: Only Thai classical music place I know of.
Cons: 60 minutes not really 60 minutes.

I was ecstatic when I found Thai Privilege spa. It's a lovely, peaceful place. You receive ginger tea and sandals when you arrive. The therapist washes your feet. And then you are treated to an expert session (I recommend 1 1/2 hours at least). Afterwards more tea, and you leave in total bliss. Thai massage is quite different from other massage forms, as the therapist puts his/her whole body into stretching your muscles, compressing your joints, and opening up the spine. It's also known as "lazy man's yoga," since the results feel similar to those of an intense yoga class. I have found the positive effects of these massages are noticeably present for weeks after. Thai Privilege is definitely worth checking out because the staff is extremely skilled--some or all trained in Thailand. And along with all of the other benefits, you'll feel like you've been transported to another land for a couple of hours.
Pros: Ambience, Skilled staff
