What Our Expert Scouts Say

New York Health & Racquet Club
March 11, 2013

There are two massive palm trees in the middle of this spacious gym, and high-octane hardcore plyometrics classes as well as chill yoga. Being able to run upstairs on the balcony with a view is a highlight. Don't miss the whirlpool.

Excursion-Laden Luxe Gym Great Deal if You Work It. This upscale New York health club–with indoor pools, waterfalled hot tubs, and rooftops–usually flies under the radar when it comes to Manhattan’s posh gym chains, but maybe its members prefer it that way.

With just 10 locations in Manhattan and one in Long Island, New York Health & Racquet Club is a great deal for those who want an added variety–basketball, racquetball, rock walls, boxing rings–at different gyms, but with a familiar feel through its regulars, trainers, and staff.

A great feature about NYHRC is that all 11 of its gyms are open to all members, any time, for no extra cost.

But maybe the real deal breaker is this: deeply discounted member excursions from the company-owned yacht to its partnered golf and beach club, or midtown’s Kimberly Hotel. The monthly gym membership rate varies, almost from person to person as with any gym, depending on what you can finagle from your sales rep. Damage ranges from $70 a month with prepaid two-year plans to $110 a month sans contract.

Cooper Square members tend to be young, educated and serious gym rats given its youthful space in NYU/Cooper Union land. The desk and training staff is always friendly, and locker rooms are stocked with the standard amenities. Cooper’s fresh ingredient juice bar is super popular for pre- or post-workout shakes.

And while the customers may be hot (in any sense of the word) here, most keep to themselves and you won’t find this demographic at all 10 city locations. The younger set flocks to the newer 21st St., 23rd St., and Cooper Square locations, while HRC is trying to update its dilapidated spots. In the meantime, try a one- to three-day pass and see how they measure up to your Crunch and Equinox expectations. If they don't, be nice when you cancel. Salespeople can be pretty a rough bunch.

SCAM MEMBERSHIP POLICY. My plan was to sign up for one month membership for the summer.

I used their facility for a month and I had to move out of the city.

The policy was that i just had to send in a cancellation form which I was fine with.

I sent in my cancellation form before i left the city but was charged AGAIN the next month.

When I contacted them for refund, they told me they never received my cancellation form and told me it's their membership policy not to refund. I had told them to begin with that i only want just ONE MONTH membership, but they signed me up for recurring membership anyway. If you're thinking about joining here, I warn you!

they were very rude and careless of taking care of the situation.

Now I have just been ripped off over $100 for their scam membership policy.

If you want to save money, better service, and not feel like you're getting ripped off every time you step in the gym, there are PLENTY of other better gyms around.

Or maybe just avoid this location on Cooper Square.

good luck!

sales pitch with a smile and that's where the service ends...... Having been injured by an over zealous trainer despite warnings of a sore back I was left in pain for 6 weeks. When I complained to the gym I was passed around the various heads of organisation until finally I was accused of fabricating the story by the head of training. When I informed the chairman Jeff Bodnar of this he promised to look into it and get back to me. He did this 3 times and now simply does not return my emails.

There are much better healthclubs in New York who despite running businesses don't just care about taking your money but see the value in customer loyalty and recommendations. Suggest you avoid the silver tongued sails pitch here before spending a penny on these crooks. good luck!

Great place to work out!. I love it here. The staff members are always friendly. The facility is very clean. Cardio equipment readily available - plenty of it - which can be rare in the city, especially after work. Locker rooms are nice, neat & complete w/ helpful attendant. Thank goodness for this gym!!
