Paranoid owner ruins experience. If I could give this place negative Stars I would. First off the food is seriosy overpriced. Second, the drinks are outragous and there is no happy hour. The atmosphere is a positive that is until the owner came in. He was so up the Bartenders butt that it was hard to order a drink. He was continuously asking if things had been rung in. Paranoid much? He wouldnt even give the bartender a chance to do his job before reaming him for absolutly nothing. Outragous behavior for a business owner in my opinion. Even though I was very forn of the two bartenders the night I was there I will NEVER go back again! The owners paranoia and lack of respect for his employees was too much of a distraction and kind of ruined mine and my girlfriends evening. No thanks, Jakes!
NEW JAKES on 9th Ave !!. Since I haven't seen an entry here for the new Jake's on 9th ave right next to Ray's Pizza...well just wanted to write a review. Beautiful bar! Marble top, 13 Tvs and whether crowded (often enough but never obnoxious) or quiet (never has that 'dead' bar feeling that makes you now want to step foot near the place) this bar is a diamond in the rough, if you live on or near 9th ave in chelsea. Stumbled upon this place not long ago and has since become my local and meeting point when hosting friends from the UES, UWS etc. When it's Spring the doors are open and you feel like you're in a SoHo cafe. This place is simply awesome. Can come here and read a book during the day and order a great lunch special or brave the crowd at night. Place has a real neighborhood, old New York bar feeling where you come for one and spend the next two hours talking to whomever walks into the bar! Great local crowd. The really cute Irish bartender Lorraine is incredible and makes you want to stick around longer than you'd like :) ! Also it's near Chelsea Piers, which may explain the sports teams that stop in from time to time to imbibe. Appetizers , btw, are diverse and delicious. Great spot!!!!!!!!!
Nice spot to unwind. Very chill place right in the heart of midtown. Has that old polished wood New York tavern atmosphere, but without seeming stuffy. Plenty of seating. Decent pub food, a great selection of beers (Jake's Tricky Ale is the best), and very cool bartenders. Great place to go to get your pre-show on.
Perfect after-work spot. This is my regular after-work bar. Great atmosphere, unpretentious, right next to the subway and very close to MSG, Chelsea Cinemas, Gotham CC, etc. Staff is top-notch and never lets an empty glass sit too long. No ear-splitting ?music? either, so you can actually have a conversation! Three big screens at the bar with every channel on the planet available, and they will switch it to whatever you request. Saw a guy last week from Washington ask if they could find the Gonzaga game on the Seattle FOX affiliate and the bartender did it without hesitation.
perfect before-and-after gotham comedy club spot!!!!!!.
my friends and i had planned a girls night out at the gotham comedy club, and when we called to confirm our reservation, we asked them if they could recommend a local bar where we could "have a few" before the show. they said that jake's saloon, right next door, was THE ideal spot. they were right! went there before the show and ended up going there after as well! the bartenders were very quick and courteous, the internet jukebox lights the place up after 10pm and app specials are served late into the night! (after our night, we HAD to indulge! well worth it! ) while we had plans to go to marquee afterwards we ended up staying here! this place had a GREAT crowd going well into (unfortunately for us, we wanted to make it a semi-early night ! :) 4am before the lights came up.
recommend this place highly!! it's awesome! beautiful bar and great vibe for this neighborhood, where there aren't many alternatives on the block like there are in the villages. turns up they also have a new place on 9th ave right near all the clubs... bartenders told us that That location was even nicer then the one we were at!!! great place!!!!!! definitely going to do the gotham/jakes combo again soon!!!
Lunch Specials like THIS for $10? Never packing lunch again!.
What to say... I work in Chelsea and eating takeout every day, while great in this or any other neighborhood in New York, can really add up. I would like to think I've become an expert at better places to eat. Until I discovered Jake's Saloon.
Although not much of a bar guy, I was drawn to the menu posted in their storefront. Specials - not including happy hour drink prices - looked incredibly delicious. Cajun Chicken entrees, Po'Boy sandwiches, Pasta Dishes, etc... this place seemed to have everything. Had to stop in!
Turns out they updated the lunch menu to 12 specials. Shepards Pie, $4 home brewed Ale specials, buffalo chicken wraps... excuse the food talk, but I want a decent lunch!
Went in and ordered the aforementioned Shepard's Pie. It was delicious. I would have ate it the next day if I didn't fall in love with the chicken wrap the next day instead. Pasta Bolognese at an Irish style tavern? Given the guy sitting next to me enjoying it more than vocally, I think I might order that tomorrow!
In short, I LOVE this place. Instead of ordering drap chinese from the place down the street, I can come here, relax, watch CNN and MSNBC and eat some incredible grub. Brendan, the Irish bartender, is also so great to talk to. Smart as a whip, quick with a joke and obviously has a great repoire with his customers. He says this is a great happy hour place. Think I might have to come here after work and take him up on his word!
Incredible Sports and Neighborhood Bar - My New Local!!.
Last minute superbowl plans in NYC are not fun! Luckily, living in Chelsea I had the pleasure of haphazardly choosing Jake?s Saloon on the corner of 23rd and 7th. What an incredible choice.
If you?ve never been, this bar is set up perfectly to watch sports. The bar only has 8 huge flatscreen HD TVs ( I know... only 8!) but they are so strategically placed throughout the bar that there literally is not a bad seat in the house. I promptly sat at the bar and ordered a drink and they already had the volume and all TVs set up for the game. Told the bartender that I was expecting friends soon and though the barstools were all full, he assured me that he could transfer my tab over to one of the few open tables and acomodate us all.Ordered the crab cakes and chicken mango spring rolls at the bar and although they seemed a little pricey, the bartender Jim assured me that Jake?s serves well-above-average bar fare. He was right, absolutely delicious.
After having a table set aside for my friends, we set up shop amid a colorful collection of dedicated locals, tourists in the area including the historic Chelsea Hotel, and rabid football fans.
Overall, the experience was incredible!!! The wait staff picked up right where the bartender left off, we had an amazing time watching the game and even got a chance to chat with some of the locals who obviously love the place afterwards. Having moved to the neighborhood not long ago, I felt like I finally found my ?local.? To prove it, the bartender mentioned that although he wasn?t working the night after, "George" (Mon night guy) would take care of them the next night. And he certainly did! Kudos to him and Matt the server for treating us so well!
Overall in the two days I went there in a row everyone treated me like I was one of their beloved regulars who are always there. Having just moved to the neighborhood, they told me they hoped they?d see me around in the near future. As for this reviewer? They can count on it.
Don't start a tab. Good TVs for NFL Sunday, but DON'T start a tab with them. They will give 'buy backs' to their favored customers and put it on your tab. When questioned about tab errors they will not admit their mistakes. Buyer beware.
Jake's opened a new branch on 9th Avenue between 22nd and 23rd. I got there early to watch the opening day of NFL games. The food I ordered was great, bartender was friendly, lots of flatscreens all around. But when gametime started, they couldn't figure out how to pick up the satellite feeds of out-of-town games. I'd been there for an hour, and no one tested the system. I missed the 1st quarter and I had to pay the bill, and go look for another place to watch.
Oh yeah, and at the other location, the manager/owner was after my girlfriend too. He waited until I went to the bathroom and then started chatting her up.
Sports bar or mexican resturant?. I used to frequent this place because it was your quitiessential sports bar. They had a few hotties, lots of TV's and decent prices. However, I am forced to bring my boys else where. The prices went way up and there isnt a cute girl to be found. I dont mind paying top dollar for a pint but I dont want some Mexican dude who doesnt speak english serving it to me. Wheres the hot girl bartender they used to have? Its a real sausage fest. And while it is chelsea, it didnt used to be a sausage party the way it is now. Plus, my Buddy came in here on a saturday night and said some sleezy guy who says he's the owner was hitting on his girlfriend and buying her steaks and all. So he wont come back. Its a shame. whatcha gonna do?
