“Also, maintenance requests are not answered, phone calls are hardly ever returned and their "receptionists" are incredibly rude.”
“Overall we live in a nice building but we have a huge issue with the responsiveness to maintenance and emergency repair service requests.”
Worst Management Company in Manhattan.
This is my first review on Yelp. In fact, I signed up for Yelp just to post this review. Dermot is the worst management company in Manhattan. I've lived here for over five years with 3 different management companies. It truly is slumlord management. A few notes:
1) Don't bother trying to contact Dermot via phone. They will NEVER pick up. Instead, you will probably have to go down to their office in person where the receptionist will tell you to call to make an appointment. That is when you start shouting until someone in a position of authority hears you. This is probably the only effective way to speak to Dermot. That being said, most of us work during business hours and can't just go to Dermot, so your issue will probably never be resolved.
2) The buildings managed by Dermot are completely unsanitary. I have lived here for about 1 1/2 years and this is what we have experienced in our apartment:
a) Roaches in the apartment (large and baby sized)
b) Mold growing in the bathroom
c) Mice (they are a new addition - just arrived, more than one)
d) Bedbugs in the building
e) Rats that scurry into the common garbage bin areas and the basement (you see the lurking around the sidewalk and night and pray that you can make it up your steps before they attack you)
f) Ceilings falling in (yes, this is exactly what it sounds like)
g) the alleys really are deplorable. as i write this, 2 men are cleaning the alleys behind and between our buildings. they are both shouting about how this is the dirtiest cleaning job they have ever worked on.
3) Dermot charged late fees on our rent even though it was mailed on time. Tried to resolve the issue by sending them multiple notices. Six months later and the late fee still appears on our monthly rent statement. We spoke with some of our neighbors and they had the same exact issue. Perhaps Dermot was low on money and decided to charge all building residents a late fee this one particular month? I wouldn't put it past them.
In case you're wondering, I am a very clean person. My roommates and I should not be the targets of the gross things seen in our apartment. We clean regularly.
Bottom line: Spend that extra $100-$200 on rent and live in a building owned by, well any other management company in Manhattan.
Whatever you do, DO NOT. I have read all of these reviews and agree with every single one, so there is no use re-hashing. I will say that I will tell everyone I know (they already know, let's be serious) to never rent/buy one of their properties. I rent currently and know they have units for sale. Never in a million years will I ever deal with these people again. Do yourself a favor, and don't.
Even if you are rent stabalized WATCH OUT!.
This company bought my building and although my rent is stabilized and I pay each month I get letters slipped under my door claiming I have not paid in two months and treatening lawsuits. I believe they sit on checks to make a case so I began making budget transfers so my bank automatically pushes the funds and I am not waiting for a cancelled check to prove I've paid. Still the notices keep coming...
Either they hope I am not on top of my game so they can get me evicted or their book keeper needs to be fired.
I continue to call and confirm I have paid and have even shown up in court to prove it, every few months a new letter shows up.
I recently received an offer to pay me to not renew my lease. Not enough to get me to go.
I wonder at what point will I have means to hit them with a harassment case. Saving my corespondence and bank statements just in case...
AVOID!!!!.
Here is the little secret... many of their buildings receive tax abatements folks... look it up (J-51). If you pay market rate in a Dermot building, you may be entitled to a rent stabilized lease. Now, they will rape you on the amount of the rent stabilized rent because more than likely they supposedly did some lovely gut renovation to your apartment right? Just file a complaint to the the DHCR, you can get a copy of the all the invoices and call the DHCR to get a history of the rent history of your unit. It is a pretty tedious process but worth it to look into. J-51 - look it up.
AVOID, AVOID, AVOID, AVOID... They will lure you in with their no fee.. but resist. I have been a tenant for a little over two years. Worst management company ever. Experienced what every one says... they NEVER return phone calls. My lease ends this month. Guess what. I received my lease renewal.... uhmmmm at the beginning of April saying you have until April 18th to respond whether you are renewing. So, I have a few questions... I called Estela on Monday, left a message. No call back. Called her on Tuesday... no call back. Called Bruce yesterday... no call back. Talked to the receptionist with the attitude... she said that they are very busy and they are in meetings. Guess that is why they can't call me back. Oh well.
About a month ago, I had to get an extra key to the front of the building. They use they key fobs so you can't just go make an extra key. So, I called the management company and she said she would notify the property manager who would then give it to the super. (btw - you have to pay $50 for each extra key). A week later, I didn't hear back so I called again and left another message with the same girl... she said she would even try contacting another property manager just in case. I never heard back. I just gave up.
There are a few other incidents, but I won't bore you. They are all the same. I am really debating on moving elsewhere. But I have a case open with the DHCR and the fact that my unit is rent stabilized, I am just contesting the rent amount... I think I may stick it out... I'll have to think about it. But for the rest of you... If you have the opportunity to go elsewhere... please, just avoid them!
THEY WILL STEAL YOUR MONEY.
Just got back my deposit check from them with bogus deductions. They charged me over $350 dollars for a "cleaning fee" and "damage to walls and floor"
These are bogus charges, the place was immaculate - clean enough so that I didn't think I needed to take any pictures.
Jokes on me becuase they told me it was a pigsty and stole the money. Had I known I would have left it in horrible condition.
Shame on your dermot....stealing peoples money like this....
I would steer clear of them as landlords and try to find someone else....

Hi,
I just put an application and deposit in for this building. The apartment is beautiful, but now I am so worried after seeing all these reviews. Do you think I should back out of the contract? I probably wont get back my deposit it sounds like. Anyway, any suggestions or did anyone live in that building? did the bed bug problem get resolved, because I really don't want to deal with that. My current Management company SW Management is great.
Thanks,
Amanda
Extreme Lack of Customer Service.
I will echo everyone's sentiments and agree that obtaining any sort of help from this office is near impossible. I am now on my third attempt to reach someone there after many unreturned calls, unforwarded messages and just general lack of customer service.
For such a large office (as I saw upon my lease signing two years ago) I seriously question what the staff are doing. They are fortunate to have such nice properties that speak for themselves in location, etc., because the Dermot Management sure does not. I am currently pending an application to the Better Business Bureau to remedy all of my issues.
Incapable staff, RUDE, Unresponsive- WORST REALTY CO IN NYC!.
This is the absolute WORST management company I have ever dealt with. No one ever answers the phone, they waste your time trying to chase some one down to answer a simple question. Never send anything needed on time, taking me FOREVER to get my deposit returned... overall just horrible. I live in a new building now managed by a company that has even more tenants to deal with that Dermot and they do it seamlessly, the absolute opposite of this company.
Every time something needs to get done, they blame it not being done on other people being fired, F MINUS.. DON'T LIVE AT ANY OF THEIR PROPERTIES!!!
TERRIBLE managment/landlord.
I live in 122 st and Amsterdam very close Columbia University. the company manages the whole block from 122 to 123, and from Amsterdan to Broadway. They tried to make the look of the building very nice, but once you move in. They did a terrible job on maintaining the building; fixing problem in your apartment. No one response to the call, no one return your email and message. Now we have bedbugs problem, because the company didn't try to fix the bedbugs problem upstairs for 3 months last September.
Stay AWAY from them!!!!!!!!!
