Editorial Review for Tasty Dumpling – by Keith Wagstaff

In Short
There is cheap, and then there is Chinatown cheap. Locals and tourists alike pack this tiny storefront for one of the city's best deals: Five fried dumplings (either pork and chives or pork and cabbage) for only $1.25, each one with a slightly crispy outside and oh-so juicy and tangy inside. Similarly cheap dishes like hot and sour soup, boiled dumplings and spicy cucumber are also available. Space is minimal, so many customers take their meals across the street to a park often filled with Chinese families.

Hits: Most dollar foods conjure up images of cardboard fast food burgers, but these savory dumplings are worth every penny and more.

Misses: The decor is dingy, the service brisk and the quarters cramped, but the lure of cheap, delicious food lures crowds nonetheless.

Note: this place is better than ALLEN ST. FRIED DUMPLINGS. why ? First off the seating arrangements to eat are just about the same if not slightly bigger than allen st. dumplings. The dumplings are fried to a crisp seared bottom with a bite into the juiciest fried dumpling meat filling you have ever had. It almost a fried soup dumpling with about a small about of juicy flavor that comes with every fried dumpling. Again its 5 dumplings just for $1 ! not only that but they even have a bigger selection than allen st. dumpling such as beef noodle soup. Although i've never had their soups i've always only had their number #1, fried dumpling with chives. I usually get 3 -4 dollars worth and that just about 15 - 20 dumplings. You sure will get filled up with these babies.

Pros: GREATEST FRIED DUMPLINGS EVER. FAST !!!!!

Cons: no bathroom =/

I used to be a big fan of the "dollar dumpling" place around the corner on Mosco Street, but stopped at this place a few years ago on a whim. I have not gone back to Mosco Street or any other "dumpling place" since. Tasty Dumpling offers a great variety of dumplings prepared either boiled or fried, whereas most dumpling places only offer the fried variety. They also have a selection of soups, tasty pancakes, buns, and noodles. I highly recommend getting an order of the spicy preserved Chinese cabbage ($1.00) to go with your dumplings. Orders of dumplings are between $1.00 and $2.00 depending on the filling. I used to work in the area, but have since changed offices. However, I make it a point to go there for a quick snack anytime I find myself in Chinatown shopping or getting a haircut. My usual is an order of fried pork and chive dumplings and an order of the spicy cabbage - $2.00!!!! You can't beat that!!! $5.00 fed three of us, and $10.00 made 4 of us roll out of there feeling like pigs! Of course they sell cans of soda, but I usually have a bottle of water with me anyway. They also sell frozen dumplings to take home. The pork and chive come 50 pc/bag for, I believe, $7.00. I haven't tried bringing them home yet. It's a very tiny place, but has some tables to share. When the weather is nice, take your order to go and sit in the park across the street. Lunchtime is madness. If you order the boiled dumplings, you will have to wait a few minutes longer. They prepare the dumplings per order and they come out piping hot. Be careful!!

Pros: Cheap tasty snack

Cons: Tiny space can easily get crowded. No bathroom.
